Okay, so I have so many emotions connected with musical episode! It’s probably the biggest event since Charlotte’s rape on Private Practice. Watching this episode was like, oooo THIS momennt, this moment, this moment, all the time! Firstly, can I just say how suprised I am in general by actors vocal abilities! Of course I am impressed by voices of Sara Ramirez, Chyler Leigh and Chandra Wilson, but I heard them singing before so It wasn’t suprising. Besides these three amazing ladies I loved voices of McKidd, I was so shocked when I heard him sing probably the most! Jessica Capshaw, that duet with Sara, oh my perfect! Eric Dane, wow, he can start a rock band already! and Justin Chambers, very nice as well and I wish we could hear more from Kim Raver.
As I always need to categorise everything I put the songs in order of likes.
1. The Story
Sara Ramirez’s voice, from all the songs in this episode that was mastership!
I climbed across the mountaintops
Swim across the ocean blue
I cross over lines and I broke all the rules
And baby I broke them all for you
Oh because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do, I was made for you
You see the smile that’s on my mouth
It’s hiding the words that don’t come out
All of the friends who think that I’m blessed
They don’t know my head is a mess
No they don’t know who I really am
And they don’t know what I’ve been through
Like you do, and I was made for you
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I’ve been
And how I got to where I am
Oh but these stories don’t mean anything
When you’ve got no one to tell them to
It’s true, I was made for you
Oh yeah, and it’s true that I was made for you
When I heard it for the first time I started crying at swim across ocean blue, so at the end when she sings these stories don’t mean anything when you’ve got no one to tell them to you just hear these words and you just burst into tears.
2. Chasing cars
I would feel crazy If a ginger started singing to me when I’m in ER. When Sara and McKidd start singing together oh my! And them all in three with Chandra!
We’ll do it all
Everything
On our own
We don’t need
Anything
Or anyone
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lay with me and just forget the world?
I don’t quite know
How to say
How I feel
Those three words
Are said too much
They’re not enough
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lay with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life
All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see
I don’t know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all
3. Breathe
I have a particular relationship with this song, as I sang it in a local singing competition few years back, still remember all the words 🙂 It’s just so beautiful, I’m glad Chyler Leigh got to sing it cause she did a great job!
2 AM and she calls me cause I’m still awake
Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?
I don’t love him, winter just wasn’t my season.
Yeah we walk through the doors so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize
Hypocrites, you’re all here for the very same reason.
May he turned 21 on the base of Fort Bliss
“Just a day,” he said down to the flask in his fist
Ain’t been sober since maybe October of last year
Here in town you can tell he’s been down for while
But my God it’s so beautiful when the boy smiles
Wanna hold him maybe I’ll just sing about it
There’s a light at each end of this tunnel
You shout cause you’re just as far in as you’ll ever be out
And these mistakes you’ve made
You’ll just make them again if you’ll only try turnin’ around
2 AM and I’m still awake writing this song
If i get it all down on paper it’s no longer inside of me
Threatening the life it belongs to.
And I feel like I’m naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary screamin’ out aloud
And I know that you’ll use them however you want to.
But you can’t jump the track
We’re like cars on a cable
And life’s like an hourglass glued to the table,
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand…yeah breathe
Just breathe, oh oh breathe, just breathe, oh breathe,
just breathe, oh breathe, just breathe…
4. Universe and U
This amazing scene, particular scene when Arizona and Callie sing together, the way Callie’s looking at her, oh my!
A fire burns
Water comes
You cool me down
When I’m cold inside
You are warm and bright
You know you are so good for me
With your child eyes
You are more than you seem
You see into space
I see in your face
The places you’ve been
The things you have learned
They sit with you so beautifully
You know there’s no need to hide away
You know I tell the truth
We are just the same
I can feel everything you do
Hear everything you say
Even when you’re miles away
Cause I am me, the universe and you
Just like stars burning bright
Making holes in the night
We are building bridges
You know there’s no need to hide away
You know I tell the truth
We are just the same
I can feel everything you do
Hear everything you say
Even when you’re miles away
Cause I am me, the universe and you
The universe and you, the universe and you.
When you’re on your own
I’ll send you a sign
Just so you know
I am me, the universe and you.
I am the universe and you,
I am the unvierse and you.
5. Grace
It’s hard to listen to this song without thinking of scene from season 2 right? I know I can’t. But from this episode the most amazing part was the scene when all the attending are running in slow motion with Callie sitting on bed. And look at Addison, perfect!
I’m on my knees Only memories I left for me to hold. Don’t know how, but I’ll get by Slowly pull myself together. I’ll get through this There’s no escape So keep me safe This feels so unreal. Nothing comes easily Fill this empty space Nothing is like it seems Turn my grief to grace. I feel the cold Loneliness unfold like From another world Come what may I won’t fade away, but I know I might change Nothing comes easily where do I begin Nothing can bring me peace I’ve lost everything. I just want to feel your embrace
6. How to save a life
Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it’s just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you’ve told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you’ve followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he’ll say he’s just not the same
And you’ll begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
7. Running on Sunshine
The part when girls start singing! Oh my and Teddy and Henry! And how Kim Raver dances around his bed! Oh my! The way Chyler Leigh sings!
Girl you got me tripping on sunshine
God knows you just made my day
Since you came around, I just can’t slow down, no
I wanna see you walk in my way, yeah
Hey just get over yourself
This ain’t too good for your health
Hey just get over yourself
You got me runnin’ on sunshine
And ain’t no clouds getting in my way, no
I must be running on sunshine
And ain’t no rain getting in my way
These 7 were my favorite, the other two were great sung but I think writers could have picked different songs.
8. Wait
sung by Chandra Wilson
Wait, wait for the dawn my dear
Wait till the sun gets here
And you will wait too long he will be gone
Wait, wait till the sun shines through
Wait till the sky is blue
And you will wait too long he will be gone, he will be gone
Ooh, he will be gone
Ooh, he will be gone
Wait, wait till the signs are right
Wait till the perfect time
And you will wait too long he will be gone, he will be gone
9. How we operate
sung by McKidd, can I just say how much he ROCKED this song? Amazing!
Calm down
And get straight
It’s in our eyes
It’s how we operate
You’re true
You are
I’d apologize but it won’t go very far
Please come here
Come right on over
And when we collide we’ll see what gets left over
A little joy
A little sorrow
And a little pride so we won’t have to borrow
Wherever you lead, I’ll follow
Turn me inside out and upside down
And try to see things my way
Turn a new page, tear the old one out
And I’ll try to see things your way
Please come here
Please come on over
There is no line that you can’t step right over
Without you well I’m left hollow
So can we decide to try a little joy tomorrow
‘Cos baby tonight I’ll follow
The way that we’ve been speaking now
I swear that we’d be friends, I swear
‘Cos all these little deals go down with
Little consequences, we share, we share
Turn me inside out and upside down
And try to see things my way
Turn a new page, tear the old one out
And I’ll try to see things your way
And I’m gonna love you anyway
Try to see things your way
Try to see things your way
Favorite scene of the episode?
When Arizona says: Can you just…can you live? Can you live, for me? Please, Live for me.
and when they sing together, and Callie is looking at her with all the love. Yes, Calzona is the best tv couple ever!
Did you get from which episodes were all the songs? i remembered 6 particular scenes to 6 songs when I watched the episode and I needed to check 3. Summing up, it was one of the best Grey’s Anatomy episode. My work for now is to paint 4 scenes I picked: Arizona crying, when Callie is crushing, Lexie, when she walks on the hallway, is pushed by people, because it was like a real musical scene, and Callie on seating on that bed with all the doctors running, and the scene of Calzona singing, this is going to be the perfect Saturday.
