911, 911 Lone Star, everybody loves raymond, greys, greys anatomy, law and order: svu, modern family, one day at a time, ozark, reviews, schooled, svu, the goldbergs, tv, tv show reviews, tv shows

Modern Family has ended, more on the finale, below. I’ve got 4 days left until my holiday, which I’ll spend in my living room staring at the TV. I’ve had the watchlist ready for weeks. Yesterday I’ve started watching 911: Lone Star and my parents and I are hooked on it. It’s not as good as 911, but It’s interesting enough. I’m not a fan of Rob Lowe’s, but we did love Brothers and Sisters, and I did watch The Leftovers. Both 911 and 911 Texas have been renewed for new seasons. My dad and I watched the new season of Ozark two weeks ago, and honestly, I liked the 3rd season so much, it’s all I can think about. That and the Blackfish documentary I watched on Netflix 4 days ago. Ozark returned after over a year and a half, and I really hope there’s a 4th season. I’ll post much more often once my holiday starts, even though I do feel I’ve been consistent this year. I’m writing this post while watching Madhouse starring Vincent Price. I just love all these dark, gothic, Poesque horrors with Price. Once lockdown finished TV studios including Netflix will need to re-think their scheduling and prioritise TV shows. Dead to Me is back in 3 weeks, but Younger normally returns in June and The Handmaid’s Tale soon after. The Society hasn’t filmed much, but should be back in May too, and 13 Reasons Why is a summer show too. Not sure how much has been shot though, but all shows, including the Fall season ones could come back even 6 months late. Let’s say the lockdown is lifted in July, won’t actors complain that they haven’t had a proper holiday, even though they would have been off for 3 months at that point? We’ll see.

Greys 16.19

We learn that Teddy is bisexual and the girl she was seeing and was in love with, died in one of the Twin Towers. We learn that Teddy named her daughter after her. I don’t know why they spend so much time on Maggie, we don’t want to know anything more about her. I’m just happy Richard is not leaving, after Karev’s disappointing exit, I’m not ready to get to know anyone new.

Do you miss her?
Every day of every week of every year of my life.
You were the last person she was trying to call.
Yes, Alison loved me, but she also loved you.

SVU 21.17

Ballerinas are recorded having sex with male ballet dancers, and then they’re forced to sleeping with producers and choreographers. I really liked the Norma Rae reference coming from a millenial. It’s like the Riverdale references to 40s films no 17 year old would know of, like Gaslight. I guess I should just be happy I know them.

He would watch the videos like the girls were auditioning for him.
He pressured you, he extorted you, that’s rape.
Rape culture is such a big part of this company, they don’t see it anymore.
This isn’t just balet, churches, news organisations, movie sets, when your boss is a predator, people are afraid.
You want me to be the Norma Rae of the National Ballet?
You want this life, you pay the price.

Mitchell, that was your last eye roll in this house.
These are the kids’ grandparents.
Mitch is struggling to say goodbye to the house.
That’s elder abuse!
You messed with the wrong Gamma.

2.5/10

Modern Family 11.17/18

I usually cry uncontrolably during series finales, and yet I didn’t get emotional once. All kids have moved out with Alex moving to Switzerland, Luke to Oregon for college and Mitch, Cam, Lily and the baby move to Missouri.

Schooled 2.18

Rick convinces Lanie to find her mother, who walked out on her and her dad 15 years prior, back when Lanie was a teenager.

You’re sure you’re right handed?
My shower is gonna look like the scene from Psycho, but Smurf.
Did I just think of a perfect movie pitch?
Wow, 15 years.
Oh my god, I’m dating Barry Goldberg.
Now I’m a music teacher at William Penn.
Rick Mellar, friend and co-worker.
5 years sober.

In that direction, pass the trees.
We’re not Hansel and Gretel.
You watch a lot of Lifetime movies, don’t you?
He slipped through the chimney like a turtleneck Santa.

The Goldbergs 7.19

Barry and Erika go on a Spring Break and Adam learns he doesn’t have the grades to get into NYU and we learn that the real Adam Goldberg got into NYU for submitting a great play he wrote.

I just wanna make movies.
You were talking about film school since you were in kindergarten.
We’re gonna wow NYU so hard they’re gonna have to accept you.
Adam, this play is incredible.

One Day at a Time 4.01

Ray Romano guest stars, they should have done everything in their power to keep him. After getting cancelled by Netflix last year and being picked up by Pop, the writers throw a diss at Netflix in the very first minute of the season. The Everybody Loves Raymond reference made my day.

It’s like there’s nothing good on Netflix anymore.
At this point, I would rather be murdered.
And now we know all the different ways in which I’m single.
There’s no box for happy.
I’m all 3, do I win something?
So this must be your husband?
God no.
Oh yes, they taught us this, it’s nice to meet…You?
I’m gay.
Right now I don’t wanna be me.
And Papito is single.
Right, because he’s a child.
Put down that my grandmother and I are just friends.
Privleged but woke.
They will all be saying ‘Everybody Loves Brian’.
Yeah, doesn’t sound right.
A Lifetime movie. I just love watching rich people in trouble.
She didn’t give an F.
Step one, start liking women.
Step two, turn to your right.
Discuss.
All that stupid small talk. Where’d you go to high school, how many siblings do you have.

One Day at a Time 4.02

I didn’t like this episode one bit.

I speak Spanish.
I’m young.

That’s better. Penelope and abuelita argue over female masturbation, after Penelope’s son walks in on her and her toy.

Punchline

I just love this film so much! It’s my 8th or 10th watch and it never gets old! Sally and Tom are fantastic as stand-up comedians. Sally plays a housewife married to a Polish man and is a beginner comedian. She spends 500 dollars on poor jokes, and enlists Tom Hanks’s help to reinvent her act. Tom falls for her, even though she’s happily married and has no feelings for him. Sally’s husband doesn’t think she’s funny anymore and doesn’t like her evening trips to the comedy club. There’s a stand-up contest both Sally and Tom take part in. Sally’s husband sees her perform for the first time, and not only finds her funny, but is proud of her. Sally wins, but gives her prize and title up as she realises she doesn’t need it, because she already has everything she needs, and because she thinks Tom is funnier and should have won. Tom does win, and Sally leaves with her husband, discussing all the jokes she’s going to tell at next stand-up night.

Blackfish

I’ve been a vegan for 10 years and vegetarian for more than I can remember, so it’s true that I’m not a fan of most zoos and some of their practices. I do however have friends who’ve worked at zoos and they’ve explained to me on numerous occasions the importance zoos have in animal conservation. I like zoos that rescue animals, and only keep the ones that cannot be released back into the wild. I accept zoos that have fancy, big animal enclosures, but most don’t. Dolphin and whale shows along with artificial animal insemination are things I’ll never understand and want no part in, so even though I may visit my friends at a zoo, and feed and hug a koala or two, I’ll never set foot in Sea World. Apparently author John Green decided to scrap a scene from Paper Towns’s film adaptation after seeing this film, wheras Colin Trevorov, director of Jurassic World, based raptors’ responses on Tilikum’s behaviour in captivity. I only watched Blackfish 3 days ago, but it was all I could think about, so I watched it again.

8.5/10

The Man in the Moon

I forgot how beautiful this film was! Little Reese steals every scene she’s in! It’s a wonderful coming of age story of 14 year old Dani and her first crush. The crush likes her, but doesn’t want to be with her because of her young age. Her older sister falls for the same guy, who just happens to be 17, just like her. A tragedy strikes, changing their lives forever.

8/10

Wedding March 4

Watching Hallmark films with my family means one thing, it’s Easter time! After the 3rd one, I could feel my brain melt, thankfully this was my second one and I managed to watch this before that happened. I haven’t seen the other 4 films from this series but I’m familiar with Jack Wagner and Josie Bissett from When Calls the Heart and Melrose Place. This was okay, and I think I will eventually watch the other 4 of them. I couldn’t concentrate on the film after they mentioned pistachio cake. I know what I’ll be getting myself for birthday this year.

6/10

Easter Under Wraps

Hallmark has 20+ Spring rom-coms, but only one Easter film? I’ve only watched this because it was on HBO Go and I was looking for rom-coms to watch with my family over the Easter break. The film centered around a chocolate factory and, according to my mom, starred ‘Kevin’ from Chesapeake Shores.

Jackie

This is the 550th new film I watched this year, and I’m really happy it’s this one. Natalie Portman gave a great performance in this aftermath after John Kennedy’s shooting. She sounded very much like Jackie. Emma Stone really snatched that Oscar from her. The shooting scene was very life-like and may be not be for those with a weak stomach.

4/10

Maniac

Speaking of Emma Stone, here’s a Netflix original series she starred it. It also stars Jonah Hill and the girl from Ozark. I watched it for Sally Field. Sad to report I hated every single one of those alternative universes. And all this nonsense for such a ‘normal’ conclusion? Someone once told me I sound just like Jonah Hill, but I don’t see it? My accent does sound American, thanks to 20 years of watching American films and TV Shows, but I don’t think I sound like him. Congrats to Jonah on his massive weight loss. I know how hard it is to change your lifestyle and never look back. I am currently too scared of loose skin to actually lose the weight.

4/10

The Butterfly Effect

I could watch 2 hours of the first 25 minutes of this film, actually I could watch a whole mini series with these kids from Ashton Kutcher’s charater’s flashbacks.

8/10

hall fantbea family divided

Halloween

It was bloody amazing! We’ve waited so long to see Jamie Lee do another Halloween, and she’s back at it again, 40 years since the first one and 16 years since Resurrection. The most important thing? They completely ignored events from Halloween 20 yrs Later and the ridiculous Resurrection that dared to kill Jamie Lee’s character off. My favorite part of this sequel must be Laurie closing the roller shutters after checking every single room. See you in 10 years?

9/10

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald

These films are ruining the Harry Potter franchise. At least we got to see Hogwarts. How old was Dumbledore supposed to be in Harry Potter? In 1927, he’s in his 40s. If that wasn’t enough, Professor McGonagall is here too, and she’s in her 30s. Rating would be lower had I not seen it in 3D. Johnny Depp’s acting has gone down hill since the 90s, it’s a shame. He is never getting that Oscar now.

6/10

A Family Divided

I really miss those 90s TV movies about rape that saw a mother or a survivor fight for justice against everyone trying to silence them. Knowing Stephen Collins has been a pedophile his entire adult life ruined my experience with this film. I probably would have liked this film more, had I watched it before 2014. I definitely would not have been so sceptical and angry at the 7th Heaven star. Here he’s covering up his son’s crime. Actually all three men in that family are vile people. As always, Faye Dunaway gives a great perforance and you just route for her the entire film.

5/10

Christiane F

Just thought of this film out of nowhere for the first time in almost 15 years. Both the book ‘Kids from the Zoo station’ and film were a major hit among kids my age, bigger than Requiem for a Dream. Everyone seemed to be fascinated with it and there was a high demand for the book both in the school and local libraries. It’s a great film too.

8/10

Strangled

This reminded me of that time when the bank sent me on a First Aid course and someone mentioned narcolepsy and this other bloke in his late 60s said ‘that’s when you do it with dead people’ and everyone laughed.

Anyway, this was a pretty good thriller based on a true story.

6/10

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Very average and Keira Knightley’s squicky voice was so annoying.

4/10

Adventures in Public School

Netflix’s worst original right here. Really bad, until the last 10 seconds. The last 10 seconds were sweet. Highly unlikely, but sweet.

3/10

Wreck-It Ralph

When Shut Up and Drive started playing halfway through the film. Also, I recongised Jack McBrayer’s voice straight away, even though I’ve only seen him on The Middle.

6/10

Ralph Breaks the Internet

I thought it was quite good, until Ralph broke the Internet and the film got so boring I fell asleep. Good old Odeon handed out these magnet Instagram photo frames for fridge.

Lady Bird

Lady Bird is especially relatable for anyone who went away to uni, leaving their family and hometown behind. In the end, realizing that their town and how they were brought up was in fact, enough.

9/10

Blockers

Hilarious! Loved the friendship between the three parents!

7.5/10

Finding your feet

‘Where are you going?’
‘To see the world, it’s bigger than this.’

I hope Finding Your Feet gets an international cinema release, so you can all enjoy it as much as I did.

7/10

Suburbicon

I have never fallen asleep at the movies…until today. Kept dozing off a few times, which just proves how boring Suburbicon is. Yes Julie Moore was great, and the little kid was alright too, but you should wait a year for it to air on HBO or be added on Netflix.

7/10

Hello, my name is Doris

Really into the Sally Field and Tyne Daly friendship. And the scene where Natasha Lyonne’s character talks about teenage selfharm. Sally Field’s performance, incredible as always.

8/10

Fences

This worked so much better as a play. They never even left the house! No one deserves to listen to Denzel Washington whine about same things over and over again. If you’ve seen ANY of Viola’s earlier performaces, you know what she can DO! She has an amazing acting range! I don’t know why everyone is so impressed with her in this, when she was equally good everywhere else. I didn’t think she showed anything else in Fences, it was her usual best.

7/10

bridget wrinkle sin of innocence

Bridget Jones’s Baby

Never explained why or when Bridget and Mark broke off their engagement.

7.5/10

A Wrinkle in Time

I do still occasionally enjoy new films for teens and children, but I am just too old for this one.

2.5/10

Sin of Innocence

Only took me an hour and a half to realize the girl is Anne from Green Gobles! The film was missing the incestious vibe you’d expect and Dermont’s random reactions got unrealistic and simply annoying as he wept cause his daddy wouldn’t let him shag his new sister.

4/10

it tothebone gifted

Stephen King’s IT

3 hours well spent. This was one of many horrors that formed me into a horror obsessed kid that I’ve always been. It may not be scary like Chucky was, unless you’re afraid of clowns, but it was creepy and weird and that’s what I’m into. I loved IT so much, I decided to submitt my painting of the Clown as one of my works when tranfering to Advanced Art in my first year of high school. If you didn’t want to be a member of the lucky seven squad, you’re lying to yourself. I was the fat kid.

8/10

To The Bone

The only disturbing scene was the random baby bottle one. It makes a joke of eating disorders, how are you suppose to show this film to someone who is skeptical of eating disorders when they burst out loud laughing because of the bottle scene. The film is nowhere near as good as Sharing the Secret or When Friendship Kills, but I’m glad that every couple of years we get a new ED film. The fourteen and fifteen-year-old version of myself would be all over this one.

7/10

Little Man Tate, but average.

4/10

Once Upon a Time in America

The middle part of the film was completely flawed. The sweet and sour childhood flashbacks, the second assault and the third act were what held this film together.

6/10

The Big Wedding

I watched it at the cinema and the best part of the film was the Michael Buble song that played at the end.

4/10

Red Sparrow

Best part of the film was when a young couple one row before me, clearly on their first date, left the minute Jennifer got to the academy. Boy, it would have been extremely awkward for them if they stayed a minute longer. That’s the problem with this film, people see Jennifer partner up with her Hunger Games director and all the freshly turned 18 year olds blindly go to the cinema without even watching the trailer. Are they in for a shock. The cinema chain I watched this at gave out a free audiobook on audible worth 22.99 quid. Since I checked time on my phone three times while watching the film, there is no way I will be spending another minute with this story. No film this boring should ever last full 2 hours.

2/10

Kill For Me

It’s hard to make it till the end, but there’s a surprise there waiting for you.

5/10

I Feel Pretty

I really believed the critics who said this was offensive to overweight people, and hesitated whether I should support this film and check it out, but it was alright. Also, how cute was Michelle Williams in this!

5.5/10

I expected it to be better, but the mother annoyed me too much.

The finale week. I started rewatching Greys season 11, as my dad suggested a rewatch. We’re reminiscing and I’m saying it will always be my fvorite show every time I click on the next episode. I’ll never be over how good it is. And how badly I care about Meredith and other babies. There’s nothing better than spending a decade watching a show, and going through different phases in your life while they go through different phases.

Greys 11.25

The finale week is here and I can’t stand another 4 month break from Greys. We love how Ben worships Miranda. I liked when Meredith told Webber and Catherine to stop whining, as she would love to hve one more minute with her husband. Meredith introduces her new sisters to dance party tradition she had with Cristina. She also tells Maggie to come to her with everything, as because of everything she went through, she is qualified to help her. My mom, who is also a big fan of the show, my whole family is thanks to me, said the season would end with Webber/Catherine wedding and it did. April and Avery ended, as Jackson gave his wife an ultimatum. Derek’s ferryboat tape concludes this somehow uplifting finale, as we say our final goodbyes to the characters we loved for over a decade.

People said I came from a broken family. Even though getting divorced is the least broken thing they ever did.
You will be Greys Sloane next chief of surgery.
You’ve mistaken an intern for an attending?
He was basically running the ER.
Id she moving out? Is there room for Amelia? You could take your old room, I could take my room, and Amelia could take Cristina’s.
No she’s selling the house with the children.
Sad widow is my friend. My best friend.
It’s my old phone. There is a voicemail on it. Password is 1515. And make sure you’re alone when you listen to it.
What’d the matter with you two?!
My husband died.
Today is the first day of your new job, and you have failed gloriously.
You have to teach them how to paddle their stupid feet.
You need a place to fall apart, I’ll be that place.
Jo, it’s a crime scene.
Sell Meredith her home back.
There’s no darkness in my life.
You should always come to me, cause I’m qualified to help you.
Come on, dance party.
No matter how dark it gets, the sun will rise again.

10/10

Revenge 4.23

Emily VanCamp explained on twitter that the dream sequence in which she got Victoria’s heart was just a nightmare, because I wanted it to be true. Getting your nemesis’ heart is the final ‘fuck you’ from the world. I wanted to write Victoria, but she wouldn’t have liked that either. The show ends with Victoria and David dying, Emily and Charlotte reconciling, Emily and Jack’s wedding and Nolan getting the last present from Ems. As the one happy thing about Revenge finale is that Nolan will continue avenging people.

RIP, Victoria Grayson. I will miss you dearly.

Goodbye, Revenge. You were good.

This has all started with Amanda Clarke changing her identity and ending with me changing mine.
Corpse I pass on as my own was my own mother.
It was only in death that my mother could do something good for her daughter.
You and I are the same.
Would you still approve of us today?
When this is all over, I’m gonna marry your daughter.
I died long before you were born. This is just a formality.
Well played, Ems. For the last time, well played.

10/10

SVU 26.22

Father kidnaps his son to teach him a lesson to never talk to strangers. When I heard the mother say he wanted to take him to Iran I immediately thought it would be like ‘Not Without My Daughter’, the scariest film ever starring the one and only Sally Field. The film who has been a subject of various discussions for many years and can come up in almost any conversation between my father and I. But it didn’t. Instead it wasn’t really an SVU case. Something the show has done more than half of the episodes this year. It’s definetely been the weakest season, but I believe it will get better next year.

To what do I owe the pleassure?
It was supposed to be a good lesson.

10/10

Nashville 3.22

I honestly think it was Beverly who died. I just wish we could get rid of the major storyline once and for all and just focus on the music. Layla smashing Jeff’s car seemed like such a Taylor Swift move, as she basically acted out the Blank Space video. Well, she was supposed to be the Taylor Swift to Christina Aguilera’s Katy Perry, so it works great. I am a little mad that Juliette has left Highway 65, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her, she’s an artist first. She’ll worry about her kid once she repairs her carreer.

Screw you, screw you, definitely screw you, lady.
I Rayna James take you Deacon Claybourne as my husband. Now don’t you dare leave me a widow.
I will hold my head up high, you will never see me cry.
Good news! Will Lexington is gay and I’m going on tour with Luke Wheeler.

10/10

Castle 7.23

The final ceremony was touching, and yet not compelling enough to save this season. Kate having to choose between being a captain or a states attorney is just the craziest. And here we were thinking the big plans for Kate was her getting pregnant with little Castlets. We’ll see how it works out. I love that Alexis has inly one year of college left and she still doesn’t know what she wants to do, because I still don’t have a backup plan for my life, and all my friends had all those years back in high school.

Carreer achievement in homicide.
If it wasn’t for that day in the woods, because of him, would I even be here?
Most people think that writing is a solitary profession. The long hours, the blank pages.

10/10

Bates Motel 3.10

It just wasn’t my favorite season. I loved how Norman said ‘what have you done’ to his mother, yet my favorite scene was when Norma hit Norman in the head with a vase. I have always disliked Bradley, so I don’t have some confused feelings I probably should be having. It’s not like he killed Emma. Bradley was always slutty and annoying and did not even treat Norman well.

People are usually disapointing.
We’re all doomed at the end.
Especially about the whacko Norma Bates and her son.
Mother, there’s really something wrong with you, we talked about it, remember outside the motel.
Mother would like to talk to you.
Mother, what have you done.
I did her a favor, poor girl had a feath wish, and most importantly, she was gonna take you away from me. I could never let that happen.
We belong together.

10/10

Bones 10.19

A crazy episode, what’s with Iran this week. Second episode focusing around Iran. Bones kicked Booth out of the house as she and Christine got threatened by some guy Booth owed 30 000. I am a little surprised to be honest, while my dad said he totally deserved it. Now back to Bones, they haven’t mentioned Angela and Hogins’ move to Paris, so I’m just gonna pretend the talk never happened. I am surprised to see Camille so surprised about Arastoo’s religion. It’s the third episode when she’s geniunely surprised about the customs. Shouldn’t you read about your fiancees religion when you date him, not to mention she has a PhD and yet she acts all dumb. I expected more from her. I just can’t stand ignorance on basic things, as you really don’t have to read much to know the basics.

I love you.
I don’t believe you. Go.

The Good Wife 6.23

I am not going to get into that Alicia/Kalinda scene as everyone else is. We’ve known about their quarrel for some time now, and we tried not to let it get to us. Yes, they did not film together, now move on. I am excited for Alicia partnering with Canning. I hope she does, nothing could be more interesting now, as the show was almost as dull this year as season 1. But then at least we had our Alicia/Kalinda friendship. I want to see Alicia and Canning arguing cases against Diane and Cary. It hurts not to know what Kalinda will do with her life, we didn’t even get a first draft of what her future will look like. We can assume she’ll be okay, but we don’t know if she even stays in Chicago.

Did you know Louis Canning’s wife works here?
Ask A for possible cooking recepies.
Made me miss sitting in a bar deinking with you.
My time with you as a friend was the best.
I’m sorry it got messed up.
I’ll never see you again.
I don’t think so.
Damn you three!
It’s Kalinda’s letter to me.
It said goodbye.
What is it with all those tough talking women!?
Wanna partner?

10/10

Scandal 4.22

Chuck shot the whole bus of jurors. But I am so pissed at this finale as Fitz threw Mellie out of the White House! And not just Mellie, Cyrus too! And of course now he’s living with Olivia, in the White House! Wtf, Shonda? How is that possible!? I don’t think Huck is dead and I have had enough of B613. Sure keep the father but enough with the B613 talk. Also, Cyrus was the one who auctioned Olivia off.

Are you going to tell your team mate you added slaughter to your resume?
Is thia why you wanted Olivia Pope auctioned off?
So much for being good guys, huh, Rosen?
Me running aroung like Nancy Drew.
I can’t have a soul. If i had I would never accomplish anything.

10/10

The Simpsons 26.21

Stupid Flanders.
Uncle Homer is not nice to you.
If you take her hand, you’ll enter world of puberty.
Are you being bullied?
I hate Ned Flanders because he’s better than me in everything.

3.5/10

Younger 1.08

Liza has to get together with Mariska’s husband and let the kid go. I think she tells him the truth in episode 12, as Sutton wrote on twitter they have a serious scene (finally). I am glad we still have 4 episodes till the break, as we know half of the summer shows aren’t coming back till september (our guilty pleasures, light as summer – faking it and switched at birth). I love Hilary Duff’s character, she’s so fresh and brings light to the show.

I don’t want to be one of those women who wake up in their 40s realising they forgot to live their life.
Here you are in a totally different department.
Is he looking?
He sure is.
Can we put on our sweats and watch Downton Abbey?
I’m the one sleeping with your husband.
You sure you’re 26?

Absolute Power

Clint Eastwood comes back as a director and casts himself as a thief who witnesses a crime. His character does some great sketches and the film features young Laura Linney. Overall, a good thriller that I will definitely buy on DVD.

10/10

The Details

I tried to watch it when it came out, but it seemed like just another stupid comedy. I wasn’t wrong, but it was funny at times. Laura Linney as a middle aged cat lady got my full attention, but that oh so ridiculous and try-way-too-hard sex scene was too much even for a person who thinks the highly controversial sex scenes in Savage Grace are absolute masterpieces.

5/10

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure

I do not remember much from the first part, since I haven’t seen it since the 90s, but this one was purely excellent. Sally Field and Michael Caine killed it, and the movie joins my 100 favorites.

10/10

Sometimes They Come Back Again

As I was checking what films to see this month, I bumped into this one,one of the few Hilary Swank films I haven’ seen yet. It was disappointing, but then again, I haven’t read this particular Stephen King story nor have I seen the first film.

5/10

Thinner

I remember reading this scary novela in middle school and the film was an adequate adaptation. I think it was part of the Skeleton Crew series by Stephen King, if I remember correctly.

7/10

Cat’s Eye

Since I was watchng another Stephen King adaptation, this one seemed like a good fit when it popped up. It may seem to be about animals, but to my dissapointment, it was nothing like Pet’s Sematary.

5/10

Inside Man

Man, was I postponing watching this one for eight years or what. Now I see why. Not enough Jodie Foster, other than that, bearable. Clive Owen hasn’t disappointed me yet.

7/10

Twelve Monkeys

I was a little surprised how well it turned out. It’s such a shame Madeleine Stowe did not have a great carreer after the 90s ended, she deserves all the attention she is getting in Revenge and so much more.

10/10

The General’s Daughter

The three scenes that will stay in my head are: the brutal gang rape, Madeleine’s character getting attacked by the alleged rapists and the alternate ending which was so much better than what they went with. The way she was backing off when he started walking towards her and the kiss were more than cute, they were excellent.

6/10

Closet Land

This film took my breath away, minimalism is everything. Two amazing actors (Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe), one room, no rules. Postmodernism at its best.

9/10

Being Flynn

It had a great deal of personal meaning to me, because of the writing and Julie’s character’s suicide, but I feel the film is not for everyone, and many could find it plain boring. Thankfully, I’m not that person.

8/10

The Big Lebowski

Don’t we just all love cult films? Surely I loved the Dude’s way of life the second time around too, but this time I focused on Maude Lebowski’s feminism and her vaginal art. Dude’s friend remains my favorite character though.

10/10

Marie and Bruce

I was forcing myself to love this film and it was not bad, especially the party scenes when Julie Moore’s character listened in on everyone’s conversations, but it got bad around the time she said she wanted to go home and yet stayed. I thought Evolution was the worst film starring Julianne Moore, now we have a tie.

The remaining films I watched between December – August. For some reason I haven’t posted them yet. The notes got lost between the move, and uni and work and another move.

Lincoln

With The Impossible movie of the year.

10/10

Silver Linings Playbook

10/10

Not Without My Daughter

No film has ever scared me as much as this one.

10/10

Mrs. Doubfire

I am job.

10/10

Catch Me If You Can

What an amazing film.

9/10

Sinister

Not as good as Insidious, but still creepy at times.

7/10

Nine miles down

I was truly surprised by this one, even though I found some of the acting annoying.

8/10

Taken 2

Almost as good as part one.

Do you know how to shoot?
No.
Then drive.

7/10

The Assassins

Yet another action film with Stallone, Julianne Moore, again playing just an accessory to men and Antonio Banderas in the role I actually almost liked.

7.5/10

Losing Isaiah

7/10

Unknown

Disappointed with this one.

5/10

The Cave

Not nearly as good as The Descent.

4/10

Freshman Fall

An amazing and inspiring lifetime film.

I can’t concentrate. I don’t eat. I can’t sleep.
I drank too much, I forgot I haven’t eaten and I went upstairs with this guy and he had sex with me.
It was the first week of school, I went to this frat party and things got out of control.
I said no. I didn’t want to, but he wouldn’t stop. He wouldn’t listen to me. He ripped off my clothes.
Just because you knew the guy, doesn’t mean it wasn’t rape. If you said no, and he did it anyway, you were raped.
I shouldn’t have gone upstairs.
I don’t want you to think any less of me. Mom, I was raped. I had too much to drink, it was dumb.
Still that doesn’t give anyone the right to rape her.
It’s not fair that he could do that to me and just go on like nothing happened.
Why are you doing this to me?
Because you raped me.
As if rape can be mediated.
Rape is rape whether a woman’s drunk or not.
If there’s any doubt in your mind, she means no.
You’ll what? Rape me again?
Nothing like that could ever happen to me.
It’s my turn, so shut up. I’m talking.
I thought if I pretended that it was no big deal, it would just go away, but it didn’t. I forgot who I was and why I came here. I lost my scholarship, I lost everything.

10/10

Little Black Book

I modelled then I barfed quietly.
Oh good, narration.
Would you look at this cervix?
Textbook.
Damn proud of you.
How do you know her?
We did a show last year on bulimia.
I got sick that night and not on purpose.

10/10

The Christmas Hope

7/10

Girl Fight

5/10

The Internship

7/10

Rogue

Not impressed.

4/10

Bunnyman

I really do not think the girl would be jumping on a tree right after being raped. It was very low budget, but also very gore and good.

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started as weekly reviews on movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, partially thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd, and partially because of my demanding day job.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

favourite film and tv quotes

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘I used to think about
your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I  knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’ (Disobedience)

‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’ (The Aviator)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’
‘No, actually you do. Your mother quit your father. Your father quit you. You quit your boyfriend and if I read your hospital chart correctly you quit your life momentarily on a couple of occasions. You quit. It’s what you know how to do.’ (Greys)

‘Where the hell was I that year?’
‘Your were watching television’. (Everybody Loves Raymond)

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’
(Short Term 12)

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’ (Disobedience)

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a moment when our lives change forever. The moment we admit our weaknesses, the moment we rise to a challenge, the moment we accept a sacrifice, or let a loved one go. And sometimes the change in our lives is an answer to our prayers.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘I love You.’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’
‘When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.’
‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

‘Dr, I have been this way since…since I can remember. There is no cure.’ (American Horror Story)

‘He was so crazy about me, I couldn’t breathe. So we tried drinking our way back into love, but it never made sense in the morning. So I ran. And every time I came back, he was here. And he was still crazy about me.’ (My Blueberry Nights)

‘Bree van de Kamp had always wanted to live her life with elegance and grace. That is also how she wanted to die. Her plan was to pour herself a glass of her favorite chardonnay, put on her most stylish nightgown and leave behind a note on embossed stationery.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘All we have is this moment. The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid being alive today. So be… here…. now.’ (Six Feet Under)

‘On the train coming here, we were in the same cart, I saw you, you were reading and you feel asleep. I didn’t dare to look at you, you were so beautiful, it was scary. Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a time when we must expose our weaknesses. When our secrets can no longer remain private, when our solitude can no longer be denied, when our pain can no longer be ignored, but sometimes we feel so alone that a weakness we thought we’d overcome suddenly becomes too strong to fight.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’
‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
‘Okay, but what about you?’
‘That is me. And you? Are you happy?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Have you been with other women?’
‘No. Not really. And you?’
‘No.’
‘But, Esti… Do you still
only fancy women?’ (Disobedience)

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’ (Thelma & Louise)

‘She let me live at Nora’s house. She let me believe that I was a part of their family. I fell in love with that family. What am I supposed to do, just sit there, pretend I’m related to them? I was happy. For the first time in my life I was happy.’ (Brothers and Sisters)

‘You will be left all alone with your bitterness and your rage and your knowledge that you loved her and she loved you and you threw it away for them.’
‘Do you love her?’
‘Yes.’
‘And Have you always?’
‘Yes.’
‘So then ask her.’
‘Olive, will you forgive me?’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘No razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’
(Short Term 12)

‘You can’t take a picture of this. It’s already gone.’ (Six Feet Under)
