Sad to hear Schooled has been cancelled. At least we still have The Goldbergs, which was just renewed for season 8. The Resident got renewed too! I just need to know about Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and that’s all my shows for the year. Now I’m just waiting for Younger to come back, which should be sometime next month. These are my last reviews, I have nothing left in my notebook. I now need to catch up on Good Girls, The Good Fight, Killing Eve and Top of the Lake, and finally watch Little Fires Everywhere and Mrs America. For the next few months you’ll see a lot of film reviews (I’ve been obsessed with Mubi the last few months).

Four of my Netflix shows are coming back in June, and I’m not happy that they’re all returning one by one. What am I going to look forward to between July and 2021? No shows will be filming this summer. The shows coming back in June are:

Fuller House – 2nd of June
13 Reasons Why – 5th of June
F is For Family – 12th of June
The Politician – 19th of June

I’m scared of what I’ll rate The Politician. I only started watching it because of Jessica Lange working with Ryan Murphy again. It didn’t look like something I might like, but then I was working a night shift and was on my break and I was too tired to follow a film plot, so I thought I’d give it a try. I hardly liked it. I’ll probably give season 2, 2 ouf of 10 and that will prove what a waste of time this show is. Later in June I’ll catch up on the 6 shows I mentioned above. I’m currently watching Mad Men before it expires from Netflix, and it upsets me almost as much as it did when I started watching it all these years ago. Don Draper is not a good guy. What I do is I fast forward through the storylines I’m not interested in, like relationships I know won’t last and watch all or most scenes with Joan, Peggy and little Sally.

How To Get Away With Murder 6.15

The series finale. Goodbye, How To Get Away With Murder, you were so good! Thanks for being a wonderful addition to my life for the last 6 years! Now I’m forever stuck crying over Frank and Bonnie. The episode starts with them making us believe that someone shot Annalise on the court’s steps. Bonnie doesn’t make it and that’s the one thing that leaves me heartbroken. No one deserved a happy ending more than Bonnie. Wes’s son riding his bike just like Wes did in the opening scene of the show and then taking over Annalise’s How To Get Away With Murder class? Brilliant. And he went to Middleton and Annalise was his mentor? Tegan finally professes her love to Annalise, who turns her down, or does she? They’re seen dancing in flashforwards.

You’re the one who kept us together, Bonnie. We pretended like it was Annalise, but it was always you who kept us safe.
Frank is ride or die for you, just like Bonnie, just like me.
Dead witness when I get my hands on him.
7 grand, just don’t take the stand against Annalise.
Your dad made me kill your sibling.
Your dad killed Lyla, and you know how I know? He had me do it.
I’m a survivor. I survived getting taunted by the N word when I was in grade school. I survived the sexual abuse by my uncle when I was 11. I survived losing my first love, Eve, because I was scared to be gay. Then the death of my son in a car accident, then the murder of my husband. Then alcoholism, depression, grief. And every death leading up to this trial. Who I am is a 53 year old woman from Memphis, Tennesse, name Anna Mae Harkness. I’m ambitious, black, bisexual, angry, sad, strong, sensitive, scared, fierce, talented, exhausted. And I am at your mercy.
I think I’m in love with you Annalise. I tried to fight it, but I’m taking my mask off too. I cannot not have you in my life, because I love you.
What do you really want?
Love, and I can give that to you. I can make you happy.
I can’t promise you the same.
Oliver, thank you. Now I know how to love.

Station 19 3.16

We learn Andy’s mom is still alive, which is the opposite of what her father let her believe. Andy spends the entire episode thinking her mother killed herself, but she is in fact, very much alive, despite not having any contact with Maya for 20 years. Maya’s father visits and abuses her by pulling her hair. Maya then decides to chop her ponytail off. She then runs to Karina, apologises to her and they get back together. Teddy Altman witnesses it and tries to help Maya convince Karina to take her back. Pac North was bombed and according to rumors, the same was supposed to happen to Grey Sloan Memorial on Greys. Bombs were most likely left in all Seattle hospitals. Apparently one of the Greys regulars was supposed to die too, and my money is on Avery.

Now I think my mother killed herself.
The body remembers the event, the body remembers the trauma.
Sometimes a breakthrough can look like a breakdown.
Why are we carrying rodents, 19?
See, I told you, sex offender.
I ruined the best relationship I’ve ever had, because of him.
You should forgive her.
I love you Maya.

911 3.17

In this episode, a kid gets stuck in an air balloon, after her mother doesn’t even think to hold onto the rope, after disembarking the balloon first. And like my mom said while we were watching this, she didn’t even thank the team for saving her daughter! Kid is saved after Buck jumps into the balloon. A lady gets electrocuted after carjacking a truck, later a male gets stuck in a freezer. Athena pretends she’s SVU’s Olivia Benson. The serial rapist is still at large and Athena decides to stupidly chace after him herself. While Athena is dying, the team including her husband Bobby listen to her getting beat up. I can’t wait to see next week’s episode with the train derailment and Abby’s big comeback! Good for Hen for wanting to go back to school, I’m going back to uni after years of working, so I can relate, but I just hope there’s a way we can keep her on working weekends? I’ll miss her too much.

He took pieces of me.
Send an ambulance, two.
Hearing her struggle.
I’m thinking of going to med school.
There’s been a derailment.
Sounds like you’ve done this before.
I’ve sat where you are.

One Day at a Time 4.06

It’s the midseason finale. Rita Moreno has a wonderful monologue by the end of the episode about how where she grew up is no longer her home.

I guess my mom knows how to get chicks.
Sometimes I just say random stuff. 2 months ago, the In and Out cashier said ‘Have a Good Day’ and I said ‘Thanks, Mommy’.
There’s like sex and then the next thing you know, you’re married and then you get a divorce and then I’m a single mother struggling to have it all.
So, am I looking at a man now?
Mom, Elena’s being mean to me.
Hey, do you guys know pudding can last a year?
This could be her last chance to see a moon.
Max makes her happy, not pudding happy, but happy.
You’re here for a couple of months and then you’re gone for a couple of months? That’s like my dream!
I waited so long to do this.
I’m just glad we’re finally going to do it.
Are you sure you’re ready?
I’m r-r-ready.
Should we just jump off the roof?
Leslie, help me take this top off!
Don’t scare an old man like Leslie like that.
It was not the Cuba that I remembered. Everything was still there, but it wasn’t home anymore. I guess I wanted to walk back into a photograph, but you never can. I realised, wherever we are is home.
She always spoke so highly of Roberto’s zuccini.
Abuelita always says I remind her of you. I get it, you were a good looking man.
You loved me, I know you would have accepted me.

Greys 17.21

It’s a good finale, but it’s not Greys good, simply because the final four episodes were cut short by coronavirus. Teddy cheats on Owen for the last time, and Owen overhears it over the phone. De Luca figures out what’s wrong with Richard. He recently had a hip replacement and the cobalt from the new knee has caused an infection. Meredith takes Richard’s blood in less than 2 seconds. Poor Link is taken away from the birth of his child to do an emergency surgery on Richard. Bailey stays with Amelia, and gets behind her just like George did back in season 3 when she was giving birth. Apparently one of the regular characters was supposed to die in the unaired season finale. There were bombs in a nearby hospital in Station 19, so I’m thinking it wasn’t just that one hospital that was targeted. My money is on Avery as the person who was supposed to die. But really it could have also been: Koracick, Owen or Amelia. I would rather sacrifice Avery.

You’re getting married in like two months.
Today.
I love Owen.
And me.
People who smile all the time are clowns and psychopaths.
I am marrying Owen, this was goodbye.

How To Get Away with Murder 6.14

Laurel’s the witness and Michaela testifies that Annalise and Wes were having an affair. Tegan and Bonnie gush over Annalise. Hannah is found dead.

You’re Annalise damn Keating.
I’m more than competent to represent myself.
I negotiated probation.
She was sleeping with him.
Did you report him to ICE? Is this not your voice?
That’s not me.
Michaela got a better deal.
I’m a bisexual woman.
Number 3 is not liking that.
A camp that never existed.
All this time I thought you were a good person.
Annalise freaking Keating, she’s no one if not a lawyer.
Or you’re just afraid you’ll lose her.
She makes me feel alive.
Why do you think I stayed all this time?
How to Get Away With Murder? Please, How To Ruin Everything.
You don’t say ‘No’ to professor Keating.
Annalise and Wes weren’t sleeping together.
Wes did it on his own.
I’m sorry I lied, Annalise.
Annalise Keating is dead.
I negotiated a new deal.
My brother’s dead.
Why would Frank kill Hannah?

10/10
Station 19 3.15

A junkie holds Ben and Avery hostage. Avery gets shot and the junkie is hit by a car and dies. Karina tries to convice Maya that her father was abusive to her. Maya is so upset she cheats on Karina. We learn Victoria was doing musical theatre until the play’s director died in fire and she met Captain Herrera.

Never apologise for you emotional life.
My grandmother died and my parents just went back to work.
I thought I was safe joggining in the middle of the day. Why would you go running in the dark?
My dad is bipolar 1 and my sweet little brother has inherited it.
If it makes you feel any better, the stabbing victim was a rapist.
Guess I am broken.
Herrera is the reason I became a firefighter.
I just slept with Jack an hour ago, so be mad at that.
I came out to my dad and I quit.

Good Girls 3.04

Once again, congrats to Good Girls on their renewal! I’m still a few episodes behind, I should catch up next week. Dean is adement he can kill Rio and buys a shotgun. Ruby’s daughter finds her mom’s money and figures out her mom hasn’t made that money legally. Ruby’s daughter steals an expensive pen and ponds it off. Beth shows Rico how she makes fake money and he decides she’s more useful alive.

I need to kill a man.
He reads US Weekly?
In Touch, the lady from next door gave him it.
She can’t be serious, snacks on snacks?
You’re the resident crime lord.
Why is there a shotgun on our bed?
I don’t know what you do, but it doesn’t come from painting nails.
You’re a big time now, you’re a criminal.
Need a hand?
Aren’t you full service?
What do you think?
I think I need you alive.

8.5/10

The Goldbergs 7.22

Beverly walks in on Adam and his girlfriend making out. They disposed off the replacement of his second girlfriend so fast! I didn’t even notice her leave? Was that last season? What happened there? I remember she was all goth-y looking when she replaced the girl from Girl Meets World, but why did her and Adam break up? Was she here more than 2 episodes? Beverly and her friends read Fried Deep Green Tomates. Lanie’s back.

Basement kissing ia s teen rite of passage.
You should be wearing pants,
I was, earlier.
The first marital pleasure?
What is that hanging in the air?
The loss of innocence.
That happened sooner than I thought.
The next time you need kisses so badly, you come to your momma.
Oh balls.
Manly taste and desires.
Why are all my friends into you? You’re built like Winnie the Pooh.
Middle aged man can’t tell children how to love?
I only made 875 dollars last year.
Can you imagine me as an adult, stuck in this town?

Riverdale 4.19

That was the most predictable plot twist the show’s had. Of course they joke, fantasise and write about killing Mr Honey, and then someone actually kills him. What else was gonna happen. The kids get their parents to convince the principal to reinstate prom.

There will be no yearbook this year.
The only thing that would stop Mr Honey is if we killed him.
Killing Mr Honey.
RIP, Mr Honey.
Who else has experience in getting rid of a dead body?
He’s like the Grinch who stole prom.
And what will you do to me?
We’re just muscle.
Don’t mess with us in our own town.
In this town, we’re all monsters, we’re all monsters.
The question is are we going to be monsters in college or in jail?
I am Stonewell Prep’s new headmaster.

911 3.15

A boy gets stuck in a well and this episode reminded me of The Descent. I love that film so much. Eddie goes down to get the boy out, but the team lifts him too early and he decides to cut the rope that holds him. He’s close to drowning whe he decided to swim and finds his way out.

I’m still alive down here!

4.5/10

911 Lone Star 1.09

Another The Descent reference! Why on Earth would you go exploring random caves. A kid stuck a little racing car up his nose and the father does the same to see how the kid got it up there so far.

You were lucky your brother in law threw you in the pool.
Smell the carpet.

Four of the shows I watch still haven’t been renewed, The Resident, The Goldbergs, Schooled and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. I haven’t looked at the ratings this year, so let’s look now.

The Goldbergs only had 3.7 – 4.8 mln viewers, whereas last year it was 4.5 – 5.6 mln.

The Resident only had 3.4 – 4.8 mln viewers, and last year it had 4.5 – 5.5 mln.

Schooled only had 2.8 – 3.3 mln viewers, last year 3.4 – 4.5 mln.

All 3, a full mln less this year.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist between 1.9 – 2.0 mln.

Comedies cost less, since the running time is only 21 minutes per episode, but let’s not forget Cougar Town, a great show that was cancelled by ABC after season 3 of it’s 6 season run, even though it had over 4 mln viewers, very similar ratings to what The Golbergs had this season.

Good Girls had 1.5 mln viewers and yet it got renewed yesterday, so really when you think about it, it’s impossible to figure out what’s going to happen next week. It could just be that ABC is stricter than NBC.

911 3.16

A deaf woman is trapped and Buck and Eddie jump from another building’s rooftop to safe her. Then Buck pulls himself down on a rope and breaks the window. Then the rope caught fire. Then they jump on the inflatable safety mattress. Then a pervert uses his drone to stalk his future victims. Henrietta does a thoracotomy on a patient.

Operating a drone without a licence.
I’m a realtor, I’m taking pictures of the area.
Yes, I do sometimes think of Abby.
He’s a Peeping Tom.
Good job, Firefighter Wilson.
Henrietta Wilson.
You will never be alone. He didn’t have a sister.

911 Lone Star 1.10

Everything electric dies in a solar storm. Michelle is attacked and her long lost sister finds her. A plane lands on electric wires and Owen climbs an electric tower and then slides across to the plane. Meanwhile his son tries to save a drowning bus driver. Astronauts are burned by radiation, one of them makes a phone call home, and dies while on the phone with his little daughter.

Daddy, but you’re not on Earth.
I found my sister, she’s alive. And then I lost her again.

10/10

Schooled 2.21

Lanie breaks up with Barry, she goes to see Clueless, dresses like Cher and has a Cluless realisation about CB. Lanie and CB finally get together. Come on, ABC, season 3 please?

Stuck a note in her Build-A-Bear.
I’m happy, I’m free, I’m basically a Sheryl Crow song.
Oh My God, I like CB!
You were right, CB and I were meant to be together.
You can’t always get what you want.
Don’t go to Brazil.
Why not?
Because I want you to stay.
Give me a reason to stay.
Taking chances is scary, you don’t always know how it’s going to work out, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Because life can be unpredictable. You can start off in one place, and wind up somewhere totally different. And you’re not exactly sure what to do next, you’re left wondering what the future will hold, but excited to find out.

7.5/10

The Goldbergs 7.23

In this season finale, Bria asks Adam to go to her senior prom with her.

Who’s the short haired girl?
Goldnerd, stop dancing to your inner soundtrack.
I’ve got Footloose, Back to the Future and Pretty in Pink.
That dress is iconic, they named the movie after it.
Moonstruck, turning and re-renting.
Mama, I’m worried.
Who put you in such state of agitation? I’ll have them expelled or fired from school depending on their age.
Literally no rules apply to me.
You’ve got your pick of your momma’s bras.
Let’s talk about the after prom party, when you’re done giving this new student a tour.
History shows, when you involve your mom, it ends badly.
You were sitting here when I walked in, so that was no notice at all. When I asked you to leave you said ‘I’m not your hair’.
You’re more like that woman with the Ronald McDonald hair.
Life doesn’t work out like in the movies.
Usually not, but every once in a while you get a movie moment. And whether you do something with it, well, that’s up to you.
Yep, as time goes by, the details get fuzzy but one thing has ever been clear. It was 1980 something, and it was awesome.

10/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.11

I just typed Zoey 111 and started thinking about Zoey 101 for a brief minute. Zoey and the family are trying to find a final resting place for her dad. There is a scene in this episode that shocked me, because I found it borderline inappropriate. It’s the scene where they all start singing at a funeral home. Joan joins her coders at work after she lets Zoey have a day off to spend it with her family. Max gets fired.

That’s right by the highway and you know your dad hates the traffic.
Go home. You were here when I was going through something.
What’s up ZZ Top?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in a hoodie.
Hey, Red, do you think you can take an hour away from your family tonight? You look like you could use it.
My mom looked like Aubrey Hepburn, but talked like a college football coach. I was preparing my presentation for the Google smart pencils. Remember that?
Barely?
Exactly. Work may seem like it’s the most important thing but you will never get this time back, so please stop apologising.

8/10
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.12

This is the season finale of the first season. The season ends with a 7 minute re-endition of ‘The Day the Music Died’ and death of Zoey’s father. One of the characters sings Nick Jonas’s ‘Jealous’, Max sings Pitbull’s ‘I want Ya’ to Zoey. Zoey tries to get Max rehired on her floor, but he refuses saying the job promotion showed him he should aim higher. Zoey’s really into that and finally returns Max’s feelings. Joan gets a job offer, after the Sparklepoint CEO admitts he may be going to jail. Zoey has one last dance with her father before he passes.

Can I hire him back?
There’s a pretty good chance I’ll be going away for a while. Would you be interested in running Sparklepoint? for 6 months, 18 if they find a hard drive in my sister’s basement.
High moon, it rose.
Those musical numbers, I’m not minding them anymore like I used to.
Dance with me.
Heart songs.

Her name is Eve. And we were more than just friends.
Be honest, are you a lesbian?
I don’t know.
How do you not know? You either like ladies or you don’t.
Maybe those men were just me running away from being different.
Did you love her, Anna Mae? Eve?

911, 911 Lone Star, everybody loves raymond, greys, greys anatomy, law and order: svu, modern family, one day at a time, ozark, reviews, schooled, svu, the goldbergs, tv, tv show reviews, tv shows

Modern Family has ended, more on the finale, below. I’ve got 4 days left until my holiday, which I’ll spend in my living room staring at the TV. I’ve had the watchlist ready for weeks. Yesterday I’ve started watching 911: Lone Star and my parents and I are hooked on it. It’s not as good as 911, but It’s interesting enough. I’m not a fan of Rob Lowe’s, but we did love Brothers and Sisters, and I did watch The Leftovers. Both 911 and 911 Texas have been renewed for new seasons. My dad and I watched the new season of Ozark two weeks ago, and honestly, I liked the 3rd season so much, it’s all I can think about. That and the Blackfish documentary I watched on Netflix 4 days ago. Ozark returned after over a year and a half, and I really hope there’s a 4th season. I’ll post much more often once my holiday starts, even though I do feel I’ve been consistent this year. I’m writing this post while watching Madhouse starring Vincent Price. I just love all these dark, gothic, Poesque horrors with Price. Once lockdown finished TV studios including Netflix will need to re-think their scheduling and prioritise TV shows. Dead to Me is back in 3 weeks, but Younger normally returns in June and The Handmaid’s Tale soon after. The Society hasn’t filmed much, but should be back in May too, and 13 Reasons Why is a summer show too. Not sure how much has been shot though, but all shows, including the Fall season ones could come back even 6 months late. Let’s say the lockdown is lifted in July, won’t actors complain that they haven’t had a proper holiday, even though they would have been off for 3 months at that point? We’ll see.

Greys 16.19

We learn that Teddy is bisexual and the girl she was seeing and was in love with, died in one of the Twin Towers. We learn that Teddy named her daughter after her. I don’t know why they spend so much time on Maggie, we don’t want to know anything more about her. I’m just happy Richard is not leaving, after Karev’s disappointing exit, I’m not ready to get to know anyone new.

Do you miss her?
Every day of every week of every year of my life.
You were the last person she was trying to call.
Yes, Alison loved me, but she also loved you.

SVU 21.17

Ballerinas are recorded having sex with male ballet dancers, and then they’re forced to sleeping with producers and choreographers. I really liked the Norma Rae reference coming from a millenial. It’s like the Riverdale references to 40s films no 17 year old would know of, like Gaslight. I guess I should just be happy I know them.

He would watch the videos like the girls were auditioning for him.
He pressured you, he extorted you, that’s rape.
Rape culture is such a big part of this company, they don’t see it anymore.
This isn’t just balet, churches, news organisations, movie sets, when your boss is a predator, people are afraid.
You want me to be the Norma Rae of the National Ballet?
You want this life, you pay the price.

Modern Family 11.16

Mitchell, that was your last eye roll in this house.
These are the kids’ grandparents.
Mitch is struggling to say goodbye to the house.
That’s elder abuse!
You messed with the wrong Gamma.

2.5/10

Modern Family 11.17/18

I usually cry uncontrolably during series finales, and yet I didn’t get emotional once. All kids have moved out with Alex moving to Switzerland, Luke to Oregon for college and Mitch, Cam, Lily and the baby move to Missouri.

5/10

Schooled 2.18

Rick convinces Lanie to find her mother, who walked out on her and her dad 15 years prior, back when Lanie was a teenager.

You’re sure you’re right handed?
My shower is gonna look like the scene from Psycho, but Smurf.
Did I just think of a perfect movie pitch?
Wow, 15 years.
Oh my god, I’m dating Barry Goldberg.
Now I’m a music teacher at William Penn.
Rick Mellar, friend and co-worker.
5 years sober.

The Goldbergs 7.18

In that direction, pass the trees.
We’re not Hansel and Gretel.
You watch a lot of Lifetime movies, don’t you?
He slipped through the chimney like a turtleneck Santa.

2/10

The Goldbergs 7.19

Barry and Erika go on a Spring Break and Adam learns he doesn’t have the grades to get into NYU and we learn that the real Adam Goldberg got into NYU for submitting a great play he wrote.

I just wanna make movies.
You were talking about film school since you were in kindergarten.
We’re gonna wow NYU so hard they’re gonna have to accept you.
Adam, this play is incredible.

One Day at a Time 4.01

Ray Romano guest stars, they should have done everything in their power to keep him. After getting cancelled by Netflix last year and being picked up by Pop, the writers throw a diss at Netflix in the very first minute of the season. The Everybody Loves Raymond reference made my day.

It’s like there’s nothing good on Netflix anymore.
At this point, I would rather be murdered.
And now we know all the different ways in which I’m single.
There’s no box for happy.
I’m all 3, do I win something?
So this must be your husband?
God no.
Oh yes, they taught us this, it’s nice to meet…You?
I’m gay.
Right now I don’t wanna be me.
And Papito is single.
Right, because he’s a child.
Put down that my grandmother and I are just friends.
Privleged but woke.
They will all be saying ‘Everybody Loves Brian’.
Yeah, doesn’t sound right.
A Lifetime movie. I just love watching rich people in trouble.
She didn’t give an F.
Step one, start liking women.
Step two, turn to your right.
Discuss.
All that stupid small talk. Where’d you go to high school, how many siblings do you have.

9.5/10

One Day at a Time 4.02

I didn’t like this episode one bit.

I speak Spanish.
I’m young.

One Day at A Time 4.03

That’s better. Penelope and abuelita argue over female masturbation, after Penelope’s son walks in on her and her toy.

Many shows are finishing early this year due to Coronavirus. I was secretly hoping the last few episodes would be moved to August or something. We are losing a few episodes of most shows and this is very upsetting. Does this mean all the shows need to be renewed though? So we all see how exactly the showrunners wanted to end this season. I don’t really know why This is Us has always been an 18 episode a season kind of show, but it certainly worked out for them this year. How to Get Away With Murder returns April 2nd. This list only includes shows I follow, but It should be useful for you too.

Grey’s Anatomy: April 9 (Cut short – to finish with episode 21 instead of 25)

Modern Family: April 8 (Series finale – as normal)

The Resident: April 7 (Cut short – to finish with episode 20 instead of 23)

This is Us: March 24 (Season finale already aired)

SVU: April 23 (Affected – Cut short, 20 episodes instead of 24)

911: May 11 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

The Goldbergs: May 6 (Not Affected – All shot)

Schooled: May 6 (Not Affected – All shot)

Riverdale: May 6 (Affected – Cut short from 22 episodes to 19)

Station 19: April 9 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

The Good Fight: Unknown date (Cut short from 10 episodes to 7)

How To Get Away With Murder: May 14 (Not affected – All episodes shot – Show returns April 2)

Good Girls: May 3 (Affected – Cut short from 16 episodes to 11)

Killing Eve: Unknown Date (Not affected – All episodes shot)

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: May 3 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

The Simpsons: May 17 (Not affected – All animation and voice acting done)

When Calls the Heart: April 26 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

Little Fires Everywhere: April 22 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

This year I’ve given up a few shows. I was struggling to find time to watch them, I wasn’t head over heels about the characters, so I’ve made an executive decision to cut down my loses. Shows I followed last year, but don’t anymore: The Rookie, Seal Team, The Good Doctor and Mr. Mercedes.

To see my review of 2018, click on the following link: https://joanneholly.com/2018/12/30/tv-shows-of-2018/

Last year I followed 41 shows, this year, 50.

Below are the 50 TV shows I followed this year:

1. Grey’s Anatomy

I am still sad about Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew being written off. I have mixed feelings about the show allegedly ending after season 17. Greys hasn’t been ‘Greys good’ since Season 9 and yet it’s still my favourite and it will always stay that way. Season 16 so far focuses on the crime Meredith commited last season, the insurance fraud. It’s quite surprising how this storyline mirrors the Varsity Blues scandal. Mer has done a lot of community hours and has spent a night in jail. From the looks of the midseason finale, that’s all behind us now. They have sent Betty away at the end of season 15 and she hasn’t been back to visit since. I am glad Teddy is back and I hope she never leaves. Avery is slowly becoming the most annoying character, changing his mind when it comes to relationships. Still no development on Helm and her crush on Meredith, we’ll see where they go with this. Is Helm going to be with Karina by the end of the season? I am not a fan of splitting the staff between Grey Sloan and the second hospital, but I’m guessing Grey Sloan will buy the new undeveloped one and then merge the two?

2. SVU

Season 21 and we’re making history! I just love this show. Carissi is now an ADA, and we have a new detective I’m not fond off. Fall season ended on a cliffhanger featuring Amanda and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

3. Shameless

Shameless started quite late this year, and without Emmy Rossum. Ian is back and the show is still the same, and still as exciting as ever. I’m really disappointed with how Debbie is spending the 50 grand she got from Fiona and how Frank messed it all up for her. I really thought she would ensure the money lasts them a year or two. I’m happy with how the rest of the Gallagher’s lifes are going, including the fact that Lip is now a dad!

4. Fuller House

I’m sad it’s the show’s last season. The nostalgia Fuller House brought in 2014, was something I never thought I needed. 2019 wasn’t a good year for this Full House fan. If I wasn’t a Full House fan, I wouldn’t be going through a heartbreak this year. Aunt Becky was why I got so invested in the show. Season 1 wasn’t really a family show, the three main characters kept sleeping around and other than two or three episodes, the show was boring. From the minute Aunt Becky showed up, the show got interesting. Years later, as a teenager, I watched The New Kids, and became a Lori Loughlin fan and followed every single one of her projects.

5. Carol’s Second Act

Patricia Heaton is back on my TV screen, so everything’s going to be okay. I miss The Middle, and I think my mum misses it even more. It also stars Twin Peak’s Kyle MacLachlan. Carol’s Second Act is a sitcom, and even though it’s nowhere near as good as The Middle, or Everybody Loves Raymond, it’s still a funny show and a great way to spend the 20 minutes a week.

6. American Horror Story

Sarah Paulson wasn’t back for this awful season, at least she’s shooting another two Ryan Murphy shows, Ratched and season 3 of American Crime Story, so at least there’s something to look out for. American Horror Story used to be one of my favourite shows, but sadly this season is extremely weak, everyone was dead by episode 5 and everyone was a ghost by episode 5 as well! I liked the aerobic sequences in the very first episode. I really thought it would be a Friday the 13th type of slasher like the promos suggested.

7. Crikey it’s the Irwins

This show is a delight! Nothing will stop me from revisiting Australia Zoo every time I go to Australia on a holiday. As a vegan of 9 years, I should stand against all zoos, but this series proves all the good zoos do for animal conservation. Even though guests visit, Australia Zoo is really a giant sanctuary. In the second season the Irwins are preparing for Australia Zoo’s 50th anniversary, by renovating the croc enclousure. In order to get the contractors in, they need to move all the crocs, including the biggest and the most aggressive crocs in the zoo. A beloved zebra from season 1 needs to be put down, and Terri goes back to her hometown Oregon to visit a wildlife sanctuary were her cougar Malina spent her final years. Bindi gets engaged and I just hope they show us the wedding when the show comes back for season 3. I also wish there were more episodes in the season.

8. Orange is the New Black

It ended and there will never be a show so raw and brilliant. I cannot even begin to explain what an important place this show has in my heart. Every time I hear someone say they don’t like the show because it mainly has women in it or when they say they’re not going to watch the show because of all the gay characters, I feel personally offended. I am still tearing up thinking of Dockett’s tragic end. I also hate what they’ve done to Red, Lorna and Maritza. Some pars of the ending made me happy though, for example the fact that Alex is back with her crew. I still wish they had shown us more of Big Boo and other original characters.

9. When Calls the Heart

I will never get over the fact that Abigail is not coming back. And Cody, the Culkin lookalike was taken off the show because of the Lori Loughlin scandal too. I will keep watching as long as Rosemary is there. I’ve watched 2 episodes of When the Heart Calls, the web series spin off about the orphanage a few towns from Hope Valley, but I didn’t like it at all. I’ve gotten used to the two new male characters. I doubt Netflix will add the new season to its selection, as they’ve always done it around October time.

10. Station 19

Season two was alright, but season 3 was delayed until 2020. The show’s creator left to pursue something else, which is quite odd as she’s only done 2 seasons, so from next year the show will be ran by Krista Vernoff who has been running Grey’s Anatomy, after Shonda Rhimes’s departure. One of the characters is now a quest star on Greys.

11. The Handmaid’s Tale

I even got my mom into this show! And Christopher Meloni was in 2 or 3 episodes, playing a role completely opposite from his SVU’s Elliott Stabler, a rapist! Alexis Bledel’s character got a satisfying ending, and the scene where Canadian border police officers ask her whether she’s going to be in danger if she was to be sent back to her country and she says yes, this is simply my favourite scene of the entire 2019.

12. One Day At a Time

After a quite boring season 3, and Netflix’s cancellation, the show was saved by POP and will be returning in 2020! I am still not a fan of the annoying girlfriend, but everything this shows says about immigration, PTSD and LGTBQ issues is on point.

13. The Insatiable

Season 2 differed from season 1 in the most important way, it focused on the main character, Patty’s binge eating disorder. Patty joins Overeaters Anonymous and learns the cause of her addiction to food. Yes, it’s still crazy when it comes to her psychotic behaviour resulting in murdering people, but most of the season is about her BED, and that makes it interesting.

14. The Unbelievable

A TV show about a girl who thinks she’s been raped, comes forward, and then revokes her statement, 5 times. Then two lady cops try to solve a series of rapes and eventually come across the main character’s statement. Netflix’s best show of 2019, it’s just amazing and Short Term 12 and Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever delivers a beautiful performance.

15. Big Little Lies

The show came back after 2 years, to finish what it started, it was better than season 1 because we didn’t have to sit through hours of sex and abuse.

16. Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath

This show was a hit for me. I’ve only learned about it in February, and watched all 3 seasons in two weeks. I’ve since read Leah Remini’s book ‘Troublemaker’. I am really sad to see this show go, it’s extremely informative and brings hope to victims of Scientology. It’s my favourite discovery of 2019.

17. The Goldbergs

It’s still good, but it feels like they have run out of nostalgic 80s memorbilia last season.

18. Schooled

Lanie’s spin off is now in its second season. It’s not as good as The Goldbergs, but It’s only 20 minutes a week, which makes it watchable. AJ and Aly Michalka released a single last summer, that was undoubtedly my song of summer 2019. It’s called Church and it’s amazing.

19. How to Get Away with Murder

Thank goodness it’s the last season. The first 3 seasons were great, but anything from season 4 has been bad. Someone’s killed Annalise? What was the point of the series then?

20. Killing Eve

I still haven’t caught up with season 2 fully, but I’ve been a fan of Jodie Colmer since ‘Thirteen’.

21. Ozark

My dad’s favourite show. Julia Garner is killing it every single episode. Where’s season 3?

22. Good Girls

Beth and the dealer hooked up, and Season 2 was quite different, but still entertaining.

23. Thirteen Reasons Why

I loved the first 2 seasons, but this was a mess. Why introduce a new character, and give them ALL screen time?

24. This is Us

3 more seasons yes please! I am just not okay with the writers telling us about Rebecca’s death so early in the series.

25. 911

Never disappoints with the drama, I mean the freaking tsunami blew my mind!

26. The Resident

I think I am okay with whom they killed off in the first episode, but this season introduced us to a new doctor that’s an even more arrogant copy of the new doctor they introduced last season.

27. Modern Family

Final season is here and it’s just as mediocre as everything else after season 3.

28. For the People

Sadly this Shondaland show starring Britt Robertson has been cancelled. I feel like I was the only one watching it.

29. Chernobyl

A mini docuseries from HBO everyone loves, and rightfully so.

30. Riverdale

I’m just not into it anymore. I liked season 1 and that’s it. I liked the Luke Perry tribute, but I haven’t had the time to watch all of it.

31. The Simpsons

Awesome as always. Sixty seasons should be enough for me.

32. The Good Fight

I still haven’t caught up.

33. The Good Place

They keep resetting the afterlife and it’s all the same at this point.

34. Veronica Mars

I’m just happy they didn’t kill Keith Mars, and I like the noir aspects of this season.

35. Absentia

I still haven’t fully caught up, I will update once I do.

36. F For Family

It’s a funny show and I cannot wait for season 4. I wish the main character still worked at the airport, all this vending machine business wasn’t very entertaining.

37. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I like it when it’s darker, but I just cannot stand Kiernan’s wig.

38. Divorce

The Sarah Jessica Parker show has ended and the ending surprised me. I will miss the dark humour.

39. Younger

The secret is out, Liza’s secret was exposed and she no longer has to hide. I’m a fan of Liza and Charles, but this wasn’t a good season. Kelsey makes a dumb social media mistake and gets demoted from publisher back to editor. Diana gets married. The Irish girlfriend’s baby storyline doesn’t give immigrants a good rep.

40. When They See Us

I watched it for Vera Farmiga and I knew about this case from Law and Order: Special Vicitms Unit.

41. Looking For Alaska

I used to know this girl who was obssesed with this book and always said Looking For Alaska is John Green’s best work. I haven’t read the book, so I can just rate the story for what the show is. As a child of immigrants, who don’t speak the language, I related to one of the characters. Sometimes the pressure of your family’s livelihood depending on you is too much. I know it’s got to me a few times when I had to figure out what to do in stressful situations I wouldn’t have been in had i known my family was safe and happy among their own. Acting as a translator for your family can have damaging effects on you, when your family’s health andlivelihood is at stake.

42. Dead to Me

‘Married With Children’ ‘s Christina Applegate and ‘Freaks and Geek’s Linda Cardelini return to TV in this dramedy about a woman who befriends her hit and run victim’s wife. Great acting from both, I’m really sad Linda didn’t get a Golden Globe nomination for her prformance.

43. Soundtrack

Madeleine Stowe is back! I remember when she retired back in the early 2000s and I kept checking up on her non existent projects while she was retired on her Texas ranch. Thankfully she returned to acting and starred in Revenge, portraying one of the best characters on television. When Revenge ended in 2015 I thought, well that’s it, she’s gonna go back to her retirement, but she didn’t! She just took a 4 year break and now she’s back! It looks like Madeleine’s husband, Dream On and Private Practice’s Brian Benben is currently on a break himself. Anyway, I’m a huge fan, and could talk about Madeleine’s filmography for hours.

Soundtrack, originally called Mixtape, is a new Netflix show about stars Madeleine Stowe, Jenna Dewan (is this why she left The Resident?) and Gradfathered’s Christina Millian.

The pilot episode has a depressing ‘This is Us’ twist. Jenna Dewan’s character’s name is Joanna (heck yes!) and she’s a dancer. Above I mention how watching season 2 of The Resident made me think of Step Up every single episode. To see Jenna’s character’s dance audition sequence to a Kelly Clarkson song of all artists, satisfied my 2006 Step Up obsession, and she dances in this show, a lot. The show features a lot of cool mash ups, and includes songs from Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Duffy, Demi Lovato to so many different genres and I will be rewatching the dance sequences a lot. I was really looking forward to seeing Marcia Cross when I noticed this title was added to her filmography on IMDB, but she only lends her voice to a character that’s a supporting’s character’s mother and only has one short conversation with that character, over the phone.

There’s going to be a similar show starting next month, called Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy and Lauren Graham, that I just cannot wait to start watching.

‘Every song is a love song’.

‘This is breathtaking, why would you ever give this up?’

44. The Politician

You know I’ll watch anything from the Murphy/Falchuk duo. It’s an average show, my least favourite from them, even lower on my list than Scream Queens. I don’t like how they used a porodied version of Gypsy Blanchard’s story in the show. We’ve seen in in The Act this year and The Act is not only an incredible mini series, but it’s also respectful and true to the story. The Politician’s secret weapon is, same as with American Horror Story, the marvelous Jessica Lange, so you know I’m gonna watch it. Speaking of the Murphy/Falchuk universe, I cannot believe we need to wait until September 2020 for American Crime Story to return.

45. The Act

A beautiful mini series about the tragic Gypsy Blanchard story with incredible performances from Joey King and Patricia Arquette. It’s my second favourite mini series of the year and eagerly waited for next episode every week.

46. The Morning Show

This Apple show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston focuses on a made up news show, and the behind the scenes sexual harassment. It’s clearly inspired by the Fox scandal, but it’s different from The Loudest Voice. In the last episode Jennifer’s character loses it and exposes everything, it’s a superb episode I’m happy there’s going to be season 2.

47. The Society

A modern Lord of the Flies meets Lost. I enjoyed this show the minute Kathryn Newton’s character executed one of the other characters.

48. Light as a Feather

I have been following Liana Liberato’s career since ‘Trust’. It’s not a good series, but it’s eight 20 minute episodes, and there are worse ways to spend your weekend.

49. Grace and Frankie

A brilliant show from the creators of Friends. I’ve been watching it since it came out back in 2016 and can’t get enough of it! Can’t wait for January when the show’s back!

50. The Loudest Voice

No way Bombshell is going to be half this good. Best friends Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts ended up playing the same character this year, Gretchen Carlson. Showtime’s The Loudest Voice is a 7 episode series about the Fox News sexual harassment.

Shows I need to catch up on (to some extent):

How to Get Away With Murder
Killing Eve
This is Us
Riverdale
Absentia
The Good Fight
Gentleman Jack
I Am the Night

I think Hollywood Darlings has been cancelled? There’s no news online, but there were no episodes released this year and Jodie Sweetin is now doing this podcast I don’t listen to.

I hope you enjoyed this post. One of my resolutions for 2020 is to go back to reviewing TV shows on a weekly basis, because I’ve caught myself a few times trying to remember the episode something happened in and had to google it every time. Had I stuck to reviewing episodes week by week, I would have quickly looked it up here.

Have a wonderful 2020!
Jo

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started as weekly reviews on movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, partially thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd, and partially because of my demanding day job.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘Don’t wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don’t. In face of what we can lose in a day, in an instant, wonder what the hell it is that make us hold it together.’  (Greys)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘What happened last year when you fell in the water?’
‘I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?’
‘You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ammunition.’
‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’

‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
