Run

The minute you’re done watching the trailer, you know exactly how the storyline will unfold, but you can look past it’s predictability. The very last minute of the film has a lovely twist. Both Sarah Paulson and newcomer Kiera Allen give stellar performances. It’s disappointing however, that some of the best shots from the trailer didn’t make the final cut. And they really should have made the film more bloody. This is the 800th film I’ve seen this year.

8/10

Sorry We Missed You

Ken Loach has done it again. Realest portrayal of life in England since his 2016 masterpiece, I, Daniel Blake. I am planning on watching every single film from Loach I can find.

9/10

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Julianne Moore was originally cast as Lee Israel, but left because of creative differences. Apparently Julie wanted to wear a fat suit and a prosthetic nose. I can’t stop wondering how she would have approached this character. My local cinema only showed two screenings of this film at their Silver Screen two years ago, sadly I had to miss it because of work and regretted not seeing it on the big screen since. I really enjoyed watching the two queer characters’ friendship. McCarthy’s portrayal of a lonely and miserable lesbian writer is her best yet. Richard E. Grant gives a wonderful performance as well.

8/10

The Long Way Home

Sarah Paulson got to act with Hollywood legend Jack Lemmon in this lovely TV drama. In one of the scenes Jack’s character references a scene from It Happened One Night and Sarah’s character doesn’t get it.

7/10

The Prestige

Every time I see Michael Caine, my mind automatically goes to this interview with Rachel Weisz where she explains to the talk show host how Caine pronounces his name, and the talk show host couldn’t contain himself because it sounds as if he’s saying ‘my cocaine’. It’s nothing new to us British folks, yet it’s still stuck in my memory. That’s it, that’s my review. Also, the minute David Bowie showed up, I realised I’ve seen this film before. And this film makes me want to thank whoever invented CPR.

8/10

All That Jazz

How on Earth has Erzsebet Foldi not been in anything since this film?! She’s fantastic in it! Also, it’s a crime how little screen time Jessica Lange has in this.

7/10

Grey Gardens

I watched this for Jessica Lange. I haven’t seen the original documentary, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. I was scared the script would be boring, seeing how most of it was them sitting in the house, but I was nicely surprised.

7/10

Mercury Rising

I mainly watched this because I recognised Miko Hughes from Pet Sematary, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Jack the Bear, Kindergarten Cop and of course, Full House. I know I’ve said this before, but it’s sad what happened to his career after the 90s. Here Miko plays an autistic kid and stars opposite Bruce Willis. I can’t say I enjoyed this film much, but hell, it’s expiring from Netflix this week, so I thought I may as well check it out.

5/10

An American Tail

I don’t know what surprised me more, a vegetarian cat or the fact that somehow I never came across this film when I was a kid.

This year I’ve given up a few shows. I was struggling to find time to watch them, I wasn’t head over heels about the characters, so I’ve made an executive decision to cut down my loses. Shows I followed last year, but don’t anymore: The Rookie, Seal Team, The Good Doctor and Mr. Mercedes.

To see my review of 2018, click on the following link: https://joanneholly.com/2018/12/30/tv-shows-of-2018/

Last year I followed 41 shows, this year, 50.

Below are the 50 TV shows I followed this year:

1. Grey’s Anatomy

I am still sad about Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew being written off. I have mixed feelings about the show allegedly ending after season 17. Greys hasn’t been ‘Greys good’ since Season 9 and yet it’s still my favourite and it will always stay that way. Season 16 so far focuses on the crime Meredith commited last season, the insurance fraud. It’s quite surprising how this storyline mirrors the Varsity Blues scandal. Mer has done a lot of community hours and has spent a night in jail. From the looks of the midseason finale, that’s all behind us now. They have sent Betty away at the end of season 15 and she hasn’t been back to visit since. I am glad Teddy is back and I hope she never leaves. Avery is slowly becoming the most annoying character, changing his mind when it comes to relationships. Still no development on Helm and her crush on Meredith, we’ll see where they go with this. Is Helm going to be with Karina by the end of the season? I am not a fan of splitting the staff between Grey Sloan and the second hospital, but I’m guessing Grey Sloan will buy the new undeveloped one and then merge the two?

2. SVU

Season 21 and we’re making history! I just love this show. Carissi is now an ADA, and we have a new detective I’m not fond off. Fall season ended on a cliffhanger featuring Amanda and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

3. Shameless

Shameless started quite late this year, and without Emmy Rossum. Ian is back and the show is still the same, and still as exciting as ever. I’m really disappointed with how Debbie is spending the 50 grand she got from Fiona and how Frank messed it all up for her. I really thought she would ensure the money lasts them a year or two. I’m happy with how the rest of the Gallagher’s lifes are going, including the fact that Lip is now a dad!

4. Fuller House

I’m sad it’s the show’s last season. The nostalgia Fuller House brought in 2014, was something I never thought I needed. 2019 wasn’t a good year for this Full House fan. If I wasn’t a Full House fan, I wouldn’t be going through a heartbreak this year. Aunt Becky was why I got so invested in the show. Season 1 wasn’t really a family show, the three main characters kept sleeping around and other than two or three episodes, the show was boring. From the minute Aunt Becky showed up, the show got interesting. Years later, as a teenager, I watched The New Kids, and became a Lori Loughlin fan and followed every single one of her projects.

5. Carol’s Second Act

Patricia Heaton is back on my TV screen, so everything’s going to be okay. I miss The Middle, and I think my mum misses it even more. It also stars Twin Peak’s Kyle MacLachlan. Carol’s Second Act is a sitcom, and even though it’s nowhere near as good as The Middle, or Everybody Loves Raymond, it’s still a funny show and a great way to spend the 20 minutes a week.

6. American Horror Story

Sarah Paulson wasn’t back for this awful season, at least she’s shooting another two Ryan Murphy shows, Ratched and season 3 of American Crime Story, so at least there’s something to look out for. American Horror Story used to be one of my favourite shows, but sadly this season is extremely weak, everyone was dead by episode 5 and everyone was a ghost by episode 5 as well! I liked the aerobic sequences in the very first episode. I really thought it would be a Friday the 13th type of slasher like the promos suggested.

7. Crikey it’s the Irwins

This show is a delight! Nothing will stop me from revisiting Australia Zoo every time I go to Australia on a holiday. As a vegan of 9 years, I should stand against all zoos, but this series proves all the good zoos do for animal conservation. Even though guests visit, Australia Zoo is really a giant sanctuary. In the second season the Irwins are preparing for Australia Zoo’s 50th anniversary, by renovating the croc enclousure. In order to get the contractors in, they need to move all the crocs, including the biggest and the most aggressive crocs in the zoo. A beloved zebra from season 1 needs to be put down, and Terri goes back to her hometown Oregon to visit a wildlife sanctuary were her cougar Malina spent her final years. Bindi gets engaged and I just hope they show us the wedding when the show comes back for season 3. I also wish there were more episodes in the season.

8. Orange is the New Black

It ended and there will never be a show so raw and brilliant. I cannot even begin to explain what an important place this show has in my heart. Every time I hear someone say they don’t like the show because it mainly has women in it or when they say they’re not going to watch the show because of all the gay characters, I feel personally offended. I am still tearing up thinking of Dockett’s tragic end. I also hate what they’ve done to Red, Lorna and Maritza. Some pars of the ending made me happy though, for example the fact that Alex is back with her crew. I still wish they had shown us more of Big Boo and other original characters.

9. When Calls the Heart

I will never get over the fact that Abigail is not coming back. And Cody, the Culkin lookalike was taken off the show because of the Lori Loughlin scandal too. I will keep watching as long as Rosemary is there. I’ve watched 2 episodes of When the Heart Calls, the web series spin off about the orphanage a few towns from Hope Valley, but I didn’t like it at all. I’ve gotten used to the two new male characters. I doubt Netflix will add the new season to its selection, as they’ve always done it around October time.

10. Station 19

Season two was alright, but season 3 was delayed until 2020. The show’s creator left to pursue something else, which is quite odd as she’s only done 2 seasons, so from next year the show will be ran by Krista Vernoff who has been running Grey’s Anatomy, after Shonda Rhimes’s departure. One of the characters is now a quest star on Greys.

11. The Handmaid’s Tale

I even got my mom into this show! And Christopher Meloni was in 2 or 3 episodes, playing a role completely opposite from his SVU’s Elliott Stabler, a rapist! Alexis Bledel’s character got a satisfying ending, and the scene where Canadian border police officers ask her whether she’s going to be in danger if she was to be sent back to her country and she says yes, this is simply my favourite scene of the entire 2019.

12. One Day At a Time

After a quite boring season 3, and Netflix’s cancellation, the show was saved by POP and will be returning in 2020! I am still not a fan of the annoying girlfriend, but everything this shows says about immigration, PTSD and LGTBQ issues is on point.

13. The Insatiable

Season 2 differed from season 1 in the most important way, it focused on the main character, Patty’s binge eating disorder. Patty joins Overeaters Anonymous and learns the cause of her addiction to food. Yes, it’s still crazy when it comes to her psychotic behaviour resulting in murdering people, but most of the season is about her BED, and that makes it interesting.

14. The Unbelievable

A TV show about a girl who thinks she’s been raped, comes forward, and then revokes her statement, 5 times. Then two lady cops try to solve a series of rapes and eventually come across the main character’s statement. Netflix’s best show of 2019, it’s just amazing and Short Term 12 and Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever delivers a beautiful performance.

15. Big Little Lies

The show came back after 2 years, to finish what it started, it was better than season 1 because we didn’t have to sit through hours of sex and abuse.

16. Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath

This show was a hit for me. I’ve only learned about it in February, and watched all 3 seasons in two weeks. I’ve since read Leah Remini’s book ‘Troublemaker’. I am really sad to see this show go, it’s extremely informative and brings hope to victims of Scientology. It’s my favourite discovery of 2019.

17. The Goldbergs

It’s still good, but it feels like they have run out of nostalgic 80s memorbilia last season.

18. Schooled

Lanie’s spin off is now in its second season. It’s not as good as The Goldbergs, but It’s only 20 minutes a week, which makes it watchable. AJ and Aly Michalka released a single last summer, that was undoubtedly my song of summer 2019. It’s called Church and it’s amazing.

19. How to Get Away with Murder

Thank goodness it’s the last season. The first 3 seasons were great, but anything from season 4 has been bad. Someone’s killed Annalise? What was the point of the series then?

20. Killing Eve

I still haven’t caught up with season 2 fully, but I’ve been a fan of Jodie Colmer since ‘Thirteen’.

21. Ozark

My dad’s favourite show. Julia Garner is killing it every single episode. Where’s season 3?

22. Good Girls

Beth and the dealer hooked up, and Season 2 was quite different, but still entertaining.

23. Thirteen Reasons Why

I loved the first 2 seasons, but this was a mess. Why introduce a new character, and give them ALL screen time?

24. This is Us

3 more seasons yes please! I am just not okay with the writers telling us about Rebecca’s death so early in the series.

25. 911

Never disappoints with the drama, I mean the freaking tsunami blew my mind!

26. The Resident

I think I am okay with whom they killed off in the first episode, but this season introduced us to a new doctor that’s an even more arrogant copy of the new doctor they introduced last season.

27. Modern Family

Final season is here and it’s just as mediocre as everything else after season 3.

28. For the People

Sadly this Shondaland show starring Britt Robertson has been cancelled. I feel like I was the only one watching it.

29. Chernobyl

A mini docuseries from HBO everyone loves, and rightfully so.

30. Riverdale

I’m just not into it anymore. I liked season 1 and that’s it. I liked the Luke Perry tribute, but I haven’t had the time to watch all of it.

31. The Simpsons

Awesome as always. Sixty seasons should be enough for me.

32. The Good Fight

I still haven’t caught up.

33. The Good Place

They keep resetting the afterlife and it’s all the same at this point.

34. Veronica Mars

I’m just happy they didn’t kill Keith Mars, and I like the noir aspects of this season.

35. Absentia

I still haven’t fully caught up, I will update once I do.

36. F For Family

It’s a funny show and I cannot wait for season 4. I wish the main character still worked at the airport, all this vending machine business wasn’t very entertaining.

37. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I like it when it’s darker, but I just cannot stand Kiernan’s wig.

38. Divorce

The Sarah Jessica Parker show has ended and the ending surprised me. I will miss the dark humour.

39. Younger

The secret is out, Liza’s secret was exposed and she no longer has to hide. I’m a fan of Liza and Charles, but this wasn’t a good season. Kelsey makes a dumb social media mistake and gets demoted from publisher back to editor. Diana gets married. The Irish girlfriend’s baby storyline doesn’t give immigrants a good rep.

40. When They See Us

I watched it for Vera Farmiga and I knew about this case from Law and Order: Special Vicitms Unit.

41. Looking For Alaska

I used to know this girl who was obssesed with this book and always said Looking For Alaska is John Green’s best work. I haven’t read the book, so I can just rate the story for what the show is. As a child of immigrants, who don’t speak the language, I related to one of the characters. Sometimes the pressure of your family’s livelihood depending on you is too much. I know it’s got to me a few times when I had to figure out what to do in stressful situations I wouldn’t have been in had i known my family was safe and happy among their own. Acting as a translator for your family can have damaging effects on you, when your family’s health andlivelihood is at stake.

42. Dead to Me

‘Married With Children’ ‘s Christina Applegate and ‘Freaks and Geek’s Linda Cardelini return to TV in this dramedy about a woman who befriends her hit and run victim’s wife. Great acting from both, I’m really sad Linda didn’t get a Golden Globe nomination for her prformance.

43. Soundtrack

Madeleine Stowe is back! I remember when she retired back in the early 2000s and I kept checking up on her non existent projects while she was retired on her Texas ranch. Thankfully she returned to acting and starred in Revenge, portraying one of the best characters on television. When Revenge ended in 2015 I thought, well that’s it, she’s gonna go back to her retirement, but she didn’t! She just took a 4 year break and now she’s back! It looks like Madeleine’s husband, Dream On and Private Practice’s Brian Benben is currently on a break himself. Anyway, I’m a huge fan, and could talk about Madeleine’s filmography for hours.

Soundtrack, originally called Mixtape, is a new Netflix show about stars Madeleine Stowe, Jenna Dewan (is this why she left The Resident?) and Gradfathered’s Christina Millian.

The pilot episode has a depressing ‘This is Us’ twist. Jenna Dewan’s character’s name is Joanna (heck yes!) and she’s a dancer. Above I mention how watching season 2 of The Resident made me think of Step Up every single episode. To see Jenna’s character’s dance audition sequence to a Kelly Clarkson song of all artists, satisfied my 2006 Step Up obsession, and she dances in this show, a lot. The show features a lot of cool mash ups, and includes songs from Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Duffy, Demi Lovato to so many different genres and I will be rewatching the dance sequences a lot. I was really looking forward to seeing Marcia Cross when I noticed this title was added to her filmography on IMDB, but she only lends her voice to a character that’s a supporting’s character’s mother and only has one short conversation with that character, over the phone.

There’s going to be a similar show starting next month, called Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy and Lauren Graham, that I just cannot wait to start watching.

‘Every song is a love song’.

‘This is breathtaking, why would you ever give this up?’

44. The Politician

You know I’ll watch anything from the Murphy/Falchuk duo. It’s an average show, my least favourite from them, even lower on my list than Scream Queens. I don’t like how they used a porodied version of Gypsy Blanchard’s story in the show. We’ve seen in in The Act this year and The Act is not only an incredible mini series, but it’s also respectful and true to the story. The Politician’s secret weapon is, same as with American Horror Story, the marvelous Jessica Lange, so you know I’m gonna watch it. Speaking of the Murphy/Falchuk universe, I cannot believe we need to wait until September 2020 for American Crime Story to return.

45. The Act

A beautiful mini series about the tragic Gypsy Blanchard story with incredible performances from Joey King and Patricia Arquette. It’s my second favourite mini series of the year and eagerly waited for next episode every week.

46. The Morning Show

This Apple show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston focuses on a made up news show, and the behind the scenes sexual harassment. It’s clearly inspired by the Fox scandal, but it’s different from The Loudest Voice. In the last episode Jennifer’s character loses it and exposes everything, it’s a superb episode I’m happy there’s going to be season 2.

47. The Society

A modern Lord of the Flies meets Lost. I enjoyed this show the minute Kathryn Newton’s character executed one of the other characters.

48. Light as a Feather

I have been following Liana Liberato’s career since ‘Trust’. It’s not a good series, but it’s eight 20 minute episodes, and there are worse ways to spend your weekend.

49. Grace and Frankie

A brilliant show from the creators of Friends. I’ve been watching it since it came out back in 2016 and can’t get enough of it! Can’t wait for January when the show’s back!

50. The Loudest Voice

No way Bombshell is going to be half this good. Best friends Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts ended up playing the same character this year, Gretchen Carlson. Showtime’s The Loudest Voice is a 7 episode series about the Fox News sexual harassment.

Shows I need to catch up on (to some extent):

How to Get Away With Murder
Killing Eve
This is Us
Riverdale
Absentia
The Good Fight
Gentleman Jack
I Am the Night

I think Hollywood Darlings has been cancelled? There’s no news online, but there were no episodes released this year and Jodie Sweetin is now doing this podcast I don’t listen to.

I hope you enjoyed this post. One of my resolutions for 2020 is to go back to reviewing TV shows on a weekly basis, because I’ve caught myself a few times trying to remember the episode something happened in and had to google it every time. Had I stuck to reviewing episodes week by week, I would have quickly looked it up here.

Have a wonderful 2020!
Jo

Our shows are back! What do you guys think about the new fall shows? I hated Notorious, I watched two episodes and it may be one of the most boring TV shows ever made. I think I’ll just stick with The Good Place. And I still need to see This is Us and The Exorcist!

Greys 13.01

I hated this opening episode with every fiber of my being. Karev beat DeLuca up, and was that eye injury really necessary?

2/10

Greys 13.02

Didn’t they close the Denny Duquette clinic back in season 6? When did it get reopened?

Felony in the second degree.
How do you plead, Dr Karev?
Not guilty.
Which parent is ready to hear that yes, your toddler i dead, but here’s a bill for quarter million dollars anyway.
Do you have a decent lawyer, do you need help?
You got along at the wedding.
It was a wedding, I had tequila.
She named her tumor after her ex husband’s mistress.
I was attacked, I remember.
I think I might have just threatened DeLucaa
Who is Mrs Petercan?
She doesn’t know that you’re madly in love with me.
What hear about you threatening DeLuca?
Where is Dr Alex? I want Dr Alex.
You were the big surprise. You were most improved. The person who beat up DeLuca is a person I thought you left a long time ago.
The Denny Duquette clinic?
We walked through doors as interns, we’re thrown into the deep end together, told to save lives together, to save each other, we become family.
I slept with Riggs.

10/10

Greys 13.03

What is happening to Greys?! Yawn, yawn, yawn. And why did they show us the eye surgery again? Other than that, Ben was just his perfect self yesterday. And Tucker Jones is so grown up! He looks 12 already!

Edit

After rewatching the episode, I realized it was actually really good.

It sucks but I’m fine.
Welcome back, Robbins.
Morgue. There’s not much emergencies in that job.
Excuse me?
You’re the boss.
I am a big chunk of this hospital, so technically I am.
I don’t want to go to jail.
That’s the guy you trained and raised or whatever.

4 9.5/10

SVU 18.01

I was running on reruns and holding on to the last straw. Season 18 started off with an intense Central Park scene, where Liv had to calm down a little child who pointed a gun at her and her son Noah. What a season opener. The episode went more into a terrorism side, than what the show is all about, but Olivia didn’t give in and did everything she could to help the abused Muslim woman. SVU covered recent mass shootings, while staging a Central Park shooting. Throughout the whole episode she had a lovely ‘fed up with perps’ attitude and Mariska was an absolute scene stealer. Here are some quotes I loved, you know the drill.

I am in the park with Noah.
I found him in Central Park, he had a gun.
Rita, you’re representing terrorists now.
Hell of a ride to get on.
She was raped and tortured by him and his brother.
Your job cost my son his life.
Rape or no rape she is a killer.
I am going to investigate a case that everyone wants me to ignore.
Unless you had in vitro, you had sex.
She asked you a question.
I want a lawyer.
Okay. (the way Mariska said ‘okay’)
I believe her and so does she.

9.5/10

SVU 18.02

A teenager was obsessed with Amanda and lied to please her and Amanda said it was not her fault he has a crush on her and that was the best part of the episode. A man rapes the only daughter of a woman who accused him of raping her years ago as the prison ‘made him a rapist’.

The girl was raped, beaten and stabbed.
She was pretty, like you.
Plus Detective Rollins…
I know she’s an attractive woman.
Detective Rollins flirted with you.
It’s not my fault he has a crush on me.
I was raped in prison all the time.

5/10

Shameless 7.01

Woah, season 7, what are you doing? I disliked most of the episode for the first time in the history of watching this show! It started off okay and then it got…boring! I didn’t know nurses had to wash coma patient’s genitalia, so thanks for that Shameless. I’ll tell repeat that to my best friend who’s finishing nursing school now. Another reason not to go into medicine. And I hated that Carl’s girlfriend practically bullied him into having a circumscription at 15, what the fuck. Not everyone is a jew, you know? The only thing I liked about this was that Lip will work at Fiona’s diner and I really enjoyed Debbie stealing these baby strollers and getting a nanny. I still don’t understand why Fiona got to keep her ex fiancee and boss was the one who moved away.

Holy Mother of Jesus.
It’s okay. I’ll just superglue it.
You’re thing is kinda weird.. It has all that extra skin. It freaks me out.
I could use an extra person on dishes.
Done.

3.5/10

The Goldbergs 4.01

When I heard The Goldbergs were doing The Breakfast Club episode, I thought it would be epic. Hell, I was expecting tears running from my eyes. I usually hate when shows act out the famous scene from this teen classic. I loved their tribute to The Goonies! And many other films, including Dirty Dancing or The Ghostbusters, etc. The only show that honored and celebrated The Breakfast Club well enough was Cougar Town a few years back.

Aww The Breakfast Club. Truly the ultimate teen movie of the 80s.
Why aren’t you moving?! Stop it! Start moving your body!I received my teaching license and I am now a substitute teacher.
See you in the halls, delicious people.
It’s just like The Breakfast Club!
I’m not the nerd!
Again, this is just like the movie.
You’re all wearing hats, like idiots.
Sincerely, The Breakfast Club.

6/10

The Goldbergs 4.02

I hope the whole season won’t be this bad. Why is Erica so obsessed with Geoff, she didn’t care about his feeling for years. I would have understood if she realized he was her soulmate, but why the sudden obsession?

Bookkeeper is not a librarian.
And most of my customers is me in different costumes.
My first professional paying gig!

1.5/10

How To Get Away With Murder 3.01

Frank shot Wes’s father and one of the students or Bonnie die at the end of season 3! Screaming in the woods as a form of letting go.

You get to be lawyers, responsible for your own cases.
Killer.
We’re good people now.
At least they chose a good photo.
Why are you always stalking me?
You were never normal, you just didn’t know it till now.
The five is in the bottom 10%.
When I look at you, all I see is Frank.

How To Get Away with Murder 3.02

I wasn’t concerned until you started talking how not concerned you are.
I did what you did. I killed a guy and I got away with it.
Wipe it clean. Everything on it.

4.5/10

Transparent 3.01

Moira’s scenes at the beginning were amazing! Anything else was awful. Ali was practically sexually assaulted, but sure whatever. Every time the kids defend their mapa’s genre I feel so proud.

Told us to sign that in case we were kidnapped.
Can you change the M please?
Go fuck yourself.
Okay, I will.
She’s a woman! Her name is Moira!
His vitals.
HER vitals!
I am not doing things I could be doing.
I don’t want to die with some arrogant asshole calling me Mr Fefferman.

Younger 3.01

All this Liza Charles business is insane. I want them to get together. I doubt he’d care that she’s 40. So she lied, everyone lies about their age. I never saw the Liza/Josh connection. Homeless man in the wedding dress, though! Excellent.

Charles kissed me in the man’s department.
The sales who picked it out…
That’s for fat people.
You want a tour?
Sure.
This is were I sit. This is where I sleep.
It was just a kiss, Liza. Let it go.

American Horror Story 6.02

Anyone actually enjoying this season? For me it’s boredom. Remember how good the first 4 seasons were? I miss Jessica Lange every time I watch this show.

Percilla. The little girl with weird clothes.
Do you see her?
I see her.
Is that the same guy you saw in the video?

5.5/10

American Horror Story 6.03

Inbred hillbillies drinking pig’s milk and then masturbated while OJ Simpson had unconscious sex with Lady Gaga. Yeah, it’s finally getting fucked up. Doll with pig’s head and other cute gory things equally on point.

Your daughter is with Perscilla.
There can never be a friendship between dead and the living.
You were screwing this woman against the tree while these hillbillies watched.

Scream Queens 2.01

I guess now we all know why they invited Uncle Jesse to the show. Yes, my favorite scene was the one where Emma Roberts took her clothes off the minute she saw John Stamos naked. I also enjoyed that a Netflix documentary exonerated the Channels. And we all know people who went to med school even though they didn’t study enough and then there are people who really should be doctors and had to retake their exams even though they were much higher than the rich ones the first time. Don’t even get me started with online med schools and doctors who can’t diagnose the simplest things and check everything online while you’re asking them questions. Is everyone else loving Kristie Ally in this as much as I am?!

That Netflix documentary that exonerated us.
Shut up, number 5!
Turns out, I love blood! Looove it!
Turns out I’m really good at poking people!
Oh my god, thank you, right?!
Uhm, let’s go over what’s expected of you.
Dr. Hot.
Through the power of the Internet, anyone can be an M.D.
Still dressing as sluts, I see.Your obvious stupidity will not get past me.
You rich dumb whores.

Scream Queens 2.02

So bad it hurt at times.

Have you graduated high shool to become a detective?
I haven’t been man handled in 2 years.
Lot of work for relatively small and insignificant amount of land.
Call the police. No don’t call them. They’re morons!
From now on, when someone is about to take off the mask, don’t interrupt them with stupid questions!

The Aviator

A beautiful portrayal of obsessive compulsive disorder. OCD characters show up extremely rarely on film, usually in one episode of a TV series. A show that went into the subject a little deeper and didn’t judge it or downplay it was Grey’s Anatomy. In season 10 one of supporting characters, Miranda Bailey developed OCD behavior for a couple of episodes, before being treated and put on medication. Back in season 2 there was a patient who had a very severe case of OCD and had to be assured everything was ‘clean, clean clean’. Most of the time if there even is an OCD character, it’s only mentioned superficially. Fortunately, in The Aviator it is perfectly shown. So realistically in fact, DiCaprio had to go to therapy himself as his own OCD amplified. Shame he didn’t get an Academy Award for his fantastic performance, I’m sure he would have won if people knew about his own struggles and how he risked his sanity to some extent. Plus his Howard Hughes performance is so much more important than his The Revenant role. Another aspect of the film that caught my attention was the focus on Hugh’s famous flying accident, that many people don’t know of or don’t remember. Every film layman has seen at least 5 Scorsese’s films, sometimes by accident, and this one comes up in those 5 most popular ones. I love how Scorsese adjusted scenography and colors with each year in colored film. Notice how blue the film seems at the beginning? More often than not Scorsese’s films lack focus on his female characters, they are added as a decoration, very stereotypical, but The Aviator ladies had just enough screen time, at times I thought they actually got a little more than expected. Cate Blanchet gave a wonderful performance as usual, and her Katherine Hepburn accent was quite delightful. One thing, which I suppose didn’t happen and was added by the scriptwriter was the last scene of Howard with Ava Gardner, portrayed by Kate Beckinsale, having a final chat with Howard and effortlessly helping him get better without realizing this saying ‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’, which calmed even me down. The film didn’t focus on Howard Hughes the director/producer, but the aviator, which is understandable since he quit cinema for planes and later was overtaken by his disorder. If you haven’t seen the Outlaw or Hell’s Angels yet, do so.

‘You don’t care about money because you’ve always had it.’

Does that look clean to you?
Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?

‘You listened to my phone calls?’
‘No! Honey I would never do that! I just read the transcripts.’

I don’t want them bribed, Jack. I want it done legally. I want them bought.

‘I feel like a little adventure.’
‘Do your worst, Mr. Hughes.’

Short Term 12

How have I not heard of this film till yesterday, when I saw it expiring on Netflix ? It was simply wonderful, one of the psychological meets mental issues meets social problems films. The minute I read the description on Netflix, I had a feeling this is were the film was going. Short Term 12 tells a story of a young social worker sexually abused by her father in the past who meets a young teenager who she suspects is going through similar abuse. I absolutely loved that the medusa and shark children story the girl wrote referring to her abuse, may as well have been about the girl’s relationship with a razor. The film includes some of the most accurate quote about self harm I have seen captured on film. I highly recommend this independent masterpiece to everyone.

‘When I was your age, I had to stand in a courtroom with a bunch of strangers and tell them all the ways that he abused me. What he hit me with. How he got drunk. How he forced me to take a shower with him. Got me pregnant. I sent him to prison. I didn’t talk about it. I didn’t think about it. Until I met you.’

‘Last night, that girl sat next to me and she cried and she tried to tell me the only way that she knew how.’

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’

‘All fucked up now, damn near 18. All the pictures in my past ain’t never fading. I’m always wishing for something amazing but when your life is shit then it ain’t no trade in so put me in your books so you know what it’s like to live a life not knowing what a normal life’s like put a label on my head so you know what it’s like not knowing what a normal life’s like look into my eyes so you know what it’s like, look into my eyes so you know what it’s like, look into my eyes so you know what it’s like to live a life not knowing what a normal life’s like.’

‘Once upon a time, there lived a young octopus named Nina and she was very happy. But then, on Monday, the Shark showed up. “Do you want to be my friend? Just let me eat one of your arms,” said the Shark. Nina had never had a friend before, so she donated an arm to her wonderful new friend. Every day that week, Nina and the Shark would play together. And every night, Nina would give him another one of her arms to eat. On Sunday, after playing all day, the Shark told Nina that he was very hungry. “I’ve already given you six of my arms, and now you want one more?” She said.“I don’t want one. This time I want them all. Because that’s what friends are for.” When the shark finished his meal that night, he felt very sad and lonely. He missed Nina very much. So, he swam away to find another friend.’

‘I know the rules: no belts, no razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’

‘Grace, you are a line staff. It’s not your job to interpret tears. That’s what our trained therapists are here for.’
‘Then your trained therapists don’t know shit.’

‘Take the advice you give your kids every fucking five minutes and learn to talk about what’s going on inside your head.’

‘Please don’t be offended if I’m not very friendly, but I’m going to be living with my dad soon, and I don’t really like wasting time on short-term relationships. So, you know, it’s nothing personal.’

9/10

Far North

A lovely but monotonous film starring Jessica Lange. I am not sure why Patricia Arquette’s character was a bit on the crazy side and slutty too, but the film as a whole was satisfactory. There was this one very relatable scene where Jessica’s character talks about her rushing to move out the minute she could and not thinking about coming back home and now realizing it’s nice to have somewhere to come back to and explaining to her sister that there are worse things than raising your child in the house you grew up in.

4.5/10

Starting Over

A Burt Reynolds film you only saw if you’re a huge Burt Reynolds fan or if you were a divorcee starting over in 1979. Jill Clayburgh looked so much like Diana Keaton in this film. The second hal of the film got more romantic comedy like with Burt throwing balls and making her fall into the little basin. Are we supposed to be happy he tried to get back together with his ex-wife or are we supposed to treat it as a betrayal?’ Hight difference and sexual element?’ The storyline wasn’t special but Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen were both nominated for an Academy Award for their roles.

6/10

Hustle

And I thought Starting Over was weak. Without a doubt the worst film of both Burt Reynolds and Catherine Deneuve. I only liked the surprisingly tragic and somewhat random ending. If you cut out the grieving parents, you’d have a really shitty film.

3.5/10

He Said, She Said

Kevin Beacon’s character was a little too shady with not being able to decide whether he does love Elizabeth Perkins’ character enough or not, once saying she loves her and another time that she can’t marry her. I am always shocked that Elizabeth’s career did not start off after this. I am glad she finally got recognition for Weeds, but her 80s/90s films and her character on Weeds are two completely separate things. The film was a bit cheesy at times, but what romantic comedy isn’t.

6/10

Fruitvale Station

A moving biopic about the 2008 New Years Eve tragedy. This films is produced by Forest Whitaker and it stars Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer. Not only was Oscar targeted as a black man, he also had to come across a dumb cop who mistook a gun for a taser. 22 is way too early to go. Thanks to Netflix for showing me this. There’s not much I need to say about this, go watch this especially now with what’s happening yet again.

‘Nooo! Don’t go. I’m scared.’
‘Scared of what?’
‘I hear guns outside.’
‘You know what, baby? Those are just firecrackers. You’ll be safe inside, with your cousin.’
‘But what about you Daddy?’
‘Me? Baby, I’ll be fine.’

‘You shot me. I got a daughter…’

‘I told him to take the train. I didn’t know they were gonna hurt my baby. I should’ve let him drive, but I wanted to keep him safe. You gotta let me hug him. Please, let me hug him. He didn’t like to be alone.’

‘Where’s daddy?’

7/10

Secrets of Eden

John Stamos as a priest, what in the world is this? No one actually suspected the priest, as it was just too obvious, so I was quite invested to see how it all came together. I don’t think I’ve seen any of these actors before other than Uncle Jesse and the Breaking Bad wife. Every once a while there’s a Lifetime film worth watching, and this isn’t it.

4/10

Cyberbully

I liked the other Cyberbully so much more. The 2010 one starring Emily Osment was filmed from the perspective of a victim of bullying and this one is about a bully being bullied. I expected something more jumpy like Unfriended or at least a better threat than a bunch of naked pictures being posted. I didn’t even know people made sites just to laugh at Youtubers for how unprepared they are, I thought It was just mean people commenting stuff on their channels, like since the dawn of the Internet. Honestly I only liked the last scene – not really a spoiler – when she yelled ‘Dad’ and you could hear him running to her. -Spoiler – I hated that we never found out who the person who did this were. Please check out the 2010 Cyberbully, it was wonderful, and skip this mediocrity.

Hi guys, welcome back to liveoffmovies. Fall Season is in its full and I’ve been taking my sweet time not posting my reviews. My bad. I was working two shifts, focusing on an internship, I only yesterday realized, I did not want. Plus I was busy moving to my new house. Now that it’s all mostly done, here are some long overdue reviews. The rest of the episodes (over 30 now!) will be posted later next week, once I do my taxes and figure out how to fill in the new expenses form and buy a washing machine and get everything not working in my new house fixed. Uff listing all of these was tiring enough. Thankfully only half of the shows I watch premiered new episodes this week, and Switched at Birth is already on a break, so I’ll have time to catch up with my posting schedule very soon.

First of, Gilmore Girls is coming back! GG got a revival! First Full House, now Gilmore Girls. Thanks, Netflix. Life is good.

Second of all, The Whispers was cancelled. Now we’ll never know what happened to Claire and the kids.

Thirdly, let’s talk about the new season of AHS and why I’ve decided to quit it. I am a huge horror freak and I have always been, but at the same time I have never been a fan of the vampirism genre. I couldn’t follow Buffy or Charmed, never started True Blood or Vampire Diaries. There are a few vampire films that I have enjoyed, like Nosferatu, The Hunger, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Dracula, 30 Days of Night, or Stake Island, but not enough to explore the genre any further. Furthermore, I am a huge fan of Jessica Lange, and watching the first two episodes of the series, I kept thinking of who her character would be. What we were most scared of, happened. The show got bad without Jessica. The first four seasons were relatable to some extend, season two, even though, my favorite, the least. There are a few shows that I had to talk myself into watching for a couple of episodes, and then, continued watching, because it would be weird to stop. I have tried watching the first episode of the fifth series twice, and that has barely ever happened before. Pilots are supposed to be the intriguing, or even the best episodes. And finally, to quote my father, I have no time for some mediocre fairytale that does not concern me. Which is why, I say goodbye to American Horror Story, at least till next year.

Bones 11.01

I have been disapointed with Bones for the last couple of seasons, probably since season 7, as nothing new ever happened. I am furious that no one is mourning Booth’s brother, because I still remember when season 4 came out and Jared helped save Booth. I remember season 4 too well, as back then the episodes were pretty spectacular, and now they’re all the same. ‘Booth was beaten as a child’ automatically reminded me of Sweets and the episode when he accidentaly showed B&B his back, and Brennan talked about the foster parents who used to lock her up, and now I’m getting nostalgic over, yet again, season 4. Kim Raver guest stars, I’m not sure she’s done anything else than 24 after Teddy left to Germany on Greys.

Please leave me with the bones.
Booth was beaten as a child.
It’s Booth’s brother.
I have more questions than answers which is unusual.
That one is Booth’s.

7/10

Bones 11.02

Very disapointing. Also, Kim Raver’s character did not bring anything to the storyline. Why hire her then?

That’s Jared in there, my brother.
Bones, I’m okay.
This is who you’re geniuenly are.

4/10

Bones 11.03

Who knows what the case was about. Also, gross, I couldn’t eat and I always eat while watchinhg Bones.

Daddy’s looking for uncle Jared.
You aranged a show for me?
How she got in and out of the crib.

3/10

Greys 12.03

Season 12 is not as good as we wished it t be.

Someone invited you to your ex boyfriend’s wedding? So rude.
I can’t have sex with you.
No.
I really do like her, she makes me the not so crazy sister.
What do you think they’re paying her?
Izzie anted to freeze her eggs.

7/10

SVU 17.04

The cases are disastrous this season. Nothing new. Mariska all breathing heavily after walking up those stairs, very relatable.

Also Detective Rollins, I assume you know she’s pregnant.

4/10

SVU 17.03

The only way I could have been more shocked is if they told us Cragen is the father, instead of Declan. Good case, not told as well as we’d expect from this incredible show.

He could have killed you. You survived.
Then he raped the little girl too?

2.5/10

Castle 8.03

Entertaining, and that’s all we need from this type of show. Who knows who killed the guy though?

Hey bro, you know what frat the dead dude was from.
Dude, you look like you’re 40.
Including sending your daughter to a house of drunken fratboys, dressed like a slutty angel.
Beer pong challenge everybody.

7.5/10

Scream Queens 1.03

It was a hilarious episode, nicely surprised. Also, Texas Chainsaw ladies and gents. I absolutely adore all the ED insults. I have a friend who has quit this show saying it’s dumb, and she continues to watch AHS, while I can’t stand it. Scream Queens is light and fun, and it has Jamie Lee Curtis, and surprisingly well written for this kind of show, and I have actually missed it this week. Life is too stressful not to watch a few light shows.

It could be really anything, bulimia…
Especially when she was tweeting, ‘I’m being killed.’
Bitch is not even cute.
Don’t ask me if I wanna go, hoes.
You started freaking out when I said I wanted to sleep with your corpse.
You have that Samantha Ronson thing going on.
Find that tortured gay kid in your life and hold them close tonight.
Welcome to Film Analysis.
Which I consider to be the best film. Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Are we all running from Chainsaws of our past?
What we do with the hurt of that trauma defines who we are.
A uniform she ripped off from an ice cream stand.
The intesity of thh experience of being haunted by a psychopath has really bonded them.
You and I are moving into kappa house for a week.
My father is Charles Manson.
Bitches gather’ound.
Bitches, I would like you to meet Chanel number 6.
Chanel says I can hold her hair back on purge nights.
What’s insane are your tweets to the executive producer of the hit TV show How To Get Away With Murder.
6 months ago you tweeted @ShondaRhimes If Annalise Keating really wanted to get away with murderm she’d find a partner and work as a team.
I need to sleep with a white noise machine on.
Baboon attack.
I’ll set the machine to slasher movie and we’ll leave it at that.
Didn’t you hear the screaming?
No! I mean, yes, I heard screaming, but that’s because the white noise machine was set to slasher movie.

Nashville 4.01

Just like I thought, they couldn’t kill Deacon off.

You may not know it now, but this is the best friend you’re gonna have your whole life.
Push her in front of an upcoming traffic, I don’t care.

Nashville 4.02

Nice to see everyone appreciating Layla’s talent again. I want Jullitte’s old manager to represent her! Just imagine how far she would get with his help. Meanwhile, Will got dropped from Luke’s label for being gay. Do we want him on Highway 65? Yes!

We have a solo gig for you tomorrow night at the Bluebird.
Layla, amazing show, seriously. I was blown away.
I know you have a manager, but should that ever change, I’d like to be your first call.
I’m sorry son, I’m gonna have to drop you from the label.
You’d record my songs yourself?

7/10

Scandal 5.02

Finally something is happening. I absolutely loved the ending. The secret is out.

President is about to get Poped.
For the first time ever, President and his mistress will address the country.
My Casey could make fake photos like that in 15 minutes, she’s very good with computers.
You’ve got an alibi, Huck?
She’s making a statement, fix it.
Mr President, you don’t get to be like anyone else, that’s the job you signed up for.
You leaked these photos.
I get turned on by crime scenes.
Are you the President’s mistress?
Yes.

5.5/10

How to Get Away with Murder 2.02

Femke’s character, reminded me of Shirley Maclaine’s character in The Children’s Hour, I bet it’s gonna be one of my favorite storylines this season. Sadly, they let her go.

You screw up again, you’re gonna be the next dead body in the house.
Please explain the extent of your relationship with Mrs Keating.
If she’d been able to get into Harvard.
If not a tranqualizer.
Researching your next murder?
Let the slut shaming begin.
Always bringing me problems, never solutions.
What I did, it was for you. To take care of you.
I didn’t take care of you. I ruined you.
You needed to be saved from me.
Now go home and don’t kill anyone.
Because a part of me is still in love with you.
I hate how you make me feel, because I can’t have you.
It was good with you. And real. Too real.
But you’re the most beautiful thing that ever happened to me.
I’m not saying marry me. Just think about it.

9.5/10

Downton Abbey 7.03

Everyone continues to stress about their job.

I know what a catalogue is.
Typical, 30 years of serving, one wrong move and snap, you’re out on your ear.
I can’t see the future, but then I suppose none of us can.

8/10

Scream Queens 1.04

She’s not dead. She’s haunting the campus with her fatness.
Now Zedae will win because we live in the age of Obama?
When I find a gravestone I like I get turned on and rub one out to it.
Hey, that’s my sister and she’s not a bitch. But I am.
Also not a student.
Zeade should have considered the fact that she was gonna get kidnapped.

5.5/10

Scream Queens 1.05

The Shining and The Silence of the lambs references.

Give me the exact replica of the maze from The Shining.
Apparently, one of them died or something.
Excuse me, it’s not my fault that some old guy died in the 70s.
Excuse me, than who’s fault is it?
My husband was shot in Dallas, you idiot.
Or the human mattress Nancy Reagan.
Dibbs. I’m Nancy Reagan.
You’re a weird psycho lunatic who’s gonna end up in an asylum somewhere staring at the wall.
All smartphones have GPS in the evern when they’re dead.

8/10

Grandfathered 1.02

Grandfathered got a full season and well deserved too. I gave this episode a 10, but now I don’t really see why, oh well.

You were driving and you stopped to write that down?
Let’s sit by the garbage. By the garbage!
Yeah I got it.
So you take a lot of pictures of yourself.
Thank you, it’s se;f expression, gives me a way to be artistic.
I’m gonna make instructional male up videos on youtube.
You follow her?
Since the day I met her. Sounds creepy, I’m fine with that.
Jimmy get in here, I need man to sit on.

10/10

How To Get Away With Murder 2.03

Femke is gone and we’re back to the usual boredom. I couldn’t care less about the siblings this whole season is based around.

What does sex have to do with criminal law?
Everything.
Sexual healing.
Move, find me a pervert.

2/10

Faking It 2.17

This season is ridiculous. Why am I still watching this show? Good thing it’s only 20 minutes.

When did you become such a Pretty Little Liar?
You’re a woman and you’re a gay man, let’s hear you roar.
The bi label is just a step in the coming out process.
Drunken hookup. Curious. Bi. Full blown gay. Elton John.

1.5/10

Faking It 2.18

How come this is the end of their junior year and they’re all so sexually experienced? Even in 90210 there were some virgins junior year.

What is she doing?
No clue.
Don’t do this.
Or what?

These are some of the films I’ve seen last year but never got around to reviewing them. I will have a lot more time to review films these next three weeks. I will post every day.

The Help

Don’t we just love these Far From Heaven types of stories of  kindness and change? The Help is a beautiful film, featuring an unbelievably fragile and moving performance by Jessica Chastain, my favorite role of hers even after the Oscar winning Zero Dark Thirty. One of my absolute favorite films of 2011.

I hope you write something good. Something you believe in.

You is kind. You is smart. You is important.

Eat my shit.

I may have trouble remembering my own name, or what country I live in, but there are two things I can’t seem to forget: that my own daughter threw me into a nursing home, and that she ate Minny’s shit.

Every day you’re not dead in the ground, when you wake up in the morning, you’re gonna have to make some decisions. Got to ask yourself this question: “Am I gonna believe all them bad things them fools say about me today?” You hear me? “Am I gonna believe all them bad things them fools say about me today? You hear me today?” All right? As for your mama, she didn’t pick her life. It picked her. But you, you’re gonna do something big with yours. You wait and see.

You know Hilly, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’ve been eating too much *pie*.

Maybe we should just build you a bathroom outside, Hilly.

We done been over this, Miss Celia. You’re supposed to eat in the dining room, that’s how it works. Here, let me take your plate back.
I’m fine right here, Minny.

I specifically said, “Drop old *coats* at my house”, not *commodes*!

Miss Leefolt got so much hairspray on her head, she gonna blow us all up if she light a cigarette.

You have a job here for the rest of your life. If you want it.

Isn’t that what all you girls from Ole Miss major in – professional husband hunting?

God says we need to love our enemies. It hard to do. But it can start by telling the truth. No one had ever asked me what it feel like to be me. Once I told the truth about that, I felt free. And I got to thinking about all the people I know. And the things I seen and done. My boy Trelaw always said we gonna have a writer in the family one day. I guess it’s gonna be me.

10/10

Everybody’s All American

What an underrated title. If only life was this easy and having a relationship and being a stayed at home mom and wife was enough for women of the 21st century. Jessica Lange portrays an All-American girl oh so perfectly.

8/10

The Babadook

Falsely advertised as a horror film, is in fact a breathtaking psychological drama. If you’re familiar with current Aussie films and tv series, you recognise Essie Davis, who proves what we already know, what a marvellously compelling actress she is. It’s one of those films you wish you could relive again. I have already recommended it to everyone I know, as it’s a awe-inspiring experience.

If it’s in a word. Or it’s in a look. You can’t get rid of The Babadook.

10/10

Take Shelter

A beautiful story that does not come around so often, beautiful scenery too.

I still take off my boots not to wake her.
I still whisper.

8/10

Night and the City

I haven’t seen the 1950’s version, so I cannot assess the plot, but despite Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange starring in it, it was not my kind of movie.

6/10

The Guilt Trip

There were a few fun scenes, especially the one when Barbara Streisand’s character tells her son to never take a hitchhiker as they may rape them. But the bloopers were funnier than the whole movie. I wish Barbara made more films these days, I’m okay even if all of them are comedies.

Now drink your fucking water before you drop dead from dehydration.

Promise me you’ll never pick up a hitchhiker.
I promise.
Good. They rape.

4.5/10

Before I Go to Sleep

Sadly, very disapointed with this one. Nicole’s bloodshot eyes are a special artribute of this film and it’s secret weapon.

5/10

If I Stay

I have to admitt, I only watched it for Mireille Enos, but it turned out to be slightly better than I expected. I haven’t read the book, so It was surprising to see how many people died in that accident, as I expected it to be more teen based and family friendly.

Life is this big fat gigantic stinking  mess, but that’s the beauty of it too.

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.

4.5/10

As Above, So Below

The main character is us unlikable as it gets, but the film itself meets all the horror requirements, not quite as well as The Pyramid does, but similar.

6/10

Snakes on a Plane

What’s with the big hate against this one? Wasn’t it fun when everyone got bitten? People who don’t like horror shouldn’t watch horrors, not complain about them. It was FUN, that’s what matters.

4/10

Ouija

What a misunderstanding. And there’s gonna be a second part. And Annalise Basso, the little girl from Oculus and Stand Up is gonna play the lead.

3/10

Horrible Bosses

Oversexed and not that funny. No one will ever convince me to see the sequel.

2/10

The Turning

Some stories better than others, easily forgotten as a whole.

6.5/10

Into the Storm

Suprisingly barable. A must for everyone who loves cathastophic genre.

4.5/10

Stage Fright

An absoute misunderstaning, one of the worst films I’ve seen.

0.5/10

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started as weekly reviews on movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, partially thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd, and partially because of my demanding day job.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

At the pictures 10 times a month. I rate films within genre. I watch all interesting titles about to expire on Netflix and HBO Go. I’m nostalgic and reminisce a lot. Over the years I’ve seen 140 TV Shows.

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

favourite film and tv quotes

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘I used to think about
your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I  knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’ (Disobedience)

‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’ (The Aviator)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’
‘No, actually you do. Your mother quit your father. Your father quit you. You quit your boyfriend and if I read your hospital chart correctly you quit your life momentarily on a couple of occasions. You quit. It’s what you know how to do.’ (Greys)

‘Where the hell was I that year?’
‘Your were watching television’. (Everybody Loves Raymond)

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’
(Short Term 12)

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’ (Disobedience)

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a moment when our lives change forever. The moment we admit our weaknesses, the moment we rise to a challenge, the moment we accept a sacrifice, or let a loved one go. And sometimes the change in our lives is an answer to our prayers.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘Don’t wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don’t. In face of what we can lose in a day, in an instant, wonder what the hell it is that make us hold it together.’  (Greys)

‘Bree sobbed quietly in the restroom for five miutes, but her husband never knew, because when Bree finally emerged, she was perfect.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘I am not food, you cannot just eat and eat.’ (The Favourite)

‘I don’t love him.’
‘Of course you do.’
‘No!’
‘Don’t take me for a fool Olive,  I’m many things but I’m not a fool.’
‘I know that, you’re brilliant.’
‘Don’t you see, it’s over. Whatever this is, was, it’s over.’
‘I love You.’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing, is reason enough to celebrate.’ (Greys)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘What happened last year when you fell in the water?’
‘I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?’
‘You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ammunition.’
‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’
‘When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.’
‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

‘Dr, I have been this way since…since I can remember. There is no cure.’ (American Horror Story)

‘He was so crazy about me, I couldn’t breathe. So we tried drinking our way back into love, but it never made sense in the morning. So I ran. And every time I came back, he was here. And he was still crazy about me.’ (My Blueberry Nights)

‘Bree van de Kamp had always wanted to live her life with elegance and grace. That is also how she wanted to die. Her plan was to pour herself a glass of her favorite chardonnay, put on her most stylish nightgown and leave behind a note on embossed stationery.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘All we have is this moment. The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid being alive today. So be… here…. now.’ (Six Feet Under)

‘On the train coming here, we were in the same cart, I saw you, you were reading and you feel asleep. I didn’t dare to look at you, you were so beautiful, it was scary. Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a time when we must expose our weaknesses. When our secrets can no longer remain private, when our solitude can no longer be denied, when our pain can no longer be ignored, but sometimes we feel so alone that a weakness we thought we’d overcome suddenly becomes too strong to fight.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’
‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
‘Okay, but what about you?’
‘That is me. And you? Are you happy?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Have you been with other women?’
‘No. Not really. And you?’
‘No.’
‘But, Esti… Do you still
only fancy women?’ (Disobedience)

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’ (Thelma & Louise)

‘She let me live at Nora’s house. She let me believe that I was a part of their family. I fell in love with that family. What am I supposed to do, just sit there, pretend I’m related to them? I was happy. For the first time in my life I was happy.’ (Brothers and Sisters)

‘You will be left all alone with your bitterness and your rage and your knowledge that you loved her and she loved you and you threw it away for them.’
‘Do you love her?’
‘Yes.’
‘And Have you always?’
‘Yes.’
‘So then ask her.’
‘Olive, will you forgive me?’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘No razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’
(Short Term 12)

‘You can’t take a picture of this. It’s already gone.’ (Six Feet Under)
