Punchline

I just love this film so much! It’s my 8th or 10th watch and it never gets old! Sally and Tom are fantastic as stand-up comedians. Sally plays a housewife married to a Polish man and is a beginner comedian. She spends 500 dollars on poor jokes, and enlists Tom Hanks’s help to reinvent her act. Tom falls for her, even though she’s happily married and has no feelings for him. Sally’s husband doesn’t think she’s funny anymore and doesn’t like her evening trips to the comedy club. There’s a stand-up contest both Sally and Tom take part in. Sally’s husband sees her perform for the first time, and not only finds her funny, but is proud of her. Sally wins, but gives her prize and title up as she realises she doesn’t need it, because she already has everything she needs, and because she thinks Tom is funnier and should have won. Tom does win, and Sally leaves with her husband, discussing all the jokes she’s going to tell at next stand-up night.

Blackfish

I’ve been a vegan for 10 years and vegetarian for more than I can remember, so it’s true that I’m not a fan of most zoos and some of their practices. I do however have friends who’ve worked at zoos and they’ve explained to me on numerous occasions the importance zoos have in animal conservation. I like zoos that rescue animals, and only keep the ones that cannot be released back into the wild. I accept zoos that have fancy, big animal enclosures, but most don’t. Dolphin and whale shows along with artificial animal insemination are things I’ll never understand and want no part in, so even though I may visit my friends at a zoo, and feed and hug a koala or two, I’ll never set foot in Sea World. Apparently author John Green decided to scrap a scene from Paper Towns’s film adaptation after seeing this film, wheras Colin Trevorov, director of Jurassic World, based raptors’ responses on Tilikum’s behaviour in captivity. I only watched Blackfish 3 days ago, but it was all I could think about, so I watched it again.

8.5/10

The Man in the Moon

I forgot how beautiful this film was! Little Reese steals every scene she’s in! It’s a wonderful coming of age story of 14 year old Dani and her first crush. The crush likes her, but doesn’t want to be with her because of her young age. Her older sister falls for the same guy, who just happens to be 17, just like her. A tragedy strikes, changing their lives forever.

Wedding March 4

Watching Hallmark films with my family means one thing, it’s Easter time! After the 3rd one, I could feel my brain melt, thankfully this was my second one and I managed to watch this before that happened. I haven’t seen the other 4 films from this series but I’m familiar with Jack Wagner and Josie Bissett from When Calls the Heart and Melrose Place. This was okay, and I think I will eventually watch the other 4 of them. I couldn’t concentrate on the film after they mentioned pistachio cake. I know what I’ll be getting myself for birthday this year.

6/10

Easter Under Wraps

Hallmark has 20+ Spring rom-coms, but only one Easter film? I’ve only watched this because it was on HBO Go and I was looking for rom-coms to watch with my family over the Easter break. The film centered around a chocolate factory and, according to my mom, starred ‘Kevin’ from Chesapeake Shores.

Thelma & Louise

Every time I watch Thelma & Louise I think of how much fun these two would have in prison. I can see them forming a gang and bossing everyone around. When I was a teenager, I suffered from depression and I was infatuated with thoughts of suicide and truly contemplated it, which is why this film means so much to me. I love the ending so much even though it leaves me depressed for days every time, but it’s a shame they didn’t get to enjoy more of their time together.

‘You let her go, you fuckin’ asshole, or I’m gonna splatter your ugly face all over this nice car!’

‘Looks like you got a real fucked-up idea of fun. In the future, when a woman’s crying like that, she isn’t having any fun!’

‘You be sweet to ’em, especially your wife. My husband wasn’t sweet to me. Look how I turned out.’

‘I think I fucked up. I think I got us in a situation where we both could get killed. Damn, I don’t know why I just didn’t go to the police right away.’
‘You know why. You already said.’
‘What’d I say again?’
‘Nobody’d believe us. We’d still get in trouble, we’d still have our lives ruined. You know what else?’
‘What?’
‘That guy was hurting me. If you hadn’t come out when you did, he would’ve hurt me a lot worse. And probably nothing would’ve happened to him ’cause everybody did see me dancin’ with him all night. They would’ve made out like I’d asked for it. My life would’ve been ruined a whole lot worse than it is now. At least now I’m havin’ some fun. And I’m not sorry that son of a bitch is dead. I’m just sorry it was you that did it and not me.’

‘Well, you get what you settle for.’

‘You’ve always been crazy. This is just the first chance you’ve ever had to really express yourself.’

‘Well, we’re not in the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here.’

‘I don’t remember ever feeling this awake.’

‘Louise, no matter what happens, I’m glad I came with you.’

‘Louise, shoot the radio.’
‘Right.’
‘The Police radio, Louise!’

‘Now, I swear three days ago neither one of us would’ve ever pulled a stunt like this, but if you was ever to meet my husband, you’d understand why.’

‘You said you ‘n’ me was gonna get out of town and for once just really let our hair down. Well, darlin’, look out, ’cause my hair is comin’ down!’

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’

Eagle Eye

I’ve worked for the mail before and though I’ve only visited the warehouse a few times during my year there, after watching Eagle Eye, I wish I had taken a ride down the parcel sorting machine, it sure looks fun! Never even crossed my mind this was possible and I probably would have broken my neck falling down the chute, but this is honestly the only scene worth seeing. Also, Julianne Moore lends her voice to a robot and doesn’t really sound like herself as a result, which is a bummer since I’ve only watched this film because of her.

4/10

Red Nose Day Actually

I’ve had this on my DVR for 3 years and finally watched it today, only to realise Laura Linney isn’t in the UK version! I had to watch it online and Laura’s character is now married to, and has kids with Patrick Dempsey?!

6/10

Shoulder Arms

Finally, a Chaplin short where Charlie doesn’t fight with men over random women he met in the park.

4/10

Traffik

Missi Pyle really missed out on playing a likeable character for once.

Film Reviews: The Hunt. The Circle. Doing Time for Patsy Cline. The Property Man

I have officially finished my Miranda Otto marathon, it took me 3 weeks or so. The only three films of hers I still haven’t seen are True Love and Chaos, also starring Naveen Andrews, Kin, starring Isiah Washington and Three Legged Fox. I just cannot find them anywhere. I hope I won’t need to reschedule my April flight for August, but if I do, I’ll still take time off and just spend the two weeks at home watching films. Here are some quick notes I wrote down while watching the below four films.

the hunt the circle patsy theprop

The Hunt

A brilliant thriller from the producers of The Purge. It’s the film I’ve been talking about for the last 8 month, and every person I mention the plot to says, oh so it’s like The Purge. In a way, it is. 12 people are kidnapped and left in the woods. People are hunting them down. Theyre given guns, but they have no chance. The films stars Hilary Swank as the villain and then from the huntees, you’ll probably only recognise 3 people (inlcuding Emma Roberts and Justin Hartley from This is Us). Those three people don’t live long in this movie. There’s one scene in this that is stopping me from giving it a 10 and it involves an eye and a high heel. I still cannot believe The Hunt’s US release was cancelled or postponed because of Trump.

9/10

The Circle

This is like that Black Mirror episode starring Bryce Dallas Howard where people can rate human interractions. Have they never heard of the Data Protection Act, now superseded by the General Data Protection Regulation? Why on Earth would anyone agree to this? And why did Tom Hanks agree to do this awful film? Watch ‘The Circle’ starring Julie Benz instead.

3/10

Doing time for Patsy Cline

A young musician decides to leave Australia and head for Nashville, but hitchhikes with the wrong couple. He falls for the female, played by Miranda Otto, and police arrest him for drug possesion. He decides to sacrifice his freedom, because he’s conviced the girl will fall in love with him. In his mind he plays this alternate universe in which him and Patsy become these big country music stars and fall in love. His maladaptive dreaming eventually ruins his life, as his love for the girl overtakes his clear judgement. I too have always lived in my head. For me, I think, It comes with being an only child. Constant maladaptive daydreaming though pleasant and reassuring, is dangerous. It’s affected my life, but It’s also saved it. It’s made me into this creative individual and is major source of ongoing writing material. I saw someone on instagram tell Miranda she looks like Susan Sarandon, it must have been the poster for this film that made them think that, because they look nothing like.

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’

7/10

The Property Man

This is my 20th Chaplin short and they’re all the same to me now. I think I’ll just stick to his feature films from now on.

I  finished another film diary, and what I’m planning on doing now is brining my home printer downstairs to the living room, so I can print little posters of films I watch and stick them in there, because let’s be honest, I spend most of my time off in front of TV. For the last two weeks I’ve been having a massive Miranda Otto marathon, which is making me miss Australia, a lot.

reaching for the moon reacchh

Reaching For The Moon

A flawless film portraying how pure, fragile and problematic love truly is. I loved Elizabeth’s relationship with alcohol, almost as much as I loved her relationship with Lota. This couldn’t last because Elizabeth made it clear she didn’t want to live in Brasil, while Lota had everything she wanted in Brasil. There was certain disdain in Cookie’s voice when she talked about living in Brasil. Even though Elizabeth knew her college friend was in a relationship with this woman, she raised her chin for the woman to kiss her again. The ending reminded me of The Favourite, with how the 3rd woman kept the two main characters apart by destroying letters one sent to another, single handily ruining their lives. Get yourself a lesbian girlfriend who will wash your hair every night.

reachinn

‘How are your parents?’
‘We don’t speak.’
‘What happened?’
‘I live with a woman.’

‘How close were you in college?’
‘We were both very busy pretending not to be who we were while being attracted to each other for what we thought the other might be. No, we didn’t, but we were close.’

‘There was this boy who was crazy for her. I don’t know what she did to him, but he sent her a postcard saying ‘Go to hell, Elizabeth’ and then he killed himself.’

‘I hear one of my poems and I’m mortified.’
‘Yes, I guess this is why you should never meet authors.’

‘A kiss and wake up situation.’
‘Something like that, but without the kiss.’

‘Still want to kiss me?’

‘To everything in life that may seem improbable, but is not impossible.’

‘I want you to stay.’

‘We are great friends, we love each other, but basically, we’re roommates.’
‘Does Mary know you’re roommates?’
‘Of course she does. Maybe she doesn’t want to admit it.’

‘So, I’m leaving. I’m going back home until you can figure this out.’
‘Mary, this is your home.’
‘Then send her away.’
‘I can’t.’
‘You don’t know her. She screws everything up. She was like that in college.’
‘Let’s adopt a baby.’
‘You’ll buy me a baby, so you can have an affair with another woman?’

‘I should warn you. Unless I’m rather drunk, I’m very shy.‘

‘I have no other option than to love you.’

‘It’s okay I’m not drunk, I’m just crying in English.’

‘I already have a commitment to pessimism. Pessimist is never disappointed.’

‘I don’t drink because things go wrong. I want to drink every minute of every day. Things going wrong just gives me the excuse I’ve been looking for.’
‘But why?’
‘Because if I don’t have what I want, I’m lonely and sad. And if I do have what I want, I’m sure I’m gonna lose it. And the waiting is unbearable.‘

10/10

bombshell dance the jackb

Bombshell

I couldn’t stop comparing it to The Loudest Voice. Best friends Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts ended up playing the same character this year, Gretchen Carlson. Bombshell focused more on Megyn’s story, whereas Showtime’s mini series on Gretchen’s. Mark Duplass, who was recently seen in Apple’s The Morning Show, also heavily based on this scandal, here stars as Megyn Kelly’s husband. 15 years ago Charlize Theron starred in a brilliant film about sexual harassment at work called North Country. I recommend you watch North Country and The Loudest Voice and skip this one.

5/10

Dance Academy: The Movie

I’ve seen a few episodes of Dance Academy here and there back when I lived in Australia, but never really got into it. The film version shows the hardships that come with auditioning. I found it oddly satisfying how they haven’t befriended any new people since leaving the academy. Maybe school friendships last despite what everyone says? I certainly hope so.

7/10

The Jack Bull

Miranda Otto goes into the town to convince people to give her what her family needs, because as she claims, she’s better at politics than her husband. Red flags light up in my head, ‘oh sweetie, don’t, you’re gonna get yourself raped.’ What happens you may ask? Not only doesn’t she fix anything, she dies in the most absurd way.

7/10

king lear like a boss dark waters what

King Lear

They really did a poor job modernising this Shakespearean play. The only good thing about this film is that one third of it was shot at the gorgeous Hatfield House.

3/10

Like a Boss

This was fun and I would recognise Lisa Kudrow’s voice straight away.

5/10

Dark  Waters

Before they mentioned teflon, it was just like that John Travolta film ‘A Civil Action’, and then it got real. If you’re reading this, get rid of all your teflon kitchenware. Then again, It’s already too late.

8/10

What Did Jack Do?

I’ll watch anything David Lynch has and will ever make and Netflix decided to buy this little short of his. I liked Rabbits, another short of David’s starring Naomi Watts more. Why do the monkey and David talk like they’re in the Black Lodge?

Jojo Rabbit

It’s a story of a 10 year old boy, of Hitler youth who, just like his classmates, buys into the Nazi propaganda. He is wounded while training to be a soldier which keeps him from joining Hitler’s army. Jojo, suddenly having a lot of time on his hands, finds out his mother’s greatest secret. A teenage Jewish girl, hiding in the attic. Thomasin McKenzie goes from hiding in the woods in ‘Leave No Trace’ to hiding in Scarlett Johansson’s attic. The first half of the film is intentionally offensive and may be sickening to some, but please try to look past it. At my screening, a few people in the audience were outraged, sighed at the sight of Hitler and one shouted ‘I thought this was a family film!’, but please give it a chance.

‘You’re not a Nazi, Jojo. You’re a ten-year-old kid who likes dressing up in a funny uniform and wants to be part of a club.’

8/10

The Irishman

Can’t believe no one wanted to buy it and they told Scorsese no one would watch ‘another gangster film’ of his in 2019, and only Neflix offered to buy it? The film turned out to be another Scorsese masterpiece. De Niro’s contacts are a little distracting, but I can look past that, because it’s one of the best films of the year. I keep asking people in my surroundings whether they’ve seen it and most don’t even know haven’t even heard of the film. They don’t really care for films or Scorsese for some reason? Both break my heart. Even though DeNiro doesn’t seem to be at his best, Al Pacino certainly is. I was pleased to see Ray Romano star in this too, he doesn’t act enough anymore. Some of my favourite scenes are the ones where Robert de Niro ‘paints the walls’.

9/10

Cats

I’ve chatted with this 70 year old lady after the screening and she said she had seen a few stage productions of Cats and she liked this one best because the story was much clearer as opposed to just cats singing. We’ve had a bunch of pre-teen girls laughing through the entire thing, even during Jennifer Hudson’s performace of the famous song. 20 minutes in, one of the girls shouted ‘Wait! It’s a musical?!’ They only shut up when Jennifer got off the ground and began to hit all those high notes that left the entire audience with goosebumps. Don’t forget to bow to your cat when you address them tonight. This is a good example of the trailer being better than the film itself. I teared up when the main character said ‘Are you going to try for a different life?’ Taylor Swift doesn’t perform the beautiful song she co-wrote with Cats creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, it’s experienced and accomplished ballerina and acting newcomer Francesca Hayward who sings it in the film. Taylor performs ‘Macavity’ about the film villain played by Idris Elba.

3/10

Burn Burn Burn

A story of two friends who embark on a ‘Thelma and Louise’- like journey around the UK, a last wish their deceased best mate had. One of the friends is desperate to get out of a loveless relationship and the other’s girlfriend cheats on her. They travel around England spreading their mate’s ashes and then encounter an elderly hitchhiker running from an abusive husband. They feel there’s something is wrong and offer to take her all the way to her son in Scotland. They can see the lady is scared of someone, but it isn’t until later on when she reveals the husband was going to kill her. The film stars Downton Abbey’s Laura Carmichael.

Katie Says Goodbye

A story of a young adult from a small town in the middle of nowhere, who dreams of moving to San Francisco. She works at a diner, while her unreliable mother sits at home, drinks and goes out with men. On her lunch breaks, Katie, played by Bates Motel’s Olivia Cooke, has sex with men stopping by the dinner. She makes a steady income from it, collecting only $11 dollars from her regulars. She finds a boyfriend, and doesn’t tell him what she does, when he finally, he stays with her at first but treats her badly. She refuses to sleep with two locals, but they don’t take no for an answer. I really wish they went into why she thought selling her body was a good way to earn money and showed us how she came up with this idea. Was sex with random people just another everyday activity to her? Was she abused by one of her mother’s boyfriends? She had a stable job, the owner seemed understanding, she surely could have asked for extra hours. Mireille Enos has a very little supporting role here, they really should have given her more to do. I like the simplistic scenography and costumes, most of the scenes were shot in the desert while Olivia Cooke is wearing the exact same clothes, her waitress uniform, in every scene. I am personaly familiar with a loved one taking all your money, so this twist, however predictable, was something I related to.

judy knives out after the wedding

Judy

A tragic story of the ‘Wizard of Oz’ star. The portrayal of Judy’s eating disorder is what I’ve found the most disturbing. According to the film, Judy’s diet consisted of alcohol, cigarettes, amphetamine-based appetite suppressants and sleeping pills. The last two since before her Dorothy days. Teenage Judy, played by young actress Darci Shaw, complaints about being overworked, being forced to starve herself, not having a normal life and having to work up to 18h a day. There’s even a snippet of an example of sexual harassment she endured working for MGM, director Rupert Goold shows the audience a suggestive scene of Louis B. Mayer caressing 16 year old Garland’s chest. There are scenes from Judy’s personal life, interactions with children, including Liza Minelli, and Judy’s life post divorcing her 4th husband. Judy’s poor diet and medication addiction eventually lead to her early death by overdose at 47, 6 months after the events of this film. You cannot deny Zellweger’s talent as she sings Garland’s famous songs and simply shines in this biopic. I wish Goold mentioned Judy’s relationship with her older sisters and focused on Garland’s 20+ suicide attempts. While I think you should watch ‘Judy’, I’m certain Showtime’s upcoming ‘Sid & Judy’ documentary will be even better.

‘I just want what everybody wants. I seem to have a harder time getting it.’

7/10

Knives Out

A family gathers for their patriarch’s 85th birthday. The family wake up the day after to find someone has died. A private detective doesn’t believe the death to be suicide and as the trailer hints, ‘suspects foul play’. It’s a comedy and mystery in one and it stars Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Colette and it’s simply one of the best films of 2019. I doubt you’ll figure this one out in the first half, but give it a go, it really is worth the hype.

‘I suspect foul play. I have eliminated no suspects.’

10/10

After the Wedding

A manager of an orphanage in India is forced to visit the US to look for a benefactor for the orphanage she works in. To her surprise, the benefactor’s husband and her share history. There are a few big twists and you may not be ready for all of them. It’s my favourite film from Bart Freundlich so far. It has amazing performances from Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. I desperately need to see the original this was based on.

10/10

ford parasite docs

Le Mans ’66 aka Ford v Ferrari

A tragic true story of race car driver Ken Miles. You’ll love it even if you’re not into cars. Christian Bale is fantastic in it and will surely fight with Phoenix over that Oscar. I wasn’t expecting the tragic ending, because I clearly don’t know enough about cars.

9/10

Parasite

A family lies to get work and the way they do it is brilliant. This film is a comment on class hierarchy as lower and upper class clash. Parasite truly is a masterpiece and this year’s best film. I keep recommeding this film to everyone I know. My school friends already knew about this film, one of them as it turns out has seen it before me and loved it and another one really wants to see it. Sadly most of people I see every day weren’t interested, I lost them at ‘South Korean’ or ‘foreign’, which just shows, sadly I am not were I should be in my life. It’s also the 600th new film I watched this year, and as I type this, I have now seen 660 films.

10/10

Doctor Sleep

Stanley Kubrick would be satisfied, if not proud. For years The Shining used to be my favourite film, so the third act felt like coming home.

‘The world’s a hungry place. A dark place. I’ve only met two or three people like us. They died. When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don’t know about magic. I, I always called it ‘the shining’.’

9/10

at eter abomi maleficent 22

At Eternity’s Gate

Oil painting was my favourite medium in my advanced Visual Arts class in high school and one of the very few I was quite good at. I haven’t painted in years and I miss it greatly. I still draw though. I really hope one day I’ll stop being lazy, take out one of my easels and turpentine and get back to it, because I really miss the person I was back then. The film could have used a faster pace, but Willem Dafoe is superb as Vincent van Gogh. If you’re an artist, this is a must see. If you can relate to any of the quotes below, watch it.

‘Maybe God made me a painter for people who aren’t born yet. It is said, Life is for sowing. The harvest is not here.’

‘Are all the painters crazy?’
‘Maybe just the good ones.’

‘I can make people feel what it’s like to be alive.’

‘There’s a lot of destruction and failure at the door of a successful picture. I find joy in sorrow. And sorrow is greater than laughter. You know, an angel is not far from those who are sad, and illness can sometimes heal us’

‘I’d like to find a new light for paintings that we haven’t yet seen.’

‘Without painting, I can’t live’

‘But these flowers will wither and fade. All flowers do.’
‘I know. Everybody knows that.’
‘But mine will resist.’
‘Are you sure?’
‘At least they’ll have a chance.’

‘What do you paint’
‘Sunlight.’

‘I’ve spent all my life alone, in a room. I need to go out and work to forget myself. I want to be out of control. I need to be in a feverish state. It’s called the act of painting for a reason.’

‘I paint, as a matter of fact, to stop thinking. I stop thinking, and I feel that I’m a part of everything outside and inside of me.’

‘I wanted so much to share what I see. Now I just think about my relationship to eternity.’

‘I am my paintings. ‘

‘Sometimes they say I’m mad, but a grain of madness is the best of art.’

‘I paint with my qualities and faults.’

‘Paintings have to be done in one clear gesture. Paintings have to be painted fast. The painters I like all paint fast in one clear gesture, each stroke. You’ve heard of a stroke of genius? Well, that’s what it means.’

‘If I couldn’t paint, I would murder someone.

‘Because painted reality is its own reality.

‘Maybe what you are saying is that your gift to the world is painting.’
‘If not, what good is an artist?’

‘Why do you say you are a painter?’
‘Because I paint. I love painting. I have to paint. Always been a painter, that I know of.’

‘I don’t want to hurt your feelings, but don’t you see that this painting is, how can I say, unpleasant? Ugly?’
‘Why would God give me a gift to paint ugly and disturbing things?’

Abominable

This year we’ve had Smallfoot, Missing Link and now Abomidable. What is it with 2019 and all the Yetis? Sadly I liked the previous two more, because they were as realistic as a Big Foot film for children can be, and I really didn’t buy into the Yeti magic here.

Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil

Usually I’m disappointed with 3D effects, but not here! I know that Angelina has semi-retired from acting and she’s been directing meaningful films that I love, but I really wish she still acted regularly on the side.

‘There are many who prey on the innocent. I’m sure your kind would agree.’
‘If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were making a threat.’
‘Well, do you?’
‘Do I?’
‘Know better?’

Countdown

Back in 2007 there was this website that would tell you when you’ll die and everyone in my school was obsessed with it. The app could easily be manipulated, you changed your weight and added yourself a couple of years. 12 years later someone stole this idea, modernised it by changing the website into an app and made it into an average horror. The highlight of my viewing experience was when this 20 year old two seats from me shouted ‘That’s Axl from The Middle’ when Charlie McDermott showed up.

5/10

The Addams Family

This would have been so much better in the hands of Tim Burton. The animated Addams Family is nowhere need as good as the TV show or the films starring Angelica Huston and Christina Ricci. It was so average I fell asleep. I felt like all it was about was the Addams’s extended family coming to the multiple parties they seemed to keep having.

5/10

Mrs Lowry and Son

Acting is not everything. Mrs Lowry & Son, filmed mostly in one room, feels more like a play, not a feature film. Timothy Spall is outstanding in it though.

Disturbing diss at Polish immigrants in Paul Feig’s “Last Christmas”

You may want to go to see Paul Feig’s “Last Christmas” this winter season. This is why you shouldn’t.

emmathom

I’ve read somewhere while back a review where someone said Emma Thompson is either one of our national treasures or the most annoying person in the world. She’s a great actress and a good writer, and I’ve written many positive reviews of her films on here, but I guess I was never really a fan of hers? In “Last Christmas” a rom-com drama Thompson co-wrote with her husband, actor and writer Greg Wise, there is an anti-Brexit subplot. Early in the film we meet the main character’s immigrant parents, her mother especially appears to be scared of Brexit. Throughout the film Thompson and Wise comment on xenophobia and Brexit. There’s a scene where Emma Thompson’s character is afraid she’ll be asked to leave and a scene on the bus were a couple is yelled at for speaking their native language. Over an hour in, when comforted by her daughter, played by Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson’s character says ‘I blame the Poles’. You can’t make this whole anti xenophobic/brexit plot and then do the opposite by putting the blame on one of the European communities. You cannot make these sort of generalisations about a community. Polish people are only one of the many immigrant communities that work hard, physical jobs in factories and warehouses 12 hours a day for minimum wage. Among Polish immigrants, you’ll find many well educated people who speak and write English on an advanced level and earn well over 25k pounds a year. With this remark Emma Thompson and Greg Wise offended European immigrants of all backgrounds, not just Polish. If not for the disturbing diss, my review would have had something about being a dual citizen and how angry Brexit has made me feel and then something about how unsafe my 60 year old parents have felt since the referendum and how relatable this film was. The writers also made a diss at the LGBTQ community. Emma Thompson’s character calls a dessert a gay character made ‘a lesbian pudding’. Sadly the disses at the Polish and lesbian communities changed all the good the film did in the first hour and I’m forced to give it a 4 star rating.

Film Reviews: Downton Abbey. Apollo 11. The Shape of Things. Finding Normal

Downton Abbey

Our favourite family and their staff are back after 4 years! This feature film was just as delightful as the series! I really hope they come back in a few years to show us what happened to Downton and the characters during WWII and then, even later, because I really want to see Mary as the grumpy old aunt. And yes, I got an A1 poster with all characters from my local cinema! I can’t wait to buy it on DVD and show it to my family! Someone asked me the other day what it is about Downton that is so good and no matter how many nice things I had to say it just doesn’t explain it well enough. A friend or two of mine watched Downton for a season or two and then abandoned it. I started watching Downton back in season 4, right after I read online about Anna’s rape storyline. I started from the pilot and after two or three episodes I was hooked on the lives of the Crawleys and Downton’s staff. Cora played by Elizabeth McGovern and Anna played by Joanne Froggatt are my favourite characters on the show, but honestly, everyone is highly likeable, even Mary. I still haven’t been to the Highclere castle, but it’s definitely on my to do list. The king and queen’s visit seemed a little far fetched to me though, and that’s honestly the only problem one may have with this film.

‘Will you have enough clichés to get you through the visit?’
‘If not, I’ll come to you.’

‘Oh Violet. After all these years you still astonish me.’
‘Oh good, I’m glad I’m a revelation and not a disappointment.’

‘You are the future of Downton’

10/10

Apollo 11

A riveting documentary made out of 11 000 hours of unused footage and never-heard-before audio recordings of Neil Armstrong’s trip to the moon. I especially liked shots of the public waiting for the launch. Just think about it, these people, some of them long gone, will never learn about this film, and those still with us, won’t probably know about this documentary. I’m glad I got to see it on the big screen, this is why I love Odeon’s Silver Screen.

‘One small step for man… one giant leap for mankind.’

The Shape of Things

This was a great way to kick off my birthday celebration! I went in, thinking it was a rom-com, instead I was handed a refreshing twist! Rachel Weisz plays this artsy character who’s really into sex, art projects and stirring shit and Paul Rudd plays her clueless boyfriend. Rachel’s character decides to change the main character, she changes the way he dresses and even convinces him to have a nose job. The ruthlessness of Rachel Weisz’s character and Paul Rudd’s naivity balance themselves out perfectly.

Finding Normal

A big fan of Full House over here. Yes, this means I am quickly running out of the cute romcoms and murder mysteries starring Candace Cameron Bure. According to letterboxd, I’ve seen 27 of her films (out of 40), and there were maybe 3 that were genuenly good? I’m looking at you Punchline (also starring Sally Field and Tom Hanks), Freshman Fall, it’s this campus rape made for tv film were Candace plays a survivor and No One Would Tell, another 90s tv movie where Candace plays a teen who’s abused and eventually killed by her boyfirend, played by Wonder Years’ Fred Savage. Some true genius thought to put Full House agains Wonder Years. Finding Normal is an awesomely cute romcom, which seems a lot like a fresh take on Doc Hollywood. I really hope I’ll get to show it to my mum one day, as I know for a fact she would love it.

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started in 2010 as weekly reviews of movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, mostly thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

About the Author

All I do is watch movies, the good, the bad and the ugly. Sometimes I make my own.

Check out my latest film (120K+ views on Youtube):

www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP3Iz23hD7M

I’ve seen over 6000 films and 220 TV shows. I have a degree in Film Production, and wrote my dissertation on Italian neorealism. I mostly gravitate towards social issues films, anything Ken Loach, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica or Jafar Panahi, etc.

I rate films within genre. I watch a lot of films on Mubi, Filmbox Arthouse. My favourite directors are Yasujiro Ozu, Ken Loach, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Zhang Yimou, Roberto Rossellini, Ingmar Bergman, Brian De Palma, Vittorio De Sica and Andrzej Wajda. My favourite actresses have always been Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. I’m nostalgic and reminisce a lot. I’m at the cinema 10 times a month. And I’m a Polish-British millennial.

I will watch anything:

psychological | arthouse | foreign | independent | drama | horror | lgbt | strong female characters | female centred films | dysfunctional families | sexual assault | troubled childhood | mental health issues

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

favourite film and tv quotes

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘I used to think about
your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I  knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’ (Disobedience)

‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’ (The Aviator)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’
‘No, actually you do. Your mother quit your father. Your father quit you. You quit your boyfriend and if I read your hospital chart correctly you quit your life momentarily on a couple of occasions. You quit. It’s what you know how to do.’ (Greys)

‘Where the hell was I that year?’
‘Your were watching television’. (Everybody Loves Raymond)

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’
(Short Term 12)

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’ (Disobedience)

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a moment when our lives change forever. The moment we admit our weaknesses, the moment we rise to a challenge, the moment we accept a sacrifice, or let a loved one go. And sometimes the change in our lives is an answer to our prayers.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘Don’t wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don’t. In face of what we can lose in a day, in an instant, wonder what the hell it is that make us hold it together.’  (Greys)

‘Bree sobbed quietly in the restroom for five miutes, but her husband never knew, because when Bree finally emerged, she was perfect.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘I am not food, you cannot just eat and eat.’ (The Favourite)

‘I don’t love him.’
‘Of course you do.’
‘No!’
‘Don’t take me for a fool Olive,  I’m many things but I’m not a fool.’
‘I know that, you’re brilliant.’
‘Don’t you see, it’s over. Whatever this is, was, it’s over.’
‘I love You.’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing, is reason enough to celebrate.’ (Greys)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘What happened last year when you fell in the water?’
‘I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?’
‘You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ammunition.’
‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’
‘When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.’
‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

‘Dr, I have been this way since…since I can remember. There is no cure.’ (American Horror Story)

‘He was so crazy about me, I couldn’t breathe. So we tried drinking our way back into love, but it never made sense in the morning. So I ran. And every time I came back, he was here. And he was still crazy about me.’ (My Blueberry Nights)

‘Bree van de Kamp had always wanted to live her life with elegance and grace. That is also how she wanted to die. Her plan was to pour herself a glass of her favorite chardonnay, put on her most stylish nightgown and leave behind a note on embossed stationery.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘All we have is this moment. The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid being alive today. So be… here…. now.’ (Six Feet Under)

‘On the train coming here, we were in the same cart, I saw you, you were reading and you feel asleep. I didn’t dare to look at you, you were so beautiful, it was scary. Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a time when we must expose our weaknesses. When our secrets can no longer remain private, when our solitude can no longer be denied, when our pain can no longer be ignored, but sometimes we feel so alone that a weakness we thought we’d overcome suddenly becomes too strong to fight.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’
‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
‘Okay, but what about you?’
‘That is me. And you? Are you happy?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Have you been with other women?’
‘No. Not really. And you?’
‘No.’
‘But, Esti… Do you still
only fancy women?’ (Disobedience)

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’ (Thelma & Louise)

‘She let me live at Nora’s house. She let me believe that I was a part of their family. I fell in love with that family. What am I supposed to do, just sit there, pretend I’m related to them? I was happy. For the first time in my life I was happy.’ (Brothers and Sisters)

‘You will be left all alone with your bitterness and your rage and your knowledge that you loved her and she loved you and you threw it away for them.’
‘Do you love her?’
‘Yes.’
‘And Have you always?’
‘Yes.’
‘So then ask her.’
‘Olive, will you forgive me?’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘No razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’
(Short Term 12)

‘You can’t take a picture of this. It’s already gone.’ (Six Feet Under)
