Thelma & Louise

Every time I watch Thelma & Louise I think of how much fun these two would have in prison. I can see them forming a gang and bossing everyone around. When I was a teenager, I suffered from depression and I was infatuated with thoughts of suicide and truly contemplated it, which is why this film means so much to me. I love the ending so much even though it leaves me depressed for days every time, but it’s a shame they didn’t get to enjoy more of their time together.

‘You let her go, you fuckin’ asshole, or I’m gonna splatter your ugly face all over this nice car!’

‘Looks like you got a real fucked-up idea of fun. In the future, when a woman’s crying like that, she isn’t having any fun!’

‘You be sweet to ’em, especially your wife. My husband wasn’t sweet to me. Look how I turned out.’

‘I think I fucked up. I think I got us in a situation where we both could get killed. Damn, I don’t know why I just didn’t go to the police right away.’
‘You know why. You already said.’
‘What’d I say again?’
‘Nobody’d believe us. We’d still get in trouble, we’d still have our lives ruined. You know what else?’
‘What?’
‘That guy was hurting me. If you hadn’t come out when you did, he would’ve hurt me a lot worse. And probably nothing would’ve happened to him ’cause everybody did see me dancin’ with him all night. They would’ve made out like I’d asked for it. My life would’ve been ruined a whole lot worse than it is now. At least now I’m havin’ some fun. And I’m not sorry that son of a bitch is dead. I’m just sorry it was you that did it and not me.’

‘Well, you get what you settle for.’

‘You’ve always been crazy. This is just the first chance you’ve ever had to really express yourself.’

‘Well, we’re not in the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here.’

‘I don’t remember ever feeling this awake.’

‘Louise, no matter what happens, I’m glad I came with you.’

‘Louise, shoot the radio.’
‘Right.’
‘The Police radio, Louise!’

‘Now, I swear three days ago neither one of us would’ve ever pulled a stunt like this, but if you was ever to meet my husband, you’d understand why.’

‘You said you ‘n’ me was gonna get out of town and for once just really let our hair down. Well, darlin’, look out, ’cause my hair is comin’ down!’

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’

Eagle Eye

I’ve worked for the mail before and though I’ve only visited the warehouse a few times during my year there, after watching Eagle Eye, I wish I had taken a ride down the parcel sorting machine, it sure looks fun! Never even crossed my mind this was possible and I probably would have broken my neck falling down the chute, but this is honestly the only scene worth seeing. Also, Julianne Moore lends her voice to a robot and doesn’t really sound like herself as a result, which is a bummer since I’ve only watched this film because of her.

4/10

Red Nose Day Actually

I’ve had this on my DVR for 3 years and finally watched it today, only to realise Laura Linney isn’t in the UK version! I had to watch it online and Laura’s character is now married to, and has kids with Patrick Dempsey?!

6/10

Shoulder Arms

Finally, a Chaplin short where Charlie doesn’t fight with men over random women he met in the park.

4/10

Traffik

Missi Pyle really missed out on playing a likeable character for once.

Many shows are finishing early this year due to Coronavirus. I was secretly hoping the last few episodes would be moved to August or something. We are losing a few episodes of most shows and this is very upsetting. Does this mean all the shows need to be renewed though? So we all see how exactly the showrunners wanted to end this season. I don’t really know why This is Us has always been an 18 episode a season kind of show, but it certainly worked out for them this year. How to Get Away With Murder returns April 2nd. This list only includes shows I follow, but It should be useful for you too.

Grey’s Anatomy: April 9 (Cut short – to finish with episode 21 instead of 25)

Modern Family: April 8 (Series finale – as normal)

The Resident: April 7 (Cut short – to finish with episode 20 instead of 23)

This is Us: March 24 (Season finale already aired)

SVU: April 23 (Affected – Cut short, 20 episodes instead of 24)

911: May 11 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

The Goldbergs: May 6 (Not Affected – All shot)

Schooled: May 6 (Not Affected – All shot)

Riverdale: May 6 (Affected – Cut short from 22 episodes to 19)

Station 19: April 9 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

The Good Fight: Unknown date (Cut short from 10 episodes to 7)

How To Get Away With Murder: May 14 (Not affected – All episodes shot – Show returns April 2)

Good Girls: May 3 (Affected – Cut short from 16 episodes to 11)

Killing Eve: Unknown Date (Not affected – All episodes shot)

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: May 3 (Not affected – All episodes shot)

Film Reviews: The Hunt. The Circle. Doing Time for Patsy Cline. The Property Man

I have officially finished my Miranda Otto marathon, it took me 3 weeks or so. The only three films of hers I still haven’t seen are True Love and Chaos, also starring Naveen Andrews, Kin, starring Isiah Washington and Three Legged Fox. I just cannot find them anywhere. I hope I won’t need to reschedule my April flight for August, but if I do, I’ll still take time off and just spend the two weeks at home watching films. Here are some quick notes I wrote down while watching the below four films.

the hunt the circle patsy theprop

The Hunt

A brilliant thriller from the producers of The Purge. It’s the film I’ve been talking about for the last 8 month, and every person I mention the plot to says, oh so it’s like The Purge. In a way, it is. 12 people are kidnapped and left in the woods. People are hunting them down. Theyre given guns, but they have no chance. The films stars Hilary Swank as the villain and then from the huntees, you’ll probably only recognise 3 people (inlcuding Emma Roberts and Justin Hartley from This is Us). Those three people don’t live long in this movie. There’s one scene in this that is stopping me from giving it a 10 and it involves an eye and a high heel. I still cannot believe The Hunt’s US release was cancelled or postponed because of Trump.

9/10

The Circle

This is like that Black Mirror episode starring Bryce Dallas Howard where people can rate human interractions. Have they never heard of the Data Protection Act, now superseded by the General Data Protection Regulation? Why on Earth would anyone agree to this? And why did Tom Hanks agree to do this awful film? Watch ‘The Circle’ starring Julie Benz instead.

3/10

Doing time for Patsy Cline

A young musician decides to leave Australia and head for Nashville, but hitchhikes with the wrong couple. He falls for the female, played by Miranda Otto, and police arrest him for drug possesion. He decides to sacrifice his freedom, because he’s conviced the girl will fall in love with him. In his mind he plays this alternate universe in which him and Patsy become these big country music stars and fall in love. His maladaptive dreaming eventually ruins his life, as his love for the girl overtakes his clear judgement. I too have always lived in my head. For me, I think, It comes with being an only child. Constant maladaptive daydreaming though pleasant and reassuring, is dangerous. It’s affected my life, but It’s also saved it. It’s made me into this creative individual and is major source of ongoing writing material. I saw someone on instagram tell Miranda she looks like Susan Sarandon, it must have been the poster for this film that made them think that, because they look nothing like.

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’

7/10

The Property Man

This is my 20th Chaplin short and they’re all the same to me now. I think I’ll just stick to his feature films from now on.

The fact that my parents and I are the only people I know who are forced to continue coming in to work, despite not being coppers, pharmacists or medical staff is making me upset. I want my parents to sit at home and for me to work from home, but that’s not going to happen. They’ve closed cinemas and gyms, which means I’ll have time to clear off my Netflix and HBO Go watchlists and catch up on my shows. Two of my closest friends, a nurse and a pharmacist are also physically at work, but that’s understandable with their professions and I’m thankful for their bravery in this scary time. Everyone else though? Working from home, social distancing or self isolating. Here are my notes from the last few episodes I watched. They’re not reviews, because spending the world pandemic at work is making me question my life choices and just feeling resigned and upset with life in general.

Greys 16.17

Finally, a fantastic episode. Exactly why Greys will always be my favourite show. Jo and Link run into two teenagers in love at the train station. They later end up in the hospital when one of them is hit by the train. Mer tells Koracick what she would do if she was the chief. Richard quits surgery after showing early signs of Parkinsons. Link tells Amelia he loves her and we finally learn who’s the baby daddy.

OMG, Link, it’s the face eaters from this morning.
Amelia’s baby may be yours.
If you have a baby with Amelia, what does that mean for us?
Don’t push Amelia away.
I go with my gut.
I’ve decided to step away from surgery indefinitely.
Richard, this place needs you.
And that’s how I want to step away. At the top of my game.
We’ve both seen people clinging to their scalpel for more than they should.
One by one, they dropped off until Torres and I were the only ones left. Then she left. At some point it stops feeling like victory and just feels lonely. I just don’t know how to do this without him or if I want to.
Richard Webber is stepping down from surgery.
I hate that that hurts you, because you’re such a good guy.
I’m not a good guy!
I don’t think that’s true.
That is true.
You’re not okay. You’re not yourself. Listen to people when they tell you that. Get help before it’s too late.
You are not a replacement for anyone and if you need to tell me anything. My answer will be I love you. And we’re gonna figure it out. That’s my answer today. That’s my answer tomorrow. That’s my answer always. I don’t wanna live without you.
I was hurting, I was in pain. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love you , because I do, I want you. I fell in love with you, Amelia and I fall in love with this baby and that’s what matters to me.
I really needed to hear that, because I hot the results, the baby is yours.

8.5/10

Greys 16.18

This show is inconsistent at this point. One good episode, and then another two mediocre ones. DeLuca asks everyone to surround the child trafficking mother, but they form a chain around DeLuca. DeLuca ends up in the looney bin, and we learned that the mother may actually be trafficking the girl.

Do you know what they call pro-bono day in Ireland? Every day.
She fits the profile.
For what?
Human trafficking.
I gave up my European work visa.
Code purple. Someone’s getting violent with the staff.
Arrest this woman for child trafficking.

3/10

SVU 21.16

Amanda’s sister is back and she has a kid now. We meet Amanda’s dad, who’s a drunk. Amanda seems to have messed her knee up, possibly while running. Kim claims a doctor is extorting her for sex. Mariska pretends she’s on Grey’s Anatomy and goes undercover as a doctor. Amanda gets temporary custody of her sister’s kid. That doesn’t go according to plan, as the father overdoses. The new cop makes out with a woman while undercover. Amanda’s mother is moving to New York to help out, and that’s definitely going to work out too.

Doctor Benson.
He’s my nephew and I promise to take good care of him.
I’m not interested in how the doctors get laid.
That woman is undercover NYPD, and so is she.
Papa has a rolling stone.
No matter how fast you run, you can’t outrun your family.

6.5/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.02

I didn’t know Jane has such a good singing voice. This episode made me super stressed about my work, so that’s not good.

Dad can communicate now.

3/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.03

I need this entire soundtrack released at the end of the season, as I’m going to download all songs performed by Lauren Graham. In this episode, Lauren sings The Rolling Stone’s ‘Satisfaction’ and Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’. ‘Weeds’ brother in law was cast as Joan’s husband.

1.5/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.04

Zoey learns that Mo is scared to show her real identity in the church. She also learns she doesn’t know much about religion.

Is this job really worth the cheaper rent?

1/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.05

You know what’s extraordinary? The song Just Give Me a Reason by Pink.

It’s too passive aggressive. I like aggressive, aggressive.

1/10

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist 1.06

I’m here for the songs and Lauren Graham. LG sings Kesha’s Don’t stop in this episode.

I should check on Joan before she becomes a HR situation.

0.5/10

Carol’s Second Act 1.18

Here it is, the season finale of the show that made me miss The Middle and Everybody Loves Raymond. Kyle MacLachlan’s character loves pistachio ice cream? That’s my favourite flavour! Kelsey Grammar plays Carol’s ex-husband and becomes the chief of staff. We should see a lot of him, if the show is renewed.

I am not interested in Dr Kenney.
My great weakness is, I’m gonna say, pistachio ice cream.
I may have feelings for Dr Kenney.

2/10

Good Girls 3.03

Beth tells the bad guy she’s pregnant with his baby, because she thinks that’s the only way he won’t kill her. Beth convinces her husband Dean to have sex with her multiple times a day, so she can fool the bad guy into thinking the newly conceived baby is his. The problem is, Dean doesn’t want more kids, seeing how they already have four. I miss how good the previous 2 seasons were, this is a mess.

Am I just a sperm bank?

1/10

When Calls the Heart 7.03

Clara gets everyone excited about her wedding and asks Bill to walk her down the isle.

You’re going to be far too busy. You’re gonna be walking me down the isle. You’re the closest thing that I have to a father.

2/10

When Calls the Heart 7.04

While we’re dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic, Hope Valley is infested with chicken pox. Faith may have just exited the show when we weren’t looking. Everyone who doesn’t have children with  chicken pox, is selected for jury duty.

2/10

Modern Family 11.15

The shelf fell from the stairs while Claire was having her interview and Mitch and Cam are adopting a baby boy.

Daddy’s 44 and you’re 48.
I’ll be 66. And he’ll be 61.
I know that I can go into my office and file bills in a color coded divider and experience one moment of peace.
Yes, my husband and I would like to adopt him.

3/10

Schooled 2.16

The Beverly Goldberg Schmoopie Pie rule.

1/10

The Goldbergs 7.17

Jeffrey noticed Erika has become grumpy since giving up music. I liked this episode, because I could relate. As a teenager I used to do various creative things every day, wheras now, I don’t anymore and I’ve become pessimistic, and I’m always negative, sarcastic and annoyed by everyone and everything. Then I do something creative for a day, and suddenly it’s 2012 again and I’m happy.

Music was your life, it brought you so much joy. And now you’re just kinda frowny.
Erika hadn’t been a fan of a capella in the past. But in that moment, she didn’t just hear it with her ears, she felt it with her heart.
Molly Singwalds.
Go fuck yourself.
Cramps? That’s not a real name.
We definitely did it.

3/10

The Simpsons 31.13

I like this version of Cats more than the one with Judy Dench and Taylor Swift.

Vegan restaurant.
Cats.

1/10

The Simpsons 31.14

Homer shares Martin Scorsese’s opinion on Marvel films, something I agree with too.

Flag yourself challenge.
As a grown up, I know that muscle jerks in tights with magic powers punching and hugging each other is boring BS for babies.

1/10

The Simpsons 31.15

The Simpsons go to a phone rehab after they realize they spend too much time staring at their screens.

Marketing a murderer.
Most likely to murder.
Oh I thought they were donuts, just really far away.
Did you know our second dog is a cat?
Must retweet!
I could help you with your food addiction.
What do you mean?
Psychologically, you’re a baby with a gun sticking food in his mouth. Eat, eat, eat all day.
Wow, you’re such a great profiler.
With you, we wouldn’t even need DNA evidence. So sick of getting criminals to give semen samples.
Chief, you don’t need semen. A lock of her will do.
It would?!

8/10

The Simpsons 31.16

Bart is at doctor’s appointment.
Milhouse, you didn’t tell me your dad got another bad job.
You have no idea how far up there I went.
Listen, stupid Flanders.
Let me just walk away with dignity (said Homer with a dog stuck to his butt).

I  finished another film diary, and what I’m planning on doing now is brining my home printer downstairs to the living room, so I can print little posters of films I watch and stick them in there, because let’s be honest, I spend most of my time off in front of TV. For the last two weeks I’ve been having a massive Miranda Otto marathon, which is making me miss Australia, a lot.

Reaching For The Moon

A flawless film portraying how pure, fragile and problematic love truly is. I loved Elizabeth’s relationship with alcohol, almost as much as I loved her relationship with Lota. This couldn’t last because Elizabeth made it clear she didn’t want to live in Brasil, while Lota had everything she wanted in Brasil. There was certain disdain in Cookie’s voice when she talked about living in Brasil. Even though Elizabeth knew her college friend was in a relationship with this woman, she raised her chin for the woman to kiss her again. The ending reminded me of The Favourite, with how the 3rd woman kept the two main characters apart by destroying letters one sent to another, single handily ruining their lives. Get yourself a lesbian girlfriend who will wash your hair every night.

‘How are your parents?’
‘We don’t speak.’
‘What happened?’
‘I live with a woman.’

‘How close were you in college?’
‘We were both very busy pretending not to be who we were while being attracted to each other for what we thought the other might be. No, we didn’t, but we were close.’

‘There was this boy who was crazy for her. I don’t know what she did to him, but he sent her a postcard saying ‘Go to hell, Elizabeth’ and then he killed himself.’

‘I hear one of my poems and I’m mortified.’
‘Yes, I guess this is why you should never meet authors.’

‘A kiss and wake up situation.’
‘Something like that, but without the kiss.’

‘Still want to kiss me?’

‘To everything in life that may seem improbable, but is not impossible.’

‘I want you to stay.’

‘We are great friends, we love each other, but basically, we’re roommates.’
‘Does Mary know you’re roommates?’
‘Of course she does. Maybe she doesn’t want to admit it.’

‘So, I’m leaving. I’m going back home until you can figure this out.’
‘Mary, this is your home.’
‘Then send her away.’
‘I can’t.’
‘You don’t know her. She screws everything up. She was like that in college.’
‘Let’s adopt a baby.’
‘You’ll buy me a baby, so you can have an affair with another woman?’

‘I should warn you. Unless I’m rather drunk, I’m very shy.‘

‘I have no other option than to love you.’

‘It’s okay I’m not drunk, I’m just crying in English.’

‘I already have a commitment to pessimism. Pessimist is never disappointed.’

‘I don’t drink because things go wrong. I want to drink every minute of every day. Things going wrong just gives me the excuse I’ve been looking for.’
‘But why?’
‘Because if I don’t have what I want, I’m lonely and sad. And if I do have what I want, I’m sure I’m gonna lose it. And the waiting is unbearable.‘

Bombshell

I couldn’t stop comparing it to The Loudest Voice. Best friends Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts ended up playing the same character this year, Gretchen Carlson. Bombshell focused more on Megyn’s story, whereas Showtime’s mini series on Gretchen’s. Mark Duplass, who was recently seen in Apple’s The Morning Show, also heavily based on this scandal, here stars as Megyn Kelly’s husband. 15 years ago Charlize Theron starred in a brilliant film about sexual harassment at work called North Country. I recommend you watch North Country and The Loudest Voice and skip this one.

5/10

Dance Academy: The Movie

I’ve seen a few episodes of Dance Academy here and there back when I lived in Australia, but never really got into it. The film version shows the hardships that come with auditioning. I found it oddly satisfying how they haven’t befriended any new people since leaving the academy. Maybe school friendships last despite what everyone says? I certainly hope so.

7/10

The Jack Bull

Miranda Otto goes into the town to convince people to give her what her family needs, because as she claims, she’s better at politics than her husband. Red flags light up in my head, ‘oh sweetie, don’t, you’re gonna get yourself raped.’ What happens you may ask? Not only doesn’t she fix anything, she dies in the most absurd way.

King Lear

They really did a poor job modernising this Shakespearean play. The only good thing about this film is that one third of it was shot at the gorgeous Hatfield House.

3/10

Like a Boss

This was fun and I would recognise Lisa Kudrow’s voice straight away.

5/10

Dark  Waters

Before they mentioned teflon, it was just like that John Travolta film ‘A Civil Action’, and then it got real. If you’re reading this, get rid of all your teflon kitchenware. Then again, It’s already too late.

8/10

What Did Jack Do?

I’ll watch anything David Lynch has and will ever make and Netflix decided to buy this little short of his. I liked Rabbits, another short of David’s starring Naomi Watts more. Why do the monkey and David talk like they’re in the Black Lodge?

Congrats to SVU on being renewed for seasons 22, 23 and 24! For the longest time TV shows were what kept me alive, and even though I’m in a better headspace now, I still think like that sometimes. Just quickly wanted to say thank you to Greys and SVU for giving me a reason to keep going for the last 12 years. No matter what life throws at me, how lonely or angry I am, no matter how much I hate myself for being different or how much I overthink everything, they’re always there for me and I truly hope it stays that way for many, many years.

I keep stuggling for time this year, because everyone at work seems to be getting suspended and as a result I’m asked to come in on my days off. It looks like it will stay this way until May, so I’ve decided to leave some shows until summer, and only watch the ones I either really love, are directly connected to a show I love or are a twenty minute comedy that I can easily watch after a tiring day of work without having to focus on the storyline too much.

Shows I’ll Keep Watching:

Grey’s Anatomy
SVU
Station 19
Carol’s Second Act
The Goldbergs
Shooled
Modern Family

Shows I’m Putting off until Summer:

How To Get Away with Murder
This is Us
911
Good Girls
The Resident
Riverdale
The Simpsons

If I do find time to catch up I may do so, especially with Rverdale, since it’s one click away, on Netflix.

Now, onto my notes.

Greys 16.13

A young girl is accidentally outed to her mom by her aunt. The below quote makes it one of the best episodes this season. Just read it.

‘Taylor Olson is a girl. My sister thinks Taylor is a boy, but my daughter Maddie was kissing a girl at school. Which means that my sister basically just outed my daughter and she doesn’t even know it. Maddie must be furious and confused and I don’t know, happy? In love? Definitely in need of her cool, supportive mom and not her uptight aunt who never wanted to be a parent.‘

6/10

Greys Anatomy 16.14

Deluca obsesses about a case he’s working on, just like his father did before his diagnosis. Meredith and Karina are concerned. Weakest episode in a while.

For an only child, you’re an excellent sister.
We’re all a little manic when we’re in love.
How do you tell a healthy obsession from mania?

2/10

Modern Family 11.14

Mitch and Cam are adopting again!

An old lady walking her poodle trips and gets dragged through a rose bush and these two burst out laughing.
I want to stress that I’m adopted.
Dad left the closet scene in the 80s.
So did I.
They sound like weirdos. No sale.

2.5/10

Station 19 3.04

Of course they thought chubby Helm wasn’t hot enough for Karina. I do ship Maya and Karina. It’s official, now you really do need to watch Station 19 before Greys. Through various flashbacks, we learn about Maya’s past. They show us her life in high school and her first crush. As a teenager Maya didn’t have a favourite band or a TV show, or a celebrity crush, but had a real-life crush and the crush liked her back.  The team go camping and run into a bear.  Maya lost a race because she stopped to help her girlfriend. Her father, disowns her for losing the race. When the bear rips someone’s nose from their face, Older Herrera tells Maya to run with it to catch up with Avery.

Baby bear means.
Momma bear.
We’re here, we’re human, we’re big.
Stay calm, identify yourself, get big. Dad, you taught me that.
Go Maya!
You quit art, you’ll finish first.
Because if you don’t excel, you’re just a deletant, which is a fancy word for loser.
I’m sorry I called you a slut.
I don’t just miss Ryan, I feel like a part of me is lost.

7/10

Carol’s Second Act 1.16

Carol is in love with the new doctor that looks a lot like Patricia’s real life husband.

0.5/10

Schooled 2.15

One of the kid’s is goth. Lanie finds her notebook and learns the girl is not on good terms with her mom. The principal writes awful poetry. Lanie related to the girl, because her mother walked out on her when she was a teenager.

What the fuck was that?
That explains why she looks like Lily Munster.
I want every man in the world to love you.
The point is that was ten years ago and those people are still my friends and all because I went out and connected with other people.
The fuck is that.
Nice suit.
It’s my grandpa’s . He died in it.
Turns out I have some really pushy friends that I’m very lucky to have.
We’re lucky too.
Please come back, Burt Reynolds’s mustache.

5/10

The Goldbergs 7.15

Bev gets crazy after her cookbook gets published.

0.5/10

When Call the Heart 7.01

What year are we on now? Rosemary mentioned seeing a new Chaplin film.

And I hear this Chaplin fella is doing quite well these days.

Netflix’s ‘Soundtrack’ starring Madeleine Stowe has been cancelled and The Good Place has ended. 2019 brought a lot of interesting miniseries, so I think it’s safe to say I won’t have 50 series to follow this year. Shameless is now officially on a break until next year when It comes back for 11th and final season. It’s an excellent show and I will miss it dearly. It’s my third favourite show that’s still on air and 2021 will be sad without it. American Horror Story has officially been renewed for 3 more seasons and I just really hope Sarah Paulson comes back for good. When Calls the Heart and One Day at A Time return later this month. A few shows including American Horror Story won’t be back till September. 911 and How To Get Away With Murder won’t be back until April. I still haven’t caught up on This is Us, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Riverdale, Killing Eve, Absentia and The Good Fight. I’m also excited to see Netflix’s version of Snowpiercer. Killing Eve has been renewed for season 4, but I still haven’t fully caught up on season 2.

Shows I’ll follow this midseason or summertime:

Greys
Law and Order SVU
Fuller House
How To Get Away with Murder
Carol’s Second Act
Modern Family
The Goldbergs
Schooled
Station 19
This is Us
The Resident
Riverdale
13 Reasons Why
Good Girls
Ozark

Absentia
The Handmaid’s Tale
One Day at a Time
F For Family

SVU 21.12

Three coppers shoot themselves in this episode including one we know very well. Olivia’s old friend from academy is the first one. Benson and the team later find out she was raped on the job by someone from her old team, VICE. Olivia’s old shrink comes back to treat the entire department and is also a witness to the second copper’s death. We learn that Tucker, Olivia’s ex and Elliot’s least favourite person, has cancer and that’s why he didn’t remember the first victim. We learn Olivia regrets leaving him and clearly still loves him. Tucker recently got married and decides not to be a burden on his new wife. This leaves Olivia devastated.

You just did something you never did when we were dating.
What?
You lied to my face.
She accused your partner.
Her career would have been ruined.
It was ruined anyway. She fell apart.
It sounds like she was slut shamed into keeping her mouth shut.
My old sergeant, he killed himself. Two hours after we talked to him.
Why didn’t he get the help he needed.
You heard his final words.
Ed, are you saying you covered up a rape to protect your friend?
No, I would never. He told me he had an affair with Rachel, and when he broke it off she cried rape and I stupidly believed him.
I’m sorry for the way I ended things.
What I wish I had and what I wish we had is more time.
We’ll always have Paris. You know, I’ve always wanted to say that.
He took his life with his old 38. I just don’t know what to do with that.
There’s nothing you can do with it, it just is.
He had brain cancer.
It’s suffering Liv, it’s not how we want to be remembered.
I know, I know. It’s just a lot of rain in one place.

10/10

SVU 21.13

Cat’s been taking boxing lessons and suspects one of fellow boxers is getting abused by the trainer.

Telling your story isn’t weak. And whatever happened to you doesn’t define you.
He gets stuffed, doesn’t he?
That’s all men actually.
Maybe you got too close.
Jesus. That’s what whispered when he crawled into my bed.
Your father?
At night I heard his footsteps and that’s how I knew he was coming for me. He’d get under my covers, move on top of me, hold me down.
I should have protected her.
Like you should have protected your sister? Your father got to her too?
I raised you alone, I had needs.

greys

Greys 16.10

Teddy and Owen, my second favourite pairing after Calzona, are engaged! Amelia is not going to tell Link that the little boy she’s carrying could be Owen’s! Owen and Jackson learn that Korasik is actually a sensitive guy. Maggie is getting sued by her long lost family for not being able to save her cousin’s life. I’m not a fa of how they chose to have Helm profess her love to Meredith, this could have been amazing, and it’s a cringy disaster. I’m glad they haven’t killed Helm off, because we’ll all gladly follow her storyline. So far all we know about her is that she’s gay and has a major crush on Meredith.

10/10

Greys 16.11

Why do US doctors call the ER the pit? I would certainly like to know that just as much as the new Irish doctor. Amelia finally tells Link the baby may not be his. Teddy loses the engagement ring she got from Owen last week, and as we later learn, Leo swallowed it. Korascik is slowly becoming one of my favourite characters. Catherine wants to separate from Richard.

Are you calling the ER, the pit? Why?
I don’t know.
I honestly worry for your entire genre sometimes.
What was the doctors name?
Dr Yang.
Let’s talk about it after you’ve had something to eat.
When someone shows you who they are, you’re supposed to believe them.

4/10

Greys 16.12

Schmidt visits his dying uncle and when he comes out to him, the uncle dies. Catherine and Richard host an Anniversary party and when they’re about to tell Maggie and Jackson about the separation, firefighters show up. Peter Strauss from Rich Man, Poor Man guest stars as Levy Schmidt’s uncle’s boyfriend. Schmidt moves out of his mom basement, because she didn’t tell anyone in their family he’s gay. Richard and Karev offer Maggie a job and she accepts it whereas Catherine is thinking of buying Karev’s hospital.

I killed him. I killed him with my gayness.
When you started ‘rolling around together’.
Apologies don’t have the word ‘but’ in them.
I would have married him, I would have, but I didn’t know how to live with someone who didn’t love himself.
He was ashamed of himself, every day.
You have the freedom that he never gave himself.
We’re separating.
How long has this been going on for?
Who cares?!
You’re super Jewish now?
Now, but I am super gay, and you telling me that you accept me, yet refusing to tell any member of our family, that’snot accepting me. That’s not being proud of me and I can’t do it anymore. I won’t.
I’m not going to wait until I’m at an old age home with croshade blankets surrounded by people who never got to love me the way I deserved.
I’m moving out.

8/10

Station 19 3.01

Every time there is another catastrophe on Greys, there’s gonna be a Greys/Station 19 crossover. Helm, the gay intern, who’s in love with Meredith is injured. It’s sad that due to the Meredith going to jail storyline, no one from Greys threw Bailey a baby shower, whereas Station 19 characters did? They break into the house of two of the victims to feed their dog. Herrera tells his daughter Andrea off for sleeping around with co-workers.

8/10

Station 19 3.02

Andy finds a neighbour after she’s accidentally slit her wrist on a wine glass. Meanwhile the team are called into a clothing store. Customers make sure to steal clothes before evacuating. A teenager is scared of shootings. Herrera now runs an ambulance service? They showed us Warren’s past. Warren goes into fire without his helmet. Ben goes to visit a friend who was put on life support after Ben dared him to do something stupid. Ben comes to a realisation that him changing his careers, first being an anaesthesiologist, then a surgeon, and now a fire fighter were all his ways to try and save his friend. He also says he wanted to name his child Danny after his friend, but now that Miranda’s miscarried and they’re both in their late 40s, that’s probably not going to happen. Ryan tells Andy he’s still in love with her. Ben convinces his boss to create a physician response team, and he wants to become a field surgeon, surgeon first on the scene. A little boy finds his mom’s gun and shoots Ryan.

He looks like a sex offender.
Cop, not sex offender.
You’re the surgeon.
I am, I was.
Can I move in with you when I get fired?
I just called him a sex offender.
Shots fired.
It’s fireworks.
Officer, I want to report my husband for criminal stupidity.
Please don’t shoot me.
I see shootings on the news every day. And at school the lockdown drills, lock the doors, lights out, stay quiet. I always knew I would be in one of these eventually. I knew it, my brother always told me it’s statistically unlikely, but I know. I don’t even go to the movies anymore. Every time I go to the grocery store, I check for all the exits, I didn’t even want to come here to try on this suit, but my sister is getting married, so I had to get a suit. No I guess If I die, they’ll bury me in this suit.
Bishop’s kinda got a stick up her fine ass.
Bishop’s a lieutenant, watch your mouth.
The news you watch every day is designed to terrify you, because if it terrifies you, you drink more, you smoke more, you take more prescription drugs, and that financially benefits the same people who program the news. And yes, there are bad people with crazy amount of guns, but there are good people too. Kind people, people who fight for justice, and take care of your neighbours, and build houses, plant trees and ignore the few angry, or rise above it. So don’t waste your energy worrying you’re gonna get shot, use it to fight for the world you wanna be a part of. Use all that energy to make your fully functional legs, lift you up out of this pee stained suit and march to the world you wanna live in.
You should run for office or something.
I like my job.
I am surgeon who’s also a first responder.

8/10

Station 3.03

I am shocked they actually killed Ryan. He and Andrea were end game. Maya is promoted to Captain over Herrera. Herrera Senior was the one who asked Ryan to join Andy in Seattle as he’s worried he only has a year or so left to live. Greys cast guest stars including Korasik, Avery and Schmidt’s boyfriend.

4/10

Carol’s Second Act 1.13

Lexie stays at Carol’s after a gas leak at her apartment. They finally showed us Carol’s house and it’s nothing like Patricia’s The Middle and Everybody Loves Raymond houses. I liked the other ones much more. Carol realises her neighbour has a crush on her and she hasn’t seen it because after 22 years of marriage she is still wearing marriage glasses. Kyle McLachlan’s character complemented Frankie, yet It’s not clear whether they’ll be together or not, but then again, why else would Kyle agree to do this little show? My family and I are re-watching Desperate Housewives, we’re in the middle of season 2 and I just cannot wait for Orson to show up in three or four episodes. Patricia Heaton has just announced she’s written another book, this one will be called The Second Act and just like with her cook book, I’ll purchase it.

What should we do first, binge a TV show?
Carol with her hair down.
He wants to get into your gutters.
Welcome to Carol’s Great Opening!
I want to tell the whole world that I love you! I planted that lemon tree just for you.
Just FYI I would have been home in like 45 minutes.
I’d prefer if the grey-haired doctor did everything from now on.
Last night he chopped down the lemon tree.

5/10

Carol’s Second Act 1.14

Carol has noticed the group is starting to grow apart. Lexie didn’t tell anyone she’s a stand up comedian and (I almost typed Frankie instead of Carol, haha – I miss the Hecks). Carol gets everyone to turn up by telling them they’re the core of the group. Lexie jokes about Jen and Daniel dating which infuriates Carol.

Because you’ll the elder?
Because I’m the core.
Last time I was at a comedy club, I was still with your dad. The joke’s on me.
I keep thinking about how easy it would be to kidnap him.
There’s this old doctor, Carol.
I actually went on a date with them.
This is how I would react. Are you kidding me?!

3/10

Schooled 2.13

The episode revolves around Titanic and Lanie and CB argue about what anyone that’s seen the film argues about, that there was more than enough room for both Rose and Jack on that door. Lanie sees Titanic 30 times and how have I not realised Karan Bran from Jessie has joined the cast? Wilma confronts CB about his love of Lanie and Lanie finally realises she’s the girl CB is in love with.

Oh my God, I’m the girl. I’m the girl!

4/10

The Goldbergs 7.13

Adam watches the Oscars and later doubts himself when he learns the other Adam Goldberg didn’t make it in Hollywood.

As an aspiring filmmaker…
In that moment, my mom did something I never could have imagined. She gave me a highlight reel of every movie I’ve ever made. Maybe they weren’t all award winners. But thanks to her, I realised making movies wasn’t about succeeding in Hollywood, it was about creating something special with the people I loved and If I could do that for the rest of my life, I’d be living the dream.
These movies remind me that you are joyful and creative and one of a kind. And if you never give up, I just know you’re gonna make it.

8/10

The Simpsons 31.12

Pirates of the Caribbean theme won me over.

What’s an algorythm?
Like when you buy a new garbage can online, amd for the rest f your life you see adds for garbage cans.

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started in 2010 as weekly reviews of movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, mostly thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

About the Author

All I do is watch movies, the good, the bad and the ugly. Sometimes I make my own.

Check out my latest film (120K+ views on Youtube):

www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP3Iz23hD7M

I’ve seen over 6000 films and 220 TV shows. I have a degree in Film Production, and wrote my dissertation on Italian neorealism. I mostly gravitate towards social issues films, anything Ken Loach, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica or Jafar Panahi, etc.

I rate films within genre. I watch a lot of films on Mubi, Filmbox Arthouse. My favourite directors are Yasujiro Ozu, Ken Loach, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Zhang Yimou, Roberto Rossellini, Ingmar Bergman, Brian De Palma, Vittorio De Sica and Andrzej Wajda. My favourite actresses have always been Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. I’m nostalgic and reminisce a lot. I’m at the cinema 10 times a month. And I’m a Polish-British millennial.

I will watch anything:

psychological | arthouse | foreign | independent | drama | horror | lgbt | strong female characters | female centred films | dysfunctional families | sexual assault | troubled childhood | mental health issues

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

favourite film and tv quotes

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘I used to think about
your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I  knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’ (Disobedience)

‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’ (The Aviator)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’
‘No, actually you do. Your mother quit your father. Your father quit you. You quit your boyfriend and if I read your hospital chart correctly you quit your life momentarily on a couple of occasions. You quit. It’s what you know how to do.’ (Greys)

‘Where the hell was I that year?’
‘Your were watching television’. (Everybody Loves Raymond)

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’
(Short Term 12)

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’ (Disobedience)

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a moment when our lives change forever. The moment we admit our weaknesses, the moment we rise to a challenge, the moment we accept a sacrifice, or let a loved one go. And sometimes the change in our lives is an answer to our prayers.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘Don’t wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don’t. In face of what we can lose in a day, in an instant, wonder what the hell it is that make us hold it together.’  (Greys)

‘Bree sobbed quietly in the restroom for five miutes, but her husband never knew, because when Bree finally emerged, she was perfect.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘I am not food, you cannot just eat and eat.’ (The Favourite)

‘I don’t love him.’
‘Of course you do.’
‘No!’
‘Don’t take me for a fool Olive,  I’m many things but I’m not a fool.’
‘I know that, you’re brilliant.’
‘Don’t you see, it’s over. Whatever this is, was, it’s over.’
‘I love You.’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing, is reason enough to celebrate.’ (Greys)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘What happened last year when you fell in the water?’
‘I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?’
‘You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ammunition.’
‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’
‘When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.’
‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

‘Dr, I have been this way since…since I can remember. There is no cure.’ (American Horror Story)

‘He was so crazy about me, I couldn’t breathe. So we tried drinking our way back into love, but it never made sense in the morning. So I ran. And every time I came back, he was here. And he was still crazy about me.’ (My Blueberry Nights)

‘Bree van de Kamp had always wanted to live her life with elegance and grace. That is also how she wanted to die. Her plan was to pour herself a glass of her favorite chardonnay, put on her most stylish nightgown and leave behind a note on embossed stationery.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘All we have is this moment. The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid being alive today. So be… here…. now.’ (Six Feet Under)

‘On the train coming here, we were in the same cart, I saw you, you were reading and you feel asleep. I didn’t dare to look at you, you were so beautiful, it was scary. Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a time when we must expose our weaknesses. When our secrets can no longer remain private, when our solitude can no longer be denied, when our pain can no longer be ignored, but sometimes we feel so alone that a weakness we thought we’d overcome suddenly becomes too strong to fight.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’
‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
‘Okay, but what about you?’
‘That is me. And you? Are you happy?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Have you been with other women?’
‘No. Not really. And you?’
‘No.’
‘But, Esti… Do you still
only fancy women?’ (Disobedience)

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’ (Thelma & Louise)

‘She let me live at Nora’s house. She let me believe that I was a part of their family. I fell in love with that family. What am I supposed to do, just sit there, pretend I’m related to them? I was happy. For the first time in my life I was happy.’ (Brothers and Sisters)

‘You will be left all alone with your bitterness and your rage and your knowledge that you loved her and she loved you and you threw it away for them.’
‘Do you love her?’
‘Yes.’
‘And Have you always?’
‘Yes.’
‘So then ask her.’
‘Olive, will you forgive me?’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘No razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’
(Short Term 12)

‘You can’t take a picture of this. It’s already gone.’ (Six Feet Under)
