The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It

The second one was a love story and this is a continuation of their beautiful relationship. I also loved that straight-from-The-Exorcist shot of the priest standing in front of the house. This series will always be superior because it’s based on real people. I used to google the Warrens’ cases as a young teen and I’m so glad their cases inspired this series. Please tell me there are another 3 films I can look forward to?

8/10

Friends The Reunion

Friends was a huge part of my childhood and early teen years. I still have a giant poster hanging on the wall of my childhood bedroom I doubt I’ll ever take down. I’ve rewatched the show 10 times, and stopped myself when I wanted to start it for the 11th time back in 2010. For years the box set was my most prized possession. I know some fans wanted this to be a proper 17-years-later continuation, but I’m glad it wasn’t. I want the characters to stay happy and in their mid 30s, when life is still relatively simple.

10/10

Those Who Wish Me Dead

This felt like the last 10 years never happened and Angelina never ‘retired’ from acting. I wish she chose a better film to make her comeback with (I’m ignoring Come Away, because she had a small role there and I didn’t like the film anyway), but it still made me happy. I definitely would have liked Those Who less if it stared some random actress whose career I didn’t follow closely since late 90s. Also for smoke jumpers, they didn’t do much jumping, did they?

6.5/10

Wake in Fright

This was brutal. Can we not hunt kangaroos please? I know I say this every time I watch an Aussie film, but this made me miss Australia. Thanks Mubi, you truly never disappoint!

‘It’s the best place in Australia!’

7/10

The Cold Day in the Park

I’ve had an awful couple of days, and yet this is what I chose to watch? It’s expiring from Mubi soon.

‘She was very masculine, our English teacher. But quite…pretty. And many of the girls had crushes on her.’

6/10

Plan 9 from Outer Space

This film had a budget of only 60 000 dollars and the funny thing is, if it wasn’t a sci-fi film, we would have never noticed it. I watched Tim Burton’s biopic on ‘the worst director ever’ Ed Wood starring Johnny Depp a few years ago, but I never actually got to see Wood’s work, until now. I lasted 20 minutes, but then again I don’t have the patience for sci-fi unless it’s Jurassic Park, so I’m not the best person to rate this.

2/10

Krisha

If everything else fails, write a script slightly based on your family and cast them in it. I love that Krisha is shown as an introvert, who feels uncomfortable surrounded by a large group of people. She tells her pushing-30 son or nephew (played by the director) he needs to go to film school while he’s still young, otherwise he will become trapped in something else (the actress who plays Krisha didn’t start acting until she was 35) and that he should do it because he had a great passion for it as a kid. I can relate to all of the above. I also loved the thrilling score heard in the background through most of the film. I watched 4 films on Mubi today, and this one is my favourite.

8/10

Fantastic Planet

Let’s… torture some humans. This was on my watchlist for the longest time and I finally got to see it thanks to Mubi.

7/10

300 Miles to Heaven

I love that this is inspired by a real story. I also loved the scene with the parents telling their kids not to come back, because they knew they would have it better in Denmark than in 1980s Poland.

These past few days I’ve been rewatching Veronica Mars, and catching up on many Charlie Chaplin films. I’m trying to watch full filmographies of 10 directors. I am also captivated by Leah Remini’s Scientology and Aftermath A&E series. The best film I watched at the pictures in the recent weeks is Midsommar, a quick review of it can be found below. Three of my summer shows ended, Orange is the New Black, Big Little Lies and Divorce. The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 ends next week.

midsommar am f annabelle

Midsommar

A group of young adults, including two antropology students goes on trip to Sweden to take part in a summer festival. The film is so brilliant, it’s even better than Ari Aster’s previous horror attempt, the amazingly creepy, Hereditary! The cliff scene was shot so amazingly, you knew exactly what would happen, yet you were glued to the screen with eyes wide open and just like the characters, became witness to the goriest deaths of the film. The audience laughed when the elderly lady pushed the boyfriend’s buttocks to ‘help him’, but the cliff scene is what will stick with you for years.

9/10

American Fable

A young girl living in a fantasy world is faced with a wake up call when she finds a man inprisoned in her family’s silo. The little girl is played by Grey’s and Everything Sucks’s Peyton Kennedy. It’s a beautiful horror/thriller and I loved every minute of it.

8/10

Annabelle Comes Home

Lorraine and Ed’s daughter Judy is left in the house with a babysitter and her nosy friend. The friends decides to go into what is now known as Warren’s ‘Occult Museum’ and touch everything. This awakens Annabelle. Mckeena Grace known from The Gifted and Fuller House plays Jane, while Vera and Patrick return. I really hope Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson never quit The Conjuring world, because these films are simply amazing.

RIP, Lorraine Warren.

‘Welcome To The Home Of The Conjuring Universe’

‘There is a lot of evil in this room. But you know what I actually like about it? All the evil in here reminds me of all the good that’s out there.’

‘What else did you touch?’
‘Everything.’

‘Are you a doctor or something?’
‘Or something.’

‘Did it work?’
‘The evil is contained.’

‘It’s the doll, Ed. It’s a beacon for other spirits.’
7/10

toy st lion.jpg child

Toy Story 4

Woody looks after Bonnie’s new toy, Forky. Within a week of watching Toy Story 4, I’ve decided to rewatch the 1st and 2nd Toy Story. Woody and Buzz’s inability to escape from their neighboor’s cellar makes me question their outdoors escapades in the next 3 films. Also the animation back in the 90s was very limited, whereas here, it really is lifelike. Toy Story 4’s ending made me cry just as much as the previous one. The evil doll Gabby Gabby voiced by Christina Hendricks was the most precious one of all.

‘She’ll be okay. Bonnie will be okay.’

‘Does this mean… Woody’s a lost toy?’
‘He’s not lost. Not anymore. To infinity…’
‘…and beyond.’

7/10

The Lion King

Remake of the original The Lion King. You cannot deny that the live action here is breathtaking, but this is not a good remake. Other than the cute, life-like animals, this version doesn’t bring anything new to the story. If anything, it helped me realise the story was very simplistic all along. I admitt, I dozed off 20 minutes in, but I’m glad I woke up just in time for the stampede scene, which was amazing. If you see this at Odeon, don’t forget to pick up your A3 poster, with the furry trio, Simba, Pumbaa and Timon.

5/10

Child’s  Play

A boy is given an Alexa type AI doll, that turns deadly. I went in expecting to hate it and was nicely surprised by how gory the last act was. Sadly, the doll was ugly and not creepy at all. The doll being possessed by a serial killer is what made the franchise creepy, the 21st century Aritficial Intelligence upgrade isn’t that intriguing.

6/10

The Last Movie Star

An elderly movie star is invited to a film festival. He doesn’t know it’s not a real festival. Burt Reynolds gives his last performance, accompanied by Moder Family’s Ariel Winter. I cried through the entire thing. RIP, Burt.

7/10

Spoor

Hunters start dropping dead, it looks like the animals may be finally getting their revenge. I’ve been vegan for 9 years, and vegeterian for more than I can count, so this film is perfect for me. If you’re against hunting, this Polish film from Agnieszka Holland is for you.

9/10

War Games

A teenager accidentaly accesses military system and thinks he’s embarked on a series of tests for military to train on. Tic Tac Toe really is the dumbest game of all. WarGames was quite entertaining and made me wish I was still a teenager. It’s also 300th new film I’ve seen this year.

7/10

iloveyounowdie love story easy rider

I love you, Now Die. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter

A brilliant HBO documentary about Michelle Carter who encouraged her clinically depressed boyfriend Conrad Roy III to take his own life. I’ve been following this case closely since 2014 and yet I didn’t know anything about Michelle’s obsession with Glee, The Fault in Our Stars and her lesbian tendencies.

8/10

Love Story

Two young adults fall in love, soon one of the falls ill. I’m a little biased, because my dad listened to and hummed the Love Story theme for a big part of my childhood. But as much as my dad and I both liked Ryan O’Neal in Paper Moon, the Love Story theme, is the best thing about this classic romance.

6/10

Easy Rider

Two men ride Peter Fonda motorbikes, get high, hookup with girls and talk to locals they meet during their road trip across America. Then they have long night chats, that are equally boring. I don’t like stoners and hippies, so the ending was oddly understandable.

5/10

escaping wake wood the llst word

Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story

A reporter volunteers to be locked in a mental hospital to write an article. I couldn’t figure out if it’s more American Horror Story Asylum or The Handmaid’s Tale. This film, starring Christina Ricci, Judith Light and Revenge’s Joshua Bowman, wasn’t very good, but I was still surprised to find this story on Lifetime.

5/10

Wake Wood

What would you do to get 3 days with your dead loved one? Would you sacrifice your own life? Parents of a girls killed in a dog attack decide to bring her back for 3 days. The last 5 seconds were definitely the most intriguing and I wish they showed us what he cut out.

5/10

The Last Word

An elderly woman asks an orbituary writer to write and orbituary for her, and send for approval, before her death. I knew I would like it the minute the kid started swearing. And then Shirley McClaine told her not to, and the film slowly began to fall apart. I was highly disappointed with  Amanda Seyfried’s acting in this.

‘Just because that’s the way it’s always been, don’t mean I give a shit.’

‘What the fuck do I need with the decimal?’

‘The Fuck?’

Bad Girls

Madeleine Stowe kicks ass, while the other three wait around and disappoint.

8/10

At Middleton

Beautiful film about emotional adultery, something that most experience at least once in their lifetime.

8/10

Parenthood

The ‘They’re hurting my sister’ scene, the ‘if she’s so brilliant, how come she’s sitting in our neighbor’s car’ line and the sight of little Bryce Dallas Howard in the audience never fail. Also this is a great base for the tv series of the same name that I loved so much.

8/10

face2face iioc the lodg

Face 2 Face

You can guess what the disturbing secret is early on, but the way they revealed it was amazingly more sinister than I thought It would be seeing how cheerful this film was up till that point.

‘You called me back from the party, because you thought I was lonely or something and then suddenly I had one friend and that was enough’

8/10

Ocean’s 8

It’s flawed but still fun. I rewatched it with someone who hated it and it ruined the whole film for me.

6/10

The Lodgers

I would buy this story if the 6 generations before didn’t look exactly like the twins.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1

I remember watching Antichrist at the cinema and absolutely loving it (minus the mutilation part) and everyone from my class thinking I was ‘so fucked up’ for even watching it. It’s despicable that I’ve been deliberately avoiding watching Nymphomaniac for five years. Volume one was amazing and not as explicit as I thought It would be, but I have a feeling I will not be so fond of Volume two. Some of my favorite scenes include Uma Thurman completely losing it and taking her children to see daddy’s mistress and the ‘whoring’ bed. Lars von Tier adds female masturbation to most of his film including child awakenings. Recently I watched Manderlay and there’s this beautiful passage when the narrator says that the main character did not understand masturbation is bad till she grew up and realized how ‘morally wrong it was’.

‘Perhaps the only difference between me and other people was that I’ve always demanded more from the sunset; more spectacular colors when the sun hit the horizon. That’s perhaps my only sin.’

‘The secret ingredient to sex is love.’

‘Would it be alright if I show the children the whoring bed? After all, they also have a stake in this event.’

8/10

Searching

This film was a nice surprise! Debra Messing did such a wonderful job and the film kept me intrigued, the ending may have ruined it a little bit.

‘I didn’t know her. I didn’t know my daughter.’

7.5/10

The Nun

I still cannot believe James Wan cast Vera Farmiga’s little sister Taissa (known for her roles in American Horror Story) in the Conjuring world! I also loved the link between The Nun and the first Conjuring and that they used footage from both Conjuring films. I especially liked the scene where someone gets buried alive.

‘Next time do use the shotgun.’

7.5/10

The Two Jakes

I don’t remember Chinatown being this exhausting. There was no action in the sequel, other than, not one, but two earthquakes. Thank God for Madeleine Stowe.

4/10

The Spy Who Dumped Me

Kate McKinnon was amazing in this!

6/10

The Happytime Murders

They replaced Sandra Bullock with a puppet and made The Heat 2 but with muppets fucking? Wtf

2.5/10

I, Daniel Blake

Realest portrayal of life in the UK I’ve seen in years.

‘I am not a client, a customer, nor a service user. “I am not a shirker, a scrounger, a beggar, nor a thief. “I’m not a National Insurance Number or blip on a screen. “I paid my dues, never a penny short, and proud to do so. “I don’t tug the forelock, but look my neighbour in the eye and help him if I can. “I don’t accept or seek charity. “My name is Daniel Blake. I am a man, not a dog. “As such, I demand my rights. “I demand you treat me with respect. “I, Daniel Blake, am a citizen, “nothing more and nothing less.’

‘We should all be drinking a lot more bloody coffee.’

8/10

Christopher Robin

I live for nostalgic films, so It does not come as a surprise that I cried through the entire ninety minutes. They were handing out character postcards at my cinema and they are just as adorable as this film.

‘I’ve cracked.’
‘Oh, I don’t see any cracks. A few wrinkles, maybe.’

‘People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.’

‘Doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.’

‘I haven’t thought about them in years.’
‘Well, we think about you every day.’

8/10

This heart whelming comedy starring Debbie Reynolds is the 400th new film I watched this year.

What sort of teachers take their high school students on a trip to a cemetery in the middle of nowhere? I cannot believe I just spent 2 hours watching this garbage. Plus Annalise Basso, the little girl from Oculus was only in the first 3 scenes, what a waste.

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The Final Cut. The Conjuring 2. Murder By Numbers. Frality. Joe. Arthur Newman. Racing Stripes

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Mad is definitely the right word to describe this film, and hilarious too. The film also has some of the best posters I’ve seen. Lovely caricatures of all those insane characters. Bit too long, but it had to be to fit in all those stunts. If you have time and are well rested, watch it. I still can’t believe they listened to the cop and decided to turn themselves in. The Simpsons had an episode a couple years back based on this insane film. I suggest you watch it when you finish this.

7/10

The Final Cut

What an outstanding idea. Robin Williams portrays a person responsible for cutting out the happiest memories of a person’s life and making a montage for that said person’s funeral. I have never heard of anything like this and this is the kind of sci-fi I want to see more of. It was innovative and kept me interested till the very end.

7/10

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring series is a gift. Vera is the sensitive actress a good horror series needs, but always fails to hire. The sequel focused on Lorraine and Ed’s relationship and it was breathtaking. It was the best romance story I’ve seen in ages. Best romantic comedy and horror in one. I rewatched the first Conjuring a day after and I realized the second one is much better. Even though it may not be as true, if I remember correctly, the Warrens ruled this case as inconclusive. I don’t see why the Amityville ghost would travel to a random family in the UK. It’s not like it followed Lorraine. That, didn’t make sense, everything else was just excellent. I am desperately waiting for it to come out on DVD, so I can watch it and watch it once more. I pray they make a third one.

9/10

Murder By Numbers

I thought it was quite awful, sure the Pitt/Gosling twisted bond was intriguing, but the rest of it was a mess. And why on earth would a monkey out of all animals jump Sandra Bullock? I think the hype connected with this film comes only from girls fangirling over Gosling.

4/10

Frailty

I adored the father’s understanding of human sacrifice. The film was intriguing when he was killing, also the final reveal may come as a shock to you.

6.5/10

Arthur Newman

Interesting with dropping identities, abandoning son, etc, but a little too sex crazed, and he fell in love with her really fast. For some reason I couldn’t stand Colin and Emily’s relationship in this film. Or maybe I’m just a prude. Honestly, without all the sex it would be an 7. Over the years, I’ve seen around 30 films with Colin Firth, and I may never buy this one on DVD, but I may watch it again in 20 years.

6/10

Joe

It was very good at times, and bad at others. Some scenes were unnecessarily heartbreaking, and my emotions were all over the place with the kid’s father being an abusive lazy drunk.

5/10

Racing Stripes

I remember seeing Ice Princess with young Hayden, and I also remember postponing watching this. Clearly with good reason. I recently watched Moondance Alexander with Kay Panabaker and Lori Loughlin and I thought It was disappointing, week later I watched Stripes and it was very similar, but even weaker. Still, it’s a kids film, so I’m rating it accordingly.

Finally had time to watch the few season finales I’ve been postponing. Not Castle though, I am too scared to finish Castle.

SVU 17.23

Woah, it’s the first time they mentioned Olivia’s middle name and it’s Margaret! My middle name is Margaret and I have always hated it, this is actually comforting. I never liked Dots. I didn’t get used to him and he always felt like a temporary replacement.

In situations like this..
Women get killed.
That man just threatened me. Shut the building down and get the footage.
You’re lieutenant Benson? Thank you for getting my grandkids out.
I left him in there. It’s on me.
I’m O negative, that works.
You can’t judge yourself for being relieved that you survived.
Olivia Margaret Benson.

9.5/10

Bates Motel 4.10

What a painful episode. Norma became one of my favorite leading ladies the minute I watched the pilot. I really hoped we still had a year before Norman kills her. This is sad, I watched the whole episode in a state of utter shock and blurriness. Have you guys seen The Conjuring 2 yet? Vera brings so much innocence and emotion to her character, I really hope she decides to come back for the third one.

She’s got the most beautiful blue eyes.
I do taxidermy.
I’m her husband, where the hell is she!?
I love you. I always will.
She was just beautiful before words.
Half queen, half little girl.
She had innocence in her.
Mother, oh mother!
Come on, mother, let’s take you home.
Mother, mother!

5.5/10

Scandal 5.21

Happy to see both Jake and Cyrus fight for the vice presidency.

My take is, he murdered the love of my life.
The shooting.
You set that up?! People died for no reason.
Student vs master. This election should be me and you.
I am not a white man, I got here on my own. I managed to escape you, like Liv managed to escape you. Unlike you, I earned it. This stage is mine.
The day of your brother’s wedding.
He won’t hurt you, you’re his son.
Cyrus Bean.

10/10

When Calls the Heart 3.10

How cute was that Elizabthe and Jack flashback montage? Rosemary and Lee have always been the cutest couple, they just clicked the first day, they’re both witty and fun. I’m glad they got married, and never had any foulish drama.

It’s Henry.
We can use the fabric I bought for my wedding.
Rosemary, your wedding dinner?
We need to move faster everyone, We’ve got to get away from the river.
You get yourself in one of those right now, or I will pick you up and toss you in there myself, rocking chair and all.
Where was the tea party?
In the pantry, by the river.
Jack, Maggie is missing, the children say she went by the river.
Maggie, where is Jack?
The water took him away.
Anyone who can ride a horse, follow me.
From the first day I met you, I knew that no matter what, we were meant for each other. I know God meant for us to have a life together.
Please stay with me, please.
The whole town is praying for you to get better.
I am the luckiest man in the world.
Not half as lucky as I am.

8/10

Scream 2.03

Was Audrey ready to kill her best friend? Just like that? A very average episode, interesting idea with Emma checking that log book to see in which room her father stays.

Piper murdered Riley months ago. You’ve been getting emails from a dead girl.
They’re memories, not opinions.
Any missing girls to report?
Is this old dude bothering you?
I fractured her jaw.
Someone here called the police?
I did.
Look under your seat.

7/10

Scream 2.04

What a crappy episode! Everyone is drugged and has a kissing orgy. Disgusted and very disappointed. When they didn’t have an orgy they didn’t do anything interesting, we learned that Emma keeps a dream journal and Jake was found in a Carrie kind of way.

2/10

Pretty Little Liars 7.01

Alison married the new A and k illed the old A, what? Aria was supposed to see who the Aussie/Brit was, heard a couple of Aussies talking and never talked to them, because she heard a song and went to hook up with Ezra, wtf? How is this show still on air? I though last season was shitty and this one will certainly beat season 6 in suckiness.

My parents knew you?
Aussie or British.
She’s talking to a British guy or possibly an Aussie.
We’re about to hand over one of our own.
I know you killed Charlotte.

I finished watching American Crime Story last week, and the only exasperating thing was the fact that Marcia was raped on a trip to Israel, not Italy, but I guess Italy seemed like a safer option. Comedy Central has stopped showing Everybody Loves Raymond reruns, even though they never showed seasons 5-9, I wanted to watch the first four since I never saw it as a whole. I still have Castle to catch up with, but obviously I am postponing it as I don’t want it to end. I still have 6 episodes of Bones to watch that I’m saving for when all other shows end this week, 3 episodes of Scandal, and I haven’t even started second season of Grace and Frankie. I also hope Awkward gets renewed, even though second half of season 5 was awful, but who made them base the whole half season in summer? It would have better if they showed them in college, who cares that they’re all in different ones.

SVU 17.22

Weak first half of the finale. The previous two were absolutely perfect. Robert Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond is still a NYPD cop, just now he rapes too. I am aware of a possible death in the finale and I’m afraid to think who could that be.

I’m gonna be a grandpa?
Cry all you want, you’re just a broke, black crack-whore.
So called victims.
Someone just threatened to kill me.

Bates Motel 4.08

I’ll always remember that you helped my mom at a time when she was so confused and vulnerable.
We as in? Is this how it’s going to be from now on?
I couldn’t breathe without you.
I understand the bond between us, the cord.

Bates Motel 4.09

I hated this episode, because I truly believed they’d bring Norma back. Gas poisoning was not how how Norma died in the Psycho franchise, so I thought she’d be okay. I thought the show would end with Norma’s death, so I wasn’t prepared as I was sure we’ll still have one more year. Dylan fought with Norma before her death and now he’ll feel guilty. I’m just hoping he’ll be back for season 6, and him and Emma were not just written off the show. I am afraid to watch the finale, as Norman is stuffing Norma’s body and I would be okay with it, if he wasn’t stuffing a character I’ve loved for the last 4 years.

Yeah, well, are you dead?
Norma, wake up!
Mother?

The Middle 7.22

What a lovely season finale. I cried when Frankie said Axl was finally growing up and when Brick sang and when Frankie told Sue to have a great summer.

Axl being Axl scored the cushiest job of all time.
How about peaked in high school.
I hate drama, I mean, I love drama, but the good kind.
Who knows maybe that’s why he stopped getting taller.
All that height and you accomplish nothing.
You may think you’re cool, but you’re not. At the end of the day, you’re just a guy who missed out on a lot of fun stuff.
I guess it took the 10 year old version of him to brung it out in him.
Yep, my boy was finally growing up.
I need to speak with the principal, so get her or him.
And we’ve only just began.
Have a great summer.
You fought for me.
I would have just quit.
It is in your genes.
Take care of your brother.
Axl met the love of his life, but that’s a story for another day.

The show is getting worse with each episode and I hoped they’d give us a nice goodbye. I downloaded Rayna’s song the minute the episode ended. I was so happy when I saw Juliette sent Glenn to protect Maddie. Pretty shocked about Maddie using Rayna’s last name as her stage name, but I guess it’s understandable.

I just wanna have a breakdown.
To hell with looking for that silver lightning.
Someone’s giving her some really bad advice.
She calls him his good luck charm.
Rayna always wanted to sing.
Maddie James?
And suddenly she’s using my last name?

Castle 5.19

A case about a guy who just kept returning to the living.

We become normal.
No Castle, you will never be normal.
If I were an expert on character, which I am.
Why the hell won’t you die!?
As long as I’m with you, I’ll go anywhere.

Faking It 3.10

I didn’t know Amy and Karma were supposed to end up together! The show’s creator tweeted that they would have dated for half of last season. And let’s be honest Karmy was the only reason I got into the show. And now what? Everyone is with someone they weren’t even supposed to date and the show was cancelled. I really hope it gets picked up by Netflix or some other company. The series finale was completely dreadful, just like this half season was.

With Sabrina I could have…
What I couldn’t give you.
I thought you killed her.
Lying about my sexuality made me see the truth.

The Simpsons 27.22

I am glad at least the finale was funny with couch manual and Marge ending up in jail. Chief Wiggum not understanding Rulf was his son Ralph was a nice touch, especially for the finale.

Starts stupid, ends stupid.
Silvester Alone.
Marge, you’re being arrested?!
Incarcerate Marge Simpson’s mother!
I could have married a woman who didn’t look exactly like me, but that would’ve been crazy.
Your husband never filed Bart’s birth certificate. Bart isn’t legally your son.
All kids are accounted for except Rulf Wiggum. Oh, busy.

Thank you all for saying you like longer reviews, no worries, that’s what I’m here for. A friend asked me this week why was Lost called Lost not Stranded, and I may have my suspicion, but Stranded, longer in name and harder to pronounce does seem like a better fit. Why isn’t Lost on Netflix though? I miss it every day. Speaking of Netflix, lots of Disney and Pixar films expire this week, 76 titles in the UK. Even though some of them were added a couple of days ago like Heavyweights, look into it and choose your titles, I will definitely be watching a few for example the original The Parent Trap.

Greys 12.20

A gun control episode. Two young boys play with a gun one’s mother kept in her house. When it comes to our beloved characters…Why is Callie being so stupid? Why is she changing her life for someone she’s been dating for 6 months? I know the timeframe is a little off, because of Meredith’s leave.p How dare she ask Karev to support her in the custody battle when Arizona is Alex’s menthor and best friend? It looks like Meredith will stand with Callie which really upsets me. Let’s see. Arizona: Richard, April, Alex, Bailey? I think Bailey, cause she did not like Callie’s decision to leave Grey Sloan (I just wrote Seattle Grace, hah miss those days) Callie: Meredith, and I’m guessing… Avery, Owen and the residents? I know that Callie is Sophia’s biological mother, but I really hope Arizona wins.

I just sent something really dirty to Meredith Grey.
You’re a very classy lady.
Oh yeah I got it good.
I wouldn’t, I’m classy, remember?
Family messes you up.
It’s better than lonely and crazy like me.
Or having sex with your phone in resident lounge.
You’re giving up your career to chase tail-girl.
I lived in my car when I was 16.

The Middle 7.20

A great episode, even though Sue wasn’t her joyful self, Sue and Frankie were arguing and Frankie and Mike got drunk. I know how Sue feels, hell, I was a vegan for 4 years and I’ve been a vegetarian for 8 years. I know how it feels to want to save the world. But now I understand that me not eating cheese will not save the world and I must not make my life harder because of my beliefs. I’m happy being a vegetarian, and ex vegan. I still don’t eat eggs, as I find it inhuman. It’s not my battle. You win some, you lose some, but pick a reasonable goal. I realized, after 4 years of being vegan, that what pushed me even further was everyone being impressed with my will power. Sure some people were calling me stupid, but most of them were cheering me on and being interested in how I’m doing. But when I went to college, I realized it doesn’t matter, and no one really cares anyway. When it comes to health, let me tell you, yes, I was feeling so much better than now. I was much thinner too. And honestly If I wasn’t such sucker for cheese, I would still be a vegan. Now back to the show I only started watching last December, but fell in love completely. Frankie never fails to be just like us, in this episode getting a snickers bar at Home Depot, I may have done that at Ikea, so you know. I hope Brick marries Cindy, cause they’re just equally weird and I think their marriage would work. This episode Brick gets overboard when he gets an email from an online store asking for his opinion. He spends the whole afternoon writing a review. It’s just like me and this blog, but I genuinely love it. I love the Hecks, and honestly they are just like my family, but not ever vacuuming is just gross. Who else loved that Christmas Carol reference? This show literally makes me reconsider not wanting to have kids and not wanting to work in a primary school. Not Full House, not Parenthood, not other show ever did this to me, but The Middle. It seems like it’s lovely to have someone depend on you and it’s good to be surrounded by someone who is still hopeful. I know three people who became primary school teachers, and honestly I always thought working with kids would be annoying, and I always laughed at teachers for being stuck at school, while kids move on, but I don’t know anymore. I would be good as a school counselor or school psychologist. Not in high school though, cause in high school everyone hates the counselor. I may reconsider this as plan Z or something.

What? I was just at Home Depot getting a snickers bar.
Marry Cindy, I mean it.
Do you ever vacuum?
Do you?
You just need to kick back, relax and enjoy a movie with too many white people in it.
I want my Sue back, happy Sue, sweet Sue.
I’m your ghost of future Christmas.
I gave this paper 9 stars for quality!?
Stranger danger!
I wiped his butt until he was 6. He couldn’t get it at all.
I was happy when I was driving everybody. Those three idiots in the back. I knew everything was okay, cause I was driving and I had it. I had everybody.
I’m just gonna end up like you anyway.

Bates Motel 4.03

Norma and Ramero finally got married! Of course Norman just got Norma in trouble and gave them a reason to suspect there’s people gone missing.

I’m an easy roommate, I work a lot.
Oh my God, someone married you?
She’s the most wonderful person in the world.
That people have died.
I have a reason to believe my mother is insane and is killing people.

9.5/10

Bates Motel 4.04

Oh great, now Norman is pretending to be a bulimic, a little too much Bates writers? Should they be downgrading eating disorders like this? Norman treating the orderly guy like a moron is probably the highlight of the episode, this and Norma smiling at Ramero. Norma made out with a stripper, who knows why was this a thing?

You obviously have no idea what is going on in this place.
Okay, thank you, well done, but no, bad idea.
I’m gonna tell about my feelings in group.
My mother, did she kill anybody?
Like we finally saw each other one day.

7.5/10

Bates Motel 4.05

Weakest episode of the season, but we’re finally talking about Norma’s relationship with her brother. Everyone go watch the Season 4 Catch Up Special, it’s 18 minutes long, very well detailed and absolutely amazing! It has many great scenes, like Norma’s rape in the pilot, Dylan finding out Norma’s brother is his dad and many more! It’s definitely the best Catch Up special out there.

Your brother, that explains everything.
You said that Caleb was your brother, when Caleb introduced himself as Dylan’s father.
Because you slept with your brother or are you ashamed because he raped you? Or are you ashamed, cause you loved him?

3/10

Bates Motel 4.06

Episode of the season, and one of 5 best Bates episodes and we finally learn the truth about Norma’s relationship with her brother! And on top off all that, it’s confirmed that Norman’s father raped Norma when she wasn’t ‘behaving’ or he was drunk, and during at least one of these occasions, Norman was in the room witnessing the rape. This episode was absolutely painful, but beautiful and Norma’s monologue at the end was outstanding!

Actually, she’s charming.
You can’t share with the people you love that you had sex with your brother.
You’re like genuinely sweet.
Fine, I slept with my brother.
Do you think it was your fault?
How much older was he than you?
Four years.
If that information came out, that you had a son with your brother?
He wasn’t nice to Norma, or me or you.
I don’t want him to remember those things.
You never know what you’re capable of until you test it.
Break the woman in half? I am not broken. I am still standing. So go ahead, do your best.
When I was a teenager – it was a long time ago – um… I slept with my brother. I’m sorry. God, I’m sorry to have to tell you this. Oh, it’s horrible. I’m sorry. He’s Dylan’s father. Norma, you were young. It was a mistake. Mistake? It was not a mistake. It was a way of life. It happened for years. I loved him. Our home life was a torture, and we were all we had. I finally tried to stop it, and he got really upset and he raped me. You know how horrible it is to be raped by someone you love? And I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. But I don’t hate him enough to hurt him. And it’s a mess because I don’t know if part of why I hate Caleb so much is because I hate myself. So now you know who you’re married to. And I should have told you before, but I’ve never loved anyone enough to feel obligated to be honest with them. And… it sucks. It sucks because I can’t hide. And I want to, but I can’t. And Chick found out. He met Caleb when he was up at the farm working with Dylan. He just figured it out. And he has issues with my brother, and he was trying to find him, and he hold me that if I didn’t help him that he would tell you all of this, that he would spread it around town, and that he would humiliate you. So – I don’t know. Just go pack your bag.
Where are we going?

Maddie is clearly out of control. When they singed the Stella sisters, I thought yes finally they’ll get extra singing time. Now Maddie is all deva like and Daphne is never singing anymore. I completely forgot Rayna and Juliette were both under 16 when they left home to pursue they careers. Do they remember they may get cancelled next month? We’re all happy we’ll get more Juliette songs as well, as she’s joined Luke’s tour with Lyla and Avery! Not the best episode.

And if you’d seen the song she was playing.
But without the voice, they’re just songs.
Somebody’s moving forward with their career.
Singing half dressed. Some guy grabbed her leg.
I could write a book.
I know what it is like to be a 16 year old girl and have a fight with her father and leave the house forever.
I don’t think there was anything to contain us at 16.
Miss Juliette Barnes!

Welcome to ReviewThisFilm

This website started as weekly reviews on movies and tv episodes, and a diary of the 700 new films I watched every year. Today it’s a place for me to write a few words on films and tv shows that leave some sort of impact on me. I no longer write in depth reviews, partially thanks to bad habits gained by spending many hours a day on Letterboxd, and partially because of my demanding day job.

If you have a film you would like me to watch and review,  please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

About me

I am the dark and twisty Meredith Grey, the mad Dexter Morgan, hoping to grow up to be a little more like the wise, but fun Nora Walker. I am an aspiring filmmaker. My favorite actresses are Jodie Foster, Sally Field and Julianne Moore. Favorite genre – psychological drama. I watch anything with a sexual or mental abuse plot. I used to be a horror freak. I am obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, SVU and many more. My other interests include making oil and pencil portraits and wildlife conservation. I cannot say no to beautiful landscapes, travel, Aussie accent, TV/film quotes and avocados. I have recently moved back from Australia to the UK. I’ve been running this blog for the last 9 years. Here I comment on films and episodes I watch. Enjoy! – Joanne

favourite film and tv quotes

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.’ (Muriel’s Wedding)

‘I used to think about
your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I  knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’ (Disobedience)

‘Nothing’s clean, Howard. But we do our best, right?’ (The Aviator)

‘No, I’m not quitting. I don’t quit things.’
‘No, actually you do. Your mother quit your father. Your father quit you. You quit your boyfriend and if I read your hospital chart correctly you quit your life momentarily on a couple of occasions. You quit. It’s what you know how to do.’ (Greys)

‘Where the hell was I that year?’
‘Your were watching television’. (Everybody Loves Raymond)

‘It’s impossible to worry about anything else when there’s blood coming out of you.’
(Short Term 12)

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’ (Disobedience)

‘Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a moment when our lives change forever. The moment we admit our weaknesses, the moment we rise to a challenge, the moment we accept a sacrifice, or let a loved one go. And sometimes the change in our lives is an answer to our prayers.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Yesterday I went to the movies all day by myself. One after the other. I’ve never done that before. I had a really happy day.’ (Doing Time for Patsy Cline)

‘I just need something to happen. I need a sign that things are going to change. I need a reason to go on. I need some hope. And in the absence of hope, I need to stay in bed a feel like I might die today.’ (Greys)

‘She saved me my whole life. Without her, I’m nothing.’ (The Favourite)

‘Don’t wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don’t. In face of what we can lose in a day, in an instant, wonder what the hell it is that make us hold it together.’  (Greys)

‘Bree sobbed quietly in the restroom for five miutes, but her husband never knew, because when Bree finally emerged, she was perfect.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘I am not food, you cannot just eat and eat.’ (The Favourite)

‘I don’t love him.’
‘Of course you do.’
‘No!’
‘Don’t take me for a fool Olive,  I’m many things but I’m not a fool.’
‘I know that, you’re brilliant.’
‘Don’t you see, it’s over. Whatever this is, was, it’s over.’
‘I love You.’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing, is reason enough to celebrate.’ (Greys)

‘Many years ago, a neighbour and a good friend of ours took her life, and that left us all heartbroken and perplexed. But somehow, when I was alone in that hotel room, I forget about all the pain that she caused. In those awful moments, I thought maybe she had the answer.‘ (Desperate Housewives)

‘What happened last year when you fell in the water?’
‘I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?’
‘You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ammunition.’
‘I was trying to save a patient!’
‘Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You’re careless with your life. You’re not slitting your wrists but you’re careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don’t want out one of these days you’re going to die because of it.’  (Greys)

‘This is the street where I used to live and these were the people with whom I shared my life. I met them the day they moved in. And I saw what they brought with them. Beautiful dreams for the future. And quiet hopes for a better life. Not just for themselves, but for their children, too. If I could, would I tell them what lies ahead? Would I warn them of the sorrow and betrayal that lie in store? No. From where I stand now, I see enough of the road to understand how it must be traveled. The trick is to keep moving forward, to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down and keep us from enjoying a journey that will be over too soon. Yes, there will be unexpected bends in the road, shocking surprises we didn’t see coming, but that’s really the point. Don’t you think?’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?’
‘When are you going to stop suggesting that I’m suicidal?’
‘When you start acting like someone that wants to be alive.’
‘Give me my chart.’
‘Why?’
‘Because I’m not suicidal, and if it says that I am, then it’s wrong.’ (Greys)

‘There is nothing wrong with me.’
‘Then show me your arm.’ (Degrassi)

‘Look, my whole life, I have been the freak. The girl who nobody picked for dodgeball. The girl who didn’t have a mom. The girl who dressed funny because it was her dad buying her clothes. And then, tonight I looked at these people, and I thought maybe there’s a future where I don’t have to be a freak. Maybe I can be who I am and that’s okay.’ (Everything Sucks)

‘Dr, I have been this way since…since I can remember. There is no cure.’ (American Horror Story)

‘He was so crazy about me, I couldn’t breathe. So we tried drinking our way back into love, but it never made sense in the morning. So I ran. And every time I came back, he was here. And he was still crazy about me.’ (My Blueberry Nights)

‘Bree van de Kamp had always wanted to live her life with elegance and grace. That is also how she wanted to die. Her plan was to pour herself a glass of her favorite chardonnay, put on her most stylish nightgown and leave behind a note on embossed stationery.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘All we have is this moment. The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid being alive today. So be… here…. now.’ (Six Feet Under)

‘On the train coming here, we were in the same cart, I saw you, you were reading and you feel asleep. I didn’t dare to look at you, you were so beautiful, it was scary. Afterwards,  I couldn’t stop thinking about you. It made me smile. Then I thought of all the men who would get to hold you, who’d make you laugh. How lucky they were.’ (Enemy at the Gates)

‘It was a good day. Maybe even a great day. Even when it was hard, I was the me in my head. There was a moment when I thought I cant do this, I cant do this alone. I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it, and I did, I blocked out the fear, and I did it.’ (Greys)

‘There comes a time when we must expose our weaknesses. When our secrets can no longer remain private, when our solitude can no longer be denied, when our pain can no longer be ignored, but sometimes we feel so alone that a weakness we thought we’d overcome suddenly becomes too strong to fight.’ (Desperate Housewives)

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’
‘Oh, Esti…’
‘It hasn’t been a complete disaster.’
‘And that’s enough?! Do you have to have sex every Friday?’
‘It’s expected.’
‘It’s medieval. What happened to you?’
‘Nothing. You happened to me. And then I started teaching and that became important. I give them ambition.’
‘To do what? Push out seven babies and be a good wife?’
‘Don’t. Don’t. I help them to value themselves.’
‘Okay, but what about you?’
‘That is me. And you? Are you happy?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Have you been with other women?’
‘No. Not really. And you?’
‘No.’
‘But, Esti… Do you still
only fancy women?’ (Disobedience)

‘OK, then, listen. Let’s not get caught.’
‘What are you talkin’ about?’
‘Let’s keep goin’!’
‘What d’you mean?’
‘Go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Yeah.’ (Thelma & Louise)

‘She let me live at Nora’s house. She let me believe that I was a part of their family. I fell in love with that family. What am I supposed to do, just sit there, pretend I’m related to them? I was happy. For the first time in my life I was happy.’ (Brothers and Sisters)

‘You will be left all alone with your bitterness and your rage and your knowledge that you loved her and she loved you and you threw it away for them.’
‘Do you love her?’
‘Yes.’
‘And Have you always?’
‘Yes.’
‘So then ask her.’
‘Olive, will you forgive me?’ (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women)

‘No razors, no scissors, no fucking freedom.’
(Short Term 12)

‘You can’t take a picture of this. It’s already gone.’ (Six Feet Under)
