The Woman in the Window

I’ve waited two years for this, and this is what I got? I know everyone is calling this a Rear Window knock-off, so I won’t. This movie should have had more scenes with Julianne Moore.

Under the Silver Lake

Some kids egged my car back in January, then they took the cracked eggshell and pressed it into the side of my car. To this day my dad is convinced it was a bird carrying an egg that dropped it on my car and that I scratched my car with a petrol noozle and there is no convicing him otherwise. Anyway, this is relevant, because the character’s car also gets egged by some kids. When the characters talk about hidden messages in song lyrics, my mind automatically went to Charles Manson thinking the same about The Beatles’ lyrics. There is a lot I didn’t like about the script, which should have been cut. Most of the cinematography is beautiful though, and that’s what saves the film. I got an A1 poster of this movie at my local cinema 3 yrs ago, but it took me this long to check out this film. I watched this on Mubi in two sittings and let me just say, I was glad when it finally ended.

The Legend of Bagger Vance

This was directed by Robert Redford? I knew there was a reason why I DVR’d this. Jack Lemmon only narrates this, he’s not actually in the movie, something I wish I knew before going in. Unfortunately, this was extremely boring. If you enjoy watching golf on TV, give it a go, otherwise, stay away.

The Haunting of Hill House

I wish we did not spend that much time with the adult characters, half of them were plain boring. I got sick of them in episode four and started fast forwarding through some of their scenes. I hated that this was 80% drama and 20% horror, instead of the other way around.

I laughed when Edward Herrmann said ‘I never saw her before in my life’ and proceeded to leave. RIP, Edward Herrmann.

Black Mirror: Arkangel

Obviously I’m starting my Black Mirror journey with the episode directed by Jodie Foster. I’ve only seen Nosedive before, and It left a good impression on me. Brenna Harding from Puberty Blues stars. Also, why would you ever chip your child.

Little Giants

I couldn’t stop laughing at Al Bundy being sporty and chewing gum agressively. That’s it, that’s my review.

Isn‘t It Romantic

The first twenty minutes of her mocking romantic comedies is watchable, and the fact that the viewer knows Wilson and Devine’s chemistry from Pitch Perfect helps a lot. Everything that happened after she hit that pole is a mess. Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles’ is constantly heard in the film, tranferring me back to early 2000s.

I’m tagging this as LGBT because to me this short is about a father learning to accept his child’s queerness.

Gentleman Jack

I’ve been putting this series off since it came out, saving it for a special occasion, but I couldn’t possibly put it off any longer. The parts of Anne breaking the fourth wall to mischeviously smile at the camera are my favourite.

‘You do know what people say about her, don’t you? That she can’t be trusted in the company of other women.’

‘Not me, I was there to study anatomy’.

The Fountain

I read a review once saying this film is Aronofsky’s love letter to Rachel Weisz and I can certainly see that. After several attempts over the years, and with complete lack of patience for sci-fi or fantasy, I finally decided to give it another go, since it’s on Mubi now and all. The Fountain is metaphysical, artistic, slightly pretentious and visually beautiful.

Muriel’s Wedding

My obsession with Australia and my love for ABBA started with this film. And Rachel Griffiths and Toni Collette of course. Whenever my parents listened to ABBA when I was a kid, I would roll my eyes and say they were lame. And then I watched Muriel’s Wedding at 12. Since then I cannot listen to ABBA and not tear up thinking about this film. Favourite quirky film right here.

‘When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen’.

‘You listen to 70s music. This is the 90s!’

‘I’m not alone. I’m with Muriel.’

Mulan

This was added to HBO Go today and I finally got the chance to watch it. Despite all the controversy, I enjoyed it a lot. Gong Li stars in a supporting role as the Witch. I also really like the fact that Disney cast a 32 year old Liu Yifei to play teenaged Mulan.

Isle of Dogs

It took me 7 sittings to finish it. I am glad I refused to see this at the cinema, because I would have slept through this fairytale and wouldn’t have understood anything. This surely could have been told just as effectively without sending dogs off to an island and teaching them how to talk. The Fantastic Mr. Fox is much better.

The Lie

‘This is a paid advertisement for birth control’. Convince me otherwise.

I miss The Killing, it was one of my favourite shows. I would have seen this sooner had I known it was co-written and directed by Veena Sud who created the US version of The Killing, and yes it also stars Mireille Enos. I liked the scene on the bridge at the beginning when the father finds her and tries to figure out what has just happened.

‘How long has she been cutting herself?’
‘She started a few months after you left. I had her talk to somebody, but she didn’t stop, so I don’t know what to do.’
‘She was such a happy little girl.’
‘Yeah, she was.’

Love Antosha

According to Letterboxd, I’ve seen 15 films starring Anton Yelchin, but as it turns out I didn’t know much about him. I didn’t know anything about his parents or that he had cystic fibrosis. Anton was extremely talented and passionate about his craft and it’s a real shame we lost him so soon.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Why are they wearing the stupid red beanies? Bill Murray looks like Papa Smurf for crying out loud! This might just be my least favourite Wes Anderson. At least they played/sung David Bowie’s Life on Mars a couple of times. Also Willem Dafoe steals the show.

The Fruit Fix

I don’t have time to watch anything for another 2 weeks, but a friend sent me a link to this short on social anxiety, and I decided to watch it between meetings. Over a decade ago, I developed a really bad social anxiety after a traumatic event, and I’m glad it’s gotten better with age. I still feel anxious and uncomfortable with people who don’t know me and often rethink every single word, but It’s manageable now.

Ammonite

You know I’m a huge advocate for good wlw films, sadly this isn’t one of them. Both Winslet and Ronan aren’t very convincing. There’s only two or three short scenes where Kate’s character can be seen going through internal turmoil connected with hiding her sexuality, which is why I’m giving this 5/10 stars. Do yourself a favour and rewatch Disobedience instead.

Kate Walsh finally getting her second break in a film with a worldwide cinema release and starring opposite Liam Neeson makes me so happy.

Pixie

Olivia Cooke has been in some awesome movies since her time on Bates Motel and this is probably the weakest one, but it’s still quite enjoyable.

A Year of The Quiet Sun

It’s sad to think that younger generations of cinema goers have forgotten about Krzysztof Zanussi. When you hear about Polish directors, only three surnames are usually mentioned, Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieslowski and Roman Polanski. I remember watching special features on my The Double Life of Veronique DVD and there Kieslowski acknowledges how much he’d learned from Zanussi. A Year of the Quiet Sun is leaving Netflix tomorrow, along with The Spiral. Go see them.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

And she’s off. The US has officially acquired Jessie Buckley. We won’t be seeing her in many British productions now. She’s officially a star. Every time she repeats she’s thinking of ending things I’m taken back to my teen years. It’s a great psychological drama with beautiful, relatable monologues. Take a look at a few of them.

‘I’m thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. IIt sticks, it lingers, it dominates. There’s not much I can do about it, trust me. It doesn’t go away. It’s there whether I like it or not. It’s there when I eat, when I go to bed. It’s there when I sleep. It’s there when I wake up. It’s always there. Always. I haven’t been thinking about it for long. The idea’s new. But it feels old at the same time. When did it start? What if this thought wasn’t conceived by me, but planted in my mind, pre-developed? Is an spoken idea unoriginal? Maybe I’ve actually known all along. Maybe this is how it was always going to end. Jake once said, “Sometimes the thought is closer to the truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.’

I was there with my girlfriend… We were celebrating our anniversary, stopped in for a drink, and then this guy kept looking at me. It’s a nuisance. The occupational hazard of… of being a female. You can’t even go for a drink. Always being looked at. He was a creeper! You know? And I remember thinking, I wish my boyfriend was here. Which is… That’s sort of sad, that being a woman, the only way a guy leaves you alone is if you’re with another guy. Like, if… like… like you’ve been claimed. Like you’re property, even then. Anyway, I can’t… I can’t remember what he looks like. Why would I? Nothing happened. Maybe it was just… I think it was just… Just one of thousands of such non-interactions in my life. It’s like asking me to describe a mosquito that bit me on an evening 40 years ago. Well, you haven’t seen anyone fitting that description, have you?’

‘Everything wants to live, Jake. Viruses are just one more example of everything. Even fake, crappy movie ideas want to live. Like, they grow in your brain, replacing real ideas. That’s what makes them dangerous.’

Enola Holmes

A few scenes were shot at Hatfield House (where The Favourite was filmed among many others), which is even prettier in person. I watched this as part of a uni social thing. We were supposed to watch The Greatest Showman, which I’ve seen, so I guess it worked out for the best? The film could have used more Helena Bonham Carter though. I still cannot believe how much Millie Bobby Brown looks like a teenage Natalie Portman. It surely helped her career.

The Ground Beneath My Feet

I loved the fact that these two successful women had to hide their relationship. If this was an American film they wouldn’t be hiding, but let’s not forget not everyone is or can be out.

Valley of Love

There are eight Isabelle Huppert films on Mubi right now and I’m ashamed to say I haven’t seen any of them, so I’m fixing that now. I’ve already missed two, just because I assumed everything they show on Mubi goes into the Mubi Library. I was proven wrong.

Gay USA

I really needed this today. At the beginning of the film one 70 yr old lady said that when she was young there were no gays and she doesn’t understand where did they all come from. A used to say the exact same hurtful thing regularly, which is why I’m still in the closet. There is another film by the same director that I also watched on Mubi called Buddies. It’s the first film about AIDS and it’s equally wonderful.

‘I can’t go on being miserable all my life, so I left my husband. I loved my husband, but I wasn’t in love with him.’

‘Ok, I’m gay, so what?’

First time using the new WordPress editor. It took me good few minutes to figure out where everything is. Inserting picture is now a little more complicated I think, I don’t really know how to adjust size of images, but I’ll figure out soon. I really like how you can highlight what text you want to move and just click the arrows, without having to drag it or click Copy and Paste. Last week I finally caved in and got myself Amazon Prime. Between Mubi, Filmbox Arthouse, HBO GO, Netflix and Amazon, I will never run out of films to watch.

So Long, My Son

Amazing take on China’s one child policy. I think this would have benefited from chronological scene order, but it was a treat anyway. I have renewed Mubi for another year and this is the first film I watched with my new subscription. I just learned yesterday that this film is coming to HBO Go and I cannot wait to show it to my dad next week.

Funny Girl

I understand Fanny’s attachment and forgiveness. I really wish they showed us what happened after, because speaking from experience, not much comes close to stressing about the loved one doing the same thing again in the future. It’s a thought that never really leaves your head. On a happy note though, I really liked most of Barbra’s costumes in this film.

You think beautiful girls are going to stay in style forever? I should say not! Any minute now they’re going to be out! Finished! Then it’ll be my turn!

The War Against Women

It angers me that men will always have that one thing that they can take away from women. Think of all the home invasion films, criminals encounter a male and think ‘Let’s beat him up’, they encounter a female ‘Let’s rape her’. They never think of doing these nasty things to other men, yet they’ll always have that power over women and sadly too many use it as a weapon. This is a great short. It’s on Netflix, go watch it.

Hearts in Atlantis

What a nice surprise. This is based on two Stephen King novellas? Which ones? First love and being young. What a magical time. I am very nostalgic and I miss my care free childhood every day, so this film is ideal for me. I’ve decided a long time ago, that I will never sell my family home, because I have so many wonderful memories associated with it. I am an only child and spent a lot of my time in that house by myself, so it will always be my safe space. I try to visit as much as I can. I didn’t like the mind reading mumbo jumbo, but everything else was amazing. They don’t make family films like this anymore.

‘You know, when you’re young, you have moments of such happiness, you think you’re living in some-place magical, like Atlantis must have been. Then we grow up, and our hearts break in two.’

‘I wouldn’t have missed a single minute of it, Bobby. Not for the whole world.’

‘Why do we always expect home to stay the same? Nothing else does.’

‘It’s funny how when you’re a kid, a day can last forever. Now, all these years seem just like a blink.’

House

I probably would have never come across it if it wasn’t for Mubi. This film must be what a long acid trip must be like. I liked it a lot, but I’m not into lights constantly flashing, hence the lower rating.

Blue Crush

Switched at Birth was a brilliant teen show from Lizzy Weiss about the deaf community, but this is just another teen surf film, like the one with Camilla Bello from around the same time.

My dad asked ‘Is that the Blackhood’s daughter?’ when he walked past the living room and saw me watching this. I don’t get the hype, but I’m all for unhappy endings.

Swimming For Gold

I mainly watched this because I used to live in Brisbane and I miss it every day. Guess how much Brisbane they showed us in this… It was just an Aussie version of Bunk’d, Peyton List even had an annoying friend just like on that post-Jessie show. Don’t ask me how I know this, I used to babysit a lot and most of my friends have kids now. Everyone seems to be into another show Peyton is in, Cobra Kai, which is now on Netflix.

Elisa and Marcela

I really liked the first act, but most of came after angered me. I’m also glad I’m not the only one who googled how exactly she got pregnant from just that one time.

The Half of It

Undoubtedly Netflix’s best original teen movie. I just love how innocent it is and that the writers didn’t force her to come out to her dad. If she did come out and he would accept her, I would have been disappointed and my rating would have been lower. I like that despite everything that happened in the film, she is still very much in the closet.

InstaPsycho

It amazes me how Laura Slade Wiggins, best known from Shameless, still plays a teenager at 32. Also, these Lifetime films crack me up. Show me a bigger guilty pleasure, I’ll wait.

And to think I almost didn’t give this awesome short a chance, because it’s advertised as a film about fishing, which is exactly why my dad wouldn’t watch it with me. Fishing’s boring and I’m against it as a vegan, but this film isn’t.

To The Stars

A bullied teenager befriends a new girl in town. The new girl is a mystery to everyone and likes to lie to everyone about herself and her family. She’s hiding a personal secret that is soon going to come out and change everything. My kind of screenplay. This is probably my favorite LGBT film of 2019. Time to update my Favourite films of the 2010s list.

Jack The Bear

Exactly what I needed today. The relationship between the two brothers is what’s running the film here. What happened to Miko Hughes’s career after the nineties? He was awesome in every single one of those kid roles he played including in Pet Sematary, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Mercury Rising, Full House and so many more. Jack the Bear must have been shelved for years, because the ages of child actors were at least 3 years off from how old their characters were, Reese Witherspoon would have been 16 in 1992, but looked 13 in the film, and Miko was 3.5 in the film, but would have been 6 in ’92.

A writer goes to meet her friend who was injured in the war many years ago, and whom she had a crush on as a little girl. I wish I realised she’s the writer of The Children’s Hour before she mentioned it an hour and a half into the film.

‘There are women who reach a perfect time of life when the face will never again be as good, the body never as graceful, powerful. It had happened that year to Julia.’

‘Act gay. Can you act gay?’

‘After all, the whole world knows about you and Julia.’
‘What does the whole world know, Sammy? What does the world know?’
‘Don’t be that way. I’m a sophisticated man. If anybody understands the sex urge of the adolescent girl, it’s me.’

A film noir classic. This film was originally supposed to end with a suicide, but the studio said that would be too horrific, so we got this highly disappointing ending instead.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend

It took me almost 3 hours to go through all possible scenarios and some of them were clearly better than others, for example how on Earth is my favourite character accidentally ending Times Up funny? There’s also a diss at Lori Loughlin and the USC scandal. I won’t miss this show that much, I’d rather re-watch 30 Rock.

Deadly Shores

Carly Schroeder’s last film before she retired from acting and joined the army. I loved Mean Creek as a kid, and I think her acting was better when she was younger. It’s been a month and I couldn’t possibly tell you how this movie ended, I know a young wife followed her writer husband to a property by the seaside, where his deceased wife lived, there she finds out he’s in love with someone else and is planning to get rid of her.

TV Reviews: Dead to Me Season 2

Another wonderful season full of twists. I know a lot of people ship Jen and Judy, and I do too, I wasn’t at first because this show was a perfect example of queerbating, but thanks to tumblr (my handle is movieskeepmealive), I now am. Even my dad ships them to be honest, in episode 4 when they get rid of the body and spend the night in that hotel, he said they should just get together already. In season two we learn that one of the girls is bisexual and is seeing a girl for three episodes. In the last episode when Jen forgives Judy and they hug, my dad threw ‘And they’re not a couple?’, which made me feel extremely proud. I definitely haven’t rated another show this high this season, it was perfect. I watched all episodes the minute they were released and then rewatched them again a couple days later with my family. Here are my notes and quotes I’ve written down during my marathon.

Dead to Me 2.01

We learn that Jen didn’t shoot Steve, she killed him with a wooden bird that belongs to her younger son. Noisy neighbor is still noisy and almost exposes Jen by accident. Jen is also seen cleaning up blood.

Judy is back!
It killed itself.
But you do have somewhere to stay? You do have people?
Totally.
You snuck up on me like a fucking Prius.
I was fucking a grown man last night.
Well, you don’t know how I fuck.

There were already 6 rats underneath the fridge? I can’t lie, when Jen lost it and told her son and his creepy friend to get the fuck out, I thought this is exactly how I would be with my children if they annoyed me if I had children. Jen goes to the store and buys a lot of lye to dissolve rats in. As per her son’s creepy friend’s advice, girls decide to bury the body in a local forrest.

Dead to Me 2.04

Girls learn that Karen’s husband is cheating on her with a man. I loved the scenes in the bar where the girls pretend to be related to the bride to get free drinks, get hit on, just so Jen can throw in the fantastic line about getting one more jig in before throwing themselves off the bridge and another one liner about singing Hallelujah! Judy did get to sing eventually when Jen’s son’s bird died, she ended up singinhg Dream a Little Dream of Me. Jen’s older son Charlie finds Steve’s car and thinks it’s his birthday gift.

We’re middle aged women in a Mercedes.
Was it worth it? You commited a crime.

Judy grabs some food with this girl that’s been hitting on her all season and re-adjusts her bra when the girl isn’t looking, which means she clearly likes her. Jen finds out her son found the car and to dispose of evidence sge decides to set it on fire.

There’s been an energetic shift.

Judy gives Charlie the sex talk. If they ever charge Judy with Steve’s murder, she has the perfect excuse, he threatened to kill her. We learn that Judy is in fact bi and her new girlfriend’s ex that lives with her is the cop who hates Judy.

Judy’s already in love with her new girlfiend. Jen volunteers herself and Judy to throw a vigil for Steve and we learn that they’ve cast Frances Conroy as Steve and Ben’s mom! Charlie attends the vigil and sees pictures of Steve in his car with his baseball cap on, the very same one his girlfriend wore in the pictures they took.

Ben’s parents turn out to be crazy rich and are thinking of selling their mansion. Charlie’s first girlfriend vandalises their garage and then sends incriminating pictures to the police as a revenge on Charlie for dumping her. Judy wants to become a baby cuddler, but is told that the person has to have a clear Police record.

Why did you have Steve Wood’s car?
People are a fucking mess.
Crazier things have happened.
Literally they have not.

Katey Segal aka Peggy Bundy, as in Christina Applegate’s mom from Married With Children plays Judy’s mom! In this episode Jen tells Judy the truth about Steve’s death and she doesn’t take it well. Judy wants to confess to the crime, but Jen ends up confessing herself. She leaves an ‘In Case of Emergency’ binder and writes three letters, to Judy and each of her sons.

Once you go in, they make it almost impossible for you not to come back.
You were a kid, they shouldn’t have made you testify.

Jen turns herself in and leaves the kids to Judy.

I killed Steve Hale.
And be their legal guardian.
We’re going back to the car, before our bodies are never found.

She sees the good in people even when it isn’t there.
I guess I thought I’d get what I deserved.
That will carry it’s way in the court room.
She was murdered. She was trying to protect me from my stepfather.
But you’re gonna go home and we’re never gonna talk about what we didn’t find here.
Sometimes justice works itself out.

I think I liked this season more than the first one. Like I said, this show is fantastic and I really hope it is renewed for a third season!

I’ve finally caught up on HTGAWM and here’s part 1 of my notes. What I like the most about this season is that Annalise finally comes to terms with her sexuality and questions whether she really is bi or maybe she’s gay, but was to afraid of being stigmatised. She also admits she should have stayed with Eve and only pursued her ex husband because she was afraid to be gay.

How To Get Away with Murder 6.05

This season is so much better than the previous two, because Laurel isn’t here. No one cares about her and her father’s mafia. She doesn’t return until episode 14 and I’m thankful for that.

Disobedience

‘Do you still only fancy women?’

Beautiful film. It’s made it’s way to my top 10. The first kiss Ronit and Esti share is the prettiest kiss I’ve ever seen on screen, partially because Ronit’s eyes are open through a big part of it.

It’s sad that Disobedience was shot in London and yet it didn’t get a proper national cinema release. Is this because only <0.5% of British population is Jewish or because of the LGBT aspect of the film?

‘I used to think about your life in New York. I tried to imagine your room. I kept track of the time difference, so I knew when you were awake and when you were asleep.’

‘I wanted it to happen. And when we were girls… Even then, it was the same. It’s always been this way! I have always wanted it.’

‘Why did you get married, Esti? Why didn’t you just leave? So everything was all right when I left?’
‘No. I was ill.’
‘What sort of ill?’
‘In my head.’
‘If I had to sleep with a man, why not with our best friend?’

The Old Man and the Gun

Story of Forrest Tucker, a criminal best known for escaping from prison 18 times. This film starring Robert Redford in what he claims to be his last role, shows Tucker’s addiction to the thrill and focuses on his innability to stop robbing banks. I really hope this isn’t Redford’s last role. Stong redhead game though, I’ve counted three actors with red hair.

Stan and Ollie

Wonderful performances from leading and supporting actors. My parents used to love watching reruns of Stanley and Oliver’s films when they were kids 50 years ago. I am happy there’s a film about S&O’s lives after the peak of their careers and that I spent the last 30 minutes of it sobbing.

I wish this was more about female friendship like the poster suggests and less about all three of them being sexually or romantically linked to this village idiot who was a sex addict and never got called out for cheating. Were any of the conversations the girls had not about men and sex?

A colleague recommended this to me and it’s honestly the best recommendation I’ve gotten in years! Both Tom Hanks and the film are hilarious!

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Even though I didn’t like the main relationship that much, the film has many fun smaller plots. My favourite storyline was with the girl that picked up a little bit of sign language because the lad she was into, but hadn’t even been introduced to, was deaf. I know this was made in 1993, but that joke about Lady Di did not sit well with me.

My favorite kind of fest. The film is quite realistic, and I am the kind of person who would have volunteered for the beheading too. I especially liked it when the decapitation didn’t work, so the killer tried again.

Abducted in Plain Sight

Devestating documentary. The parents failed this kid so badly. They didn’t know pedophiles exisited, they literally let the sex offender sleep in the girl’s bed for years and on top of all, they were both in love with him and ended up having affairs with him! The alien story makes it all even more shocking!
